Apple’s macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate includes a video that appears to demonstrate camera-equipped AirPods working with Visual Intelligence. Aaron posted the footage on August 18, 2026, showing a person holding a book in front of the wearable’s camera.
According to reports from 9to5Mac and MacRumors, the release candidate contains several references to B790, Apple’s internal codename for the device. The designation has previously been linked to AirPods with cameras.
Visual Intelligence could use AirPods as a new input
The demonstration presents the cameras as a way to supply Visual Intelligence with information about the user’s immediate environment. Visual Intelligence is Apple’s feature for interpreting objects and other details from a person’s surroundings.
In the clip, Siri appears able to answer questions about nearby items and save information for later use. The software also advises users to keep hair from covering the earbuds, suggesting unobstructed lenses are important for accurate environmental recognition.
That would give Apple’s visual-assistance software a hands-free source of information beyond a phone’s rear camera. The company has pushed Visual Intelligence as part of its broader AI effort, and placing it in a product worn throughout the day could make the feature more useful for identifying objects, recalling details and asking quick questions while moving around.
The release candidate offers a stronger clue ahead of Apple’s fall event
The footage matters because it sits inside pre-release macOS software rather than appearing only in supply-chain claims or patent filings. A potential September debut would also place the product alongside Apple’s expected iPhone-focused event, where the company typically draws its largest consumer audience of the year.
Apple has not publicly confirmed the AirPods’ existence, specifications, price or release date. It remains unclear how many cameras the hardware would carry, where Apple would place them, what models would receive them, and whether the software shown in Tahoe 26.7 will ship unchanged.
