Apple has just released the new Beta for the upcoming iOS 5.1, while 5.0.1 was a minor patch and bug job 5.1 is going to be the one which will really bring out the new features in iOS 5. You can download the Beta IPSW for your respective iDevice right now and installation will require a specific version of iTunes which is yet to be released, but why not keep the IPSW at the ready for when it does release.

Below are the download links for all your devices followed by the change-log and a link to the iTunes Beta needed to install the IPSW will be added as soon as it hits the internet.

The following issues relate to using the 5.1 SDK to develop code.

 

Accounts

When creating an iCloud account, you can use any Apple ID as long as it is a full email address and not a MobileMe account. If you have a MobileMe account, you can move that account to iCloud. You can find more information at: http://me.com/move

APIs

• The NSNetService class and CFNetService APIs do not include P2P interfaces by default. To browse, register, or resolve services over P2P interfaces, an application needs to use the Bonjour DNSService*() APIs noted below.

• Setting the interfaceIndex parameter to kDNSServiceInterfaceIndexAny in the following API’s will not include P2P interfaces by default. To include P2P interfaces, you must now set thekDNSServiceFlagsIncludeP2P flag when using kDNSServiceInterfaceIndexAny or set the interfaceIndex to kDNSServiceInterfaceIndexP2P. The affected APIs are:

  • DNSServiceBrowse
  • DNSServiceRegister
  • DNSServiceResolve
  • DNSServiceRegisterRecord
  • DNSServiceQueryRecord

GameKit

App Icons and Profile Photos are not loading in apps using Game Center.

iCloud Storage

• Provisioning profiles must be enabled for iCloud in the iOS Provisioning Portal. You can enable a provisioning profile for iCloud by navigating to the App ID section of the iOS Provisioning Portal and configuring your App ID for iCloud. After enabling the App ID for iCloud, regenerate your provisioning profiles to enable them for iCloud.

• The setSortDescriptors: method of NSMetadataQuery is not supported.

• In iOS 5, files that are protected via Data Protection cannot be used with iCloud Storage APIs.

• File names are case-insensitive in Mac OS X but case-sensitive in iOS. This can lead to problems when sharing files between the two using iCloud. You should take steps on iOS to avoid creating files whose names differ only by case.

Movie Player

Starting in iOS 5.0, in order to facilitate finer-grained playback control, a movie player is not automatically prepared to play upon creation. Call the prepareToPlay method to prepare the movie player. For more information, see MPMoviePlayerController Class Reference

Music Player

Using shake-to-shuffle causes Music app to freeze and playback to stop.

Newsstand

FIXED: Deleting an issue that was marked as the currently reading issue could cause a crash.

Security

In iOS 5, the signing of certificates with MD5 signatures is not supported. Please ensure that certificates use signature algorithms based on SHA1 or SHA2.

Xcode/Developer Tools

• A bug in the documentation organizer causes an exception when you type in any field in the content area. To prevent the need to log in to the developer website from Xcode, download documentation sets locally using Xcode’s documentation preference pane and enable the ‘Check for and install updates automatically’ checkbox as a workaround.

• “uninstall-devtools” script mistakenly removes files and packages even if Xcode is still running. Be sure to quit any running copy of Xcode before starting the “uninstall-devtools” script.

• The Network Link Conditioner daemon cannot be launched after installing the Networking Link Conditioner without a reboot. You can manually workaround the issue with a restart or by the following command: sudo launchctl load /system/library/launchdaemons/com.apple.networklinkconditioner.plist.]

• In the iOS 5 development tools, it is possible to extract APIs used by an application and have them checked for use of private APIs. This option is offered when you validate your application for app submission.

Tired of your stationary status bar and want to move items in the status bar to your liking? With this handy Cydia tweak you can now do so. Arrange Status Bar is a handy tweak that lets you manage your status bars items and lets you move them freely within the status bar so that you can set it to your liking .

Arrange Status Bar is a handy tweak available on Cydia and works with iOS 4 and any device supporting iOS 4 and also iOS 5 compatible. sadly you can’t remove any of the status bar items but you can move them freely and once you are content you can make sure that they can’t be moved around again and if you aren’t satisfied with it you can always revert back the changes to default and go back and make everything all better.

 

Step 1.

Open Cydia and in Search and type the following without the quotation marks ( ” ” )

“net.limneos.arrangestatusbar”

and tap on the single result which bears the symbol of a power drill.

Step 2.

On the top right of the screen choose Install followed by Confirm and wait for Cydia to download and install Arrange Status Bar, Once installed it will prompt you to “Restart Springboard” to complete the installation. Tap the result and wait for your device to do a soft reset and be taken back to your lockscreen.

Step 3.

Once on your lock screen you now have to go to settings and search for Arrange Status Bar by scrolling down.

By default you can freely move your Status Bar items now by sliding the items you need to move by moving your finger left and right on the item you wish to move, and once you are satisfied wit your arrangement you can tap  “Lock Current Items” to On to fix their positions and tap on “Reset StatusBar” to revert back to the default of your iDevice and undoing all your previous changes.

The following are instructions on how to update your iPhone 4 or 3GS to 4.3.3 while preserving the baseband. For your convenience i have included ready-made custom IPSWs which don’t update the baseband. Open up the full link for the whole guide.

NOTE – Apple has stopped signing 4.3.3 Today so be sure to follow the guide HERE before continuing with this one.

NOTE – For those facing issues with MMS or Facetime, follow the guide HERE to fix it.

Step One

Download iPhone 3GS/4 custom and official IPSW. Download and extract Redsn0w. For convenience, place all of them in a folder on the desktop, like so:

Step Two

Open up Redsnow. If you are on Windows 7, you will have to run Redsn0w as an administrator and in Windows XP SP3 Compatibility mode. Click browse.

Step Three

A window will appear, point it towards the Official IPSW for your phone which we previously placed in the folder on the desktop.

Step Four

Once the IPSW gets verified, click the Next button. Redsn0w will then prepare the jailbreak files.  You will then be shown a menu with many options. Untick all except for “Just Enter Pwned DFU mode Right Now” and click Next.

Step Five

Connect the iPhone to the PC and then proceed to switch it off. Once the phone is fully turned off click Next. Remember to hold the phone in your hand before you press next  as you will have to press various buttons on the phone to make it  enter DFU mode.

Step Six

After pressing next, instructions to enter DFU mode will appear. To enter DFU mode, hold the power button for 3 seconds, then without letting go of the power button press the home button and power button together for 10 seconds after which let go of the power button and continue to hold the home button until your PC detects the phone. It may take several tries to get into DFU mode.

Once the phone has entered DFU mode, the process will begin. The phone will reboot.

When it’s completed it will show you this message. Now your device is ready to accept custom IPSWs from iTunes.

Step Seven

Launch TinyUmbrella and press the “Start TSS Server” button. Keep TinyUmbrella running.

Fire up iTunes and it will instantly show you the following message.

Press OK.

Step Eight

On the iPhone menu in iTunes, hold shift and press the restore button.

Step Nine

iTunes will now ask you to locate the IPSW file. Point it towards the Custom IPSW that you downloaded and placed in the Jailbreak folder.

iTunes will then restore your iPhone with the custom firmware. This process will take about ten minutes and iTunes will notify you once the process is complete. The phone will then restart.

After the reboot the phone will be Jailbroken and activated on 4.3.3 with cydia on the homescreen. If the phone fails to activate or Cydia isnt working(very unlikely) continue onto the next steps.

Step Nine 

Open up Redsn0w again. Click browse and select the Official IPSW file (Refer to step 2 and 3). Click next. This time around, select only “Install Cydia” and leave all other options unticked.

Step Ten

Click Next and then connect the iPhone and turn it off. After it has fully shut down, Click Next (Refer to step 5 and 6). Follow the on-screen instructions and after you have successfully entered DFU mode, the process will begin.

It will notify you when it’s complete. The rest of the process takes place on your phone (This usually takes around 5 minutes). If all has gone well you’ll see a running pineapple logo on your screen. Your phone will reboot after that is completed and then you’ll have and activated and jailbroken phone with the baseband left untouched. The Cydia icon will be on the springboard.

The end result is that we will have the iPhone on 4.3.3 but the baseband will be whatever you started from(05.13.04) in this case as opposed to the 05.16.02 on the stock firmware. Now you can simply go to Cydia and install Ultrasn0w and your phone will be unlocked. And that’s it.

Some people are complaining that iOS 5 is bringing laggy cover flow in their music library when the iDevice is titled in a landscape position causing the albums to lag when going through them swiftly, this is especially annoying if you like surfing for your favorite albums in the landscape position and hate the lag, there is a simple tweak in Cydia which helps rectify this issue and its very simple to install and requires no configuration afterwards.

Smooth Cover Flow is a great tweak which helps resolve an issue with the lag in navigating through album arts while the iDevice is in portrait mode so you can find your favorite albums in the most awesome way possible but in iOS 5 it caused a small issue which caused the album art to stutter when going through them swiftly.

A handy tweak from Cydia will help rectify this issue and of course can only be used on Jailbroken iDevices and greater than iOS 5 (since the issue is non existent on iOS4)

Step 1.

Go to Cydia and navigate to “Search” and search for the below term without the quotation marks ( ” ” )

“me.devbug.smoothcoverflow”

and click on the single result bearing the icon of a power drill

Step 2.

On the top right of the screen choose “Install” and followed by “Confirm” which will again be on the top right of the next screen and wait for Cydia to download and install the tweak. Once installed it will prompt you to “Restart Springboard” and you are done. Your device will do a soft reset and take you back to your lockscreen and now all you have to do is unlock your screen and go to your Music and tilt your iDevice in landscape to see the smooth cover flow.

Looks like the HP TouchPad Android scene is picking up it’s pace, after CyanogenMod created the initial Android 2.3 Gingerbread port two more Alphas have popped up offering some much need improvements. Check out the guide on how to install CyanogenMod 7.1 Alpha 3 on your HP TouchPad after the break.

The release comes from the popular Android modding site RootWiki, this release is an update to the official CyanogenMod 7.1 ROM for the HP TouchPad. The full changelog is below:

* Bluetooth DPad/arrows do not rotate with screen

Use this guide only if you already have one of the previous Alphas installed, if you don’t install them first. Now lets get started on the guide itself.

Step 1. Download the update file (named update-cm-7.1.0-tenderloin-a3-fullofbugs-signed.zip) from the official thread here. You can either download it on your PC and transfer it to your TouchPad or download it directly on the TouchPad, it doesn’t really matter. Make sure to remember where you placed the file.

Step 2. Now hold the power button and wait till the popup comes up, select reboot and then reboot into recovery.

Step 3. Now your TouchPad should have booted into ClockWork recovery. Navigate to install zip from SDcard, then choose zip from SDcard and then select the file we downloaded earlier.

Step 4. After CyanogenMod 7.1 Alpha 3 is flashed on your TouchPad select reboot system now.

Have you ever been lying down or sitting in a comfortable position and wished you didn’t have to use both hands to turn the page on your iBooks? Or scroll down for you on the page you are on? What if you could control the page up and down settings with the volume buttons and go nearly handsfree with your iDevice? This is especially useful to those of us who like using one hand while using iBooks on our iDevices and want to scroll down a page and are too lazy to move our hand to do so.

This tweak is relatively simple to install and requires a few extra steps, this tweak runs on iOS 4 AND 5 and a jailbroken iDevice.

Step 1.

Open Cydia and navigate to Manage

Step 2.

Click on Sources and from the top right tap on “edit” and from the top left choose “add”. You will be prompted to enter a Cydia / APT URL, type the following without the quotation marks.

“rpteri.ch/repo/”

And wait for cydia to download and install all the data and wait for the prompt on the bottom center of the screen to say “Return to Cydia”

Step 3.

Navigate back to Cydia and manage, and once again choose Sources. You will now see the website you previously entered as a new source as “RPetri.ch Repository” tap on this and scroll down to S for SuperScroller.

Step 4.

Just like the other tweaks simply navigate to the top right Choose “Install”, “Confirm” and then once the tweak is installed it will ask you to “Restart Springboard” and your device will do a soft reset taking you back to your lockscreen.

Step 5.

And that’s it, you have now installed SuperScroller, to test this feature our simply go to settings and press the volume button up to move the page up and volume button down to move the page down.

If you wish to change the buttons to your liking you can navigate to “Settings” from your homescreen and navigate down to “Activator” and choose “Anywhere” now choose the button / action you wish to assign your buttons to your liking, so far the tweak works very well with almost every social network application like Twitter and Facebook and Safari too. I have set swipe left / right on the status bar to take my page up and down accordingly which I find to be quite useful.

I hope you found this tweak to help be helpful and yes the tweak has been confirmed to work with iOS 4.3.3 and should also work with iOS 5, the tweak is supposed to work on any iOS 4 / 5 compliant device and since most of these devices do have volume buttons this is a fairly easily available tweak requiring a few extra steps and obviously since Cydia is a requirement for this tweak it goes without saying that jailbreaking is required.

Continue Reading

Are you tired to reading “Slide to Unlock” over and over again and want to change it to something new? With this handy tweak you can now have the ability to be a professional and mess with your Slide to Unlock like a true Apple Hacker.

Step 1.

Open Cydia from your jailbroken iDevice

Step 2.

Navigate to search from the bottom bar

Step 3.

In search type

“org.thebigboss.islidetext”

Without the quotation marks and tap on the single result bearing the Power Drill icon.

Step 4.

Choose “Install” followed by “Confirm” on the top right of the screen

Step 5.

Wait for Cydia to download and install the tweak and once completed tap on “Restart Springboard” to complete the installation and make your iDevice do a soft reset.

Step 6.

Now contrary to my previous guides this tweak does NOT require you to unlock the homescreen but instead double tap on the “Slide to Unlock” Text and change it to your liking like I have shown below and choose “Apply” when done to complete the process.

And voila you have now manipulated the boring old Slide to Unlock to text to something a little more clever, post in the comments on what YOU made your new “Slide to Unlock” I chose to use “Slide for Nuke” since I am a big Call of Duty Zombies fan . I would love to see what my readers like to use.

Once again I wish to mention that I have ran and installed this on an iPod Touch 4G running iOS 4.3.3 and it most likely will work on iOS 5 but I am not making any promises. Check out some more awesome tweaks here.

The auto correct bar has made an appearance come iOS 5, this feature has been existing in Android for a while now but now that it has come to all who own an iDevice. With this simple tweak you will never have horrible mistakes made because of Autocorrect again and can choose the word you were meaning to say instead of making your whole sentence sound completely inappropriate. Sites like Damn You Autocorrect are only one of many where these people share such humiliations, with the help of the autocorrect bar you will never have to worry about being misspoken.

Step 1:

Open Cydia on your Jailbroken iDevice (Do note that the tweak itself requires iOS 4.3 or greater and it also works with iOS 5)

Step 2:

Navigate to the search button and type in

“com.rpetrich.autocorrectionbar”

Without the quotation marks

Step 3:

Tap on the single result bearing the icon of a Power Drill and choose install from the top right, Choose confirm in the next screen.

Step 4:

Wait for the iDevice to download and install the tweak and wait for “Restart Springboard” to appear on the bottom center of your screen and tap it to complete the installation and taken back to your lock screen.

Step 5:

Unlock your iDevice and navigate to settings, from settings look for “AutoCorrection Bar” as shown in the below image

When you tap on it it will allow you to enable the autocorrect bar but if you want the action button you will need iOS 5, I ran this on an iPod Touch 4G and iPhone 4 both on iOS 4.3.3 and it has been confirmed to work with iOS 5. Below are the comparisons of the AutoCorrectionBar on different iOS versions.

HTC’s Beats inspired Sensation XE has proved to be a solid product and now it looks like a white version might be available soon. The Sensation XE was the first HTC phone incorporated with Dr. Dre’s Beats technology after their deal finalized in September.

The White Sensation XE is currently listed on Expansys’ Japanese website priced at $570 and shipping is expected in between 5 to 15 days. Looks like the White model will hit other shores when the Black model sells out. With Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich confirmed for the phone it might be a pretty good phone to buy right now.

The HTC Sensation XE packs a 4.3-inch qHD Super LCD display, a 1.5GHz dual core processor which a 300 MHz bump from the original Sensations 1.2GHz processor, 768MB of RAM, 4GB of Internal memory of which 1GB if available to the user but the memory is expandable with an internal SD card slot.

The HTC Sensation XE also includes a 8MP camera with dual LED flash which records video and full 1080p HD at 30 frames per second. The camera is feature packed with support for Geo-tagging, image stabilization, touch-focus, instant capture and face detection.

Connectivity options include WiFi b/g/n, DLNA, WiFi hotspot support, Bluetooth 3.0, HSPDA connectivity and a MHL/microUSB hybrid port. The battery is a spacious 1730 mAh unit and the phone runs on Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread.

Last but not least the highlight of the HTC Sensation XE is the Beats connectivity and included Dr. Dre Beats earphones. When the earphones or any other Beats headsets the HTC Sensation XE activates a special Beats profile which makes the audio quality much better although you can get the same functionality on other Sense 3.0 phones by flashing a package available over at XDA.
