  • Google Play now has 700K apps available for download

Google has announced that there are 700,000 apps available for download at its Google Play app marketplace for Android devices. All these apps are available for smartphones as well as tablets that are running Google’s mobile operating system i.e Android.

The number Google has announced for its Google Play store is huge and closely matches Apple’s iTunes App Store which is the largest App Store of the world. Apple recently announced that there are 700,000+ apps available in its App Store for iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches. Although Apple has announced that there are over 275,000 tablet optimized apps available in its App Store, Google has always avoided providing tablet specific numbers publicly.

The news of 700,000 apps becoming available for download in Google Play Store is good for Google, developers, and more importantly Android users who have a wide range of apps available for their platform of choice – for almost everything. Google recently announced new products including Nexus 10 and Nexus 4 that are both highly capable and developer devices, and will definitely bring more interest in app developers worldwide for the Google Play marketplace. Google recently extended the seller feature of Google Play to India, that will also have a positive affect on app numbers soon.

Google’s plan of announcing the 32GB Nexus 7 along with the new Nexus 10 tablet and LG Nexus 4 smartphone was ruined when the warning for the Hurrican Sandy was issued. The company cancelled the highly anticipated Android event and is yet to announce a new date for the event.

The new upgraded model 32GB Nexus 7 was expected to get announced on October 29th and go on sale right after the event, but things didn’t went according to the plan. Although Google has not made the official announcement yet, at least one retailer in the US has started selling the new 32GB Nexus 7 model and it is now available for purchase on its stores. As reported by Droid-Life, the 32GB model is on sale at Office Depot at a price of $249, while the 16GB Nexus 7 that was selling for $249 perviously is now available for $199. Just like the Google Play store, the 8GB model that used to sell for $199 is no longer available for purchase at this retailer.

The 32GB Nexus 7 is on display at Office Depot stores and several users have confirmed that they have been able to buy this new model, that Google has yet to announce officially. While only Office Depot is reportedly selling the new model of Nexus 7, we expect others who have it in stock will follow the trend sooner or later, with or without Google’s announcement.

  • Xbox “DURANGO” Devkit Gets Sold For A Whopping $20,100!

If you were excited about the news last week regarding the rumored XBOX 72o Kinect Tool, then you’ll be ecstatic to know that the Durango Devkit that was on auction on eBay gets sold for a massive $20,100.

SuperDaE, the person who first leaked the pictures and specifications for the Durango devkit and later a screenshot which showed the capabilities of Kinect 2.0, confirmed on his twitter account that the Durango Devkit, one of the two prototype machines he placed up on auction, got sold.

“I sold one of two I own,” DaE stated on Twitter. “I still have the one that featured in news, the other one wasn’t really necessary to keep as a leg rest.”

original Xbox DURANGO Devkit Gets Sold For A Whopping $20,100!

There were 18 bidders with a total of 43 bids. The winner, at the end came in like a hawk and raised, in one bid, from an already eye-catching $16,000 to $20,000. The bid got matched so an extra $100 were chipped in.

This raises a few questions about who the mystery winner is, someone from Microsoft or Sony or a tech-enthusiast who likes to collect everything regarding new technology? Is the black PC-tower looking development kit even real to begin with?

Seeing as this was one of the two machines, we hope that we are not done with more leaks and rumors regarding the next-gen XBOX.

  • This is what Windows Phone on a BlackBerry would probably look like

The smartphone race is currently being ruled by two operating systems; iOS and Android. Together they take 90% of the pie, at least in the United States. The rest 10% is made up by the likes of BlackBerry and Windows Phone. Windows Phone holds a paltry 9% market share where as BlackBerry is still at a decent 9%.

However the numbers don’t tell the whole story. While Windows Phone is struggling to gain any market share, it is still backed up by one of the richest and biggest corporations in the world, Microsoft. It also has the full backing of Nokia. BlackBerry on the other hand is struggling to make ends meet, let alone earn profits. One of the ideas that has floated around is BlackBerry jumping the Windows Phone bandwagon like Nokia did.

conceptrimbbwin8 This is what Windows Phone on a BlackBerry would probably look likeconceptrimbbwin82 This is what Windows Phone on a BlackBerry would probably look like

This mockup is what the joint venture might look like. While it’s clearly a hasty photoshop job, the reality wouldn’t be too far away. The signature BlackBerry design with the elegance of Windows Phone. It is a striking combination. But it will probably never be true, not at least in the near future.

BlackBerry still has a viable and strong operating system on their hands, unlike Nokia which were relying on the old relic known as Symbian. It’s important to know that Microsoft did make an informal offer to RIM to make Windows Phone devices, which RIM categorically refused to. RIM is looking forward to BlackBerry OS10 for next year release which they’re hoping would bring a change in their dire fortunes.

In the mean time, those dreaming of a RIM/Microsoft love affair can look at these pictures and satisfy their desires. Perhaps RIM might reconsider? Again, that depends entirely on how well the launch of OS10 goes.

  • Nokia Lumia 900 now available for only 50$ on AT&T

According to the latest numbers by Neilsen, Windows Phone 7 currently has a miniscule 1.3% market share in the United States. That, compared to 58% of Android is almost as good as not being there. In between Windows Phone, Nokia is the only brand that is tied completely to the OS. HTC and Samsung develop Android smartphones as well so the failure of Windows Phone 7 should not effect them too much. Nokia however do not enjoy such a position. Failure of Windows Phone means failure for Nokia.

With Microsoft announcing a 7.8 update for current Windows Phone instead of the 8.0 update, many users are wondering whether it’s wise to buy into a Windows Phone 7 contract right now or not. This is a very dangerous position for Nokia because they have nothing new to offer until WP8 is available. They cannot just sit idly either because one more bad quarter and that could be the last straw. The only thing left is to somehow make their Lumia phones seem less of a pointless purchase than they really are.

To do this Nokia has slashed the price of their top end Lumia 900 to just 50$ on AT&T. This is a healthy cut from the previous 100$ price. This still doesn’t mean Lumia 900 will get the big WP8 update, but it does mean that it’s now one of the cheapest higher end smartphone available on the market today. There are many people who’re not bothered by the lack of Windows Phone 8 update and just want a cheap smartphone for basic use. For them Lumia 900 just became a whole lot more attractive.

But will this be enough to get Nokia by this quarter till they come out with a Windows Phone 8 device? It may just be enough, by a very small margin.
