  • Samsung adds iPad 4 and iPad mini to patent infringement case

The Apple vs. Samsung saga is now not a secret anymore. Stay away if you can, but it’s hard to ignore some piece of news coming out every now and then. Samsung has had its fair share of success over in the UK while Apple has enjoyed its time in the USA. The original patent infringement case included the Galaxy series from Samsung. Later on Samsung counter sued Apple over vague wireless patents.

Initially the devices Samsung chose to sue Apple over included the older iPhones and iPads. But now that Apple has refreshed its lineup, Samsung thought it would be in their best interest to go after these new devices too. The latest two devices added to this patent infringement case is the iPad 4 and iPad Mini. According to Samsung these devices, along with the rest of iOS devices, infringe upon some UMTS wireless technology patents, and the WiFi only + cellular version over some feature patents.

This isn’t the end of this. Samsung and Apple will keep on coming up with new devices and each of these companies will keep on piling these devices up onto their respective cases. You can read more about the notice of motion here.

  • AT&T now enabling FaceTime over cellular for unlimited data customers

FaceTime is one of the most popular features in iOS devices. A very convenient way for two people with an iDevice to video chat, without the hassles of signing up or anything like that. When Apple launched Facetime it was only compatible with WiFi networks and not cellular. This was probably because networks at that time were not cut out to handle such a load. But with iOS 6 Apple officially enabled FaceTime over cellular. All network allowed unrestricted access to this feature apart from AT&T.

AT&T kept FaceTime over cellular only for users with a shared data plan. Those with grandfathered unlimited data plans were left out. It was a strange move that brought AT&T even more flack. Now however it seems as if the network has had a change in heart. Users with unlimited and tiered data plans are now reporting that FaceTime over cellular is a go on their iPhones. It’s not available for everyone just yet possibly because AT&T is slowly phasing it in. If it’s not enabled, reboot your phone to try again.

Call it an early Christmas present or anything else, but it looks as if users of America’s biggest cellular network will finally be able to enjoy FaceTime over cellular.

  • Nokia HERE now available on iOS App Store

When iOS 6 was announced, the single biggest feature was the new Apple Maps. Apple had successfully ousted Google from their mobile platform to make way for their new mapping service. Things could not have gone more disastrously in the coming months. Choke full of bugs, incorrect point of interests, embarrassingly bad 3D and what not, it was clear that Apple Maps was nothing but an unmitigated disaster. A disaster that will take some time to be fixed.

This gives way to other mapping services to make their mark. We’re already aware that Google is working on their maps app. But today Nokia has unveiled theirs. Conveniently named HERE, this new app brings Nokia’s expertise to iOS. Powered by Navteq, it offers cool new features such as Facebook integration, turn-by-turn directions, the ability to save maps for later, transit directions etc. In addition to this Nokia HERE also offers step-by-step voice-guided walk navigation and public transportation and driving directions. Nokia HERE will also let you download maps for a particular geographical location for offline viewing.

Nokia HERE is available in the iOS App Store for a price of ‘free’. Now the wait continues for Google to brings its prowess back to iOS.

  • New iMac still on track for November/December launch

Alongside the iPad Mini, Apple also unveiled the new iMac. A stark departure from the previous models, the new iMac comes in a razor thin body that puts most other all-in-ones form other OEMs to shame. The new iMac was not available immediately. Shipping was expected to be around November or December depending on region. However with all the supply issues Apple is going through, there were reports that the new iMac has also fallen victim, and has been delayed till early next year.

Fortunately for budding customers, that is not the case. The new iMac is still scheduled for its November/December launch. In fact Apple is shipping the 21-inch model right now to its distribution hubs across the world. The 27-inch model will be available by december. Both these will be in Apple Stores around the holiday season just in case you want to be an early adopter.

However that being said, there is no word on whether Apple will be able to fulfil demand for these. They’ve failed to do so for the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini in the initial launch phase, though in their defence the situation is now a lot better, and iMac isn’t nearly as high in demand as the other two iDevices.

  • iPad Mini with Retina Display and Apple HDTV reported for 2013

2012 has been one heck of a year for Apple. Lots of new devices, lots of new software. Now the attention shifts on what to expect from Apple in the year 2013. Business Insider has gotten some juicy reports on two major products we can expect in 2013.

iPad Mini with Retina Display is the first one. As the name suggests, it’s the regular iPad Mini but with a much higher resolution screen. Update internals? Most likely since the A5 is old enough as it is. March 2013 is the expected release date for iPad Mini with Retina Display.

In November 2013 Apple will release the very highly anticipated HDTV. The sizes varying from 42-inch to 55-inch. Price ranging from $1500-2000.

In June 2013 Apple will preview iOS 7 and the next version of OS X. MacBook Air with Retina Display previewed too. This is WWDC 2013. Both software updates will have John Ive’s design language.

Other products include an iPhone 5S, new iPad and a spec bumped iPad Mini later next year. iPhone 5S is a minor spec bump, and the new iPad (iPad 5?) will be totally redesigned.

There’s nothing too shocking about this possible next years lineup. Like 2012, 2013 will be equally exciting and product filled for Apple fans.

  • Facebook for iOS now coming with Photo Sync Feature

When Google+ was launched, it didn’t really have much to offer other than being ‘just another social network’. What it did offer was a very handy feature, called Instant Upload to Android users. Basically what it did was automatically upload any picture taken from the camera to Google+, making it easier and quicker to share. Now Facebook has taken note of this feature and has started rolling out the new Photo Sync feature for iOS users.

fb Facebook for iOS now coming with Photo Sync Feature

What is Photo Sync? Pretty simple. Just like Google+, it uploads pictures taken to Facebook automatically without any user intervention. The pictures are shared in a private album which can then be made public whether the user wants it or not. The feature is currently only rolled out to selected users. To check if you’re one of them go to the Photos in the app’s sidebar navigation or the photos section of your Timeline and scroll to the bottom. You’ll find an option to check out Photo Sync and then enable it.

Facebook uses the iOS app to upload pictures in the background, and not the recently introduced Facebook integration in iOS 6. Users get a complimentary 2GB of storage space. It’s likely that Facebook will offer more storage options in the future.
