  • Apple iMac and Mac mini updates to retain their current price

With all the excitement towards the iPad mini launch next, it’s easy to forget Apple makes other products. The products in question is the all in one desktop called iMac and the small form factor PC called the Mac mini. Though not quite the best sellers as the MacBook, they do form an important part of Apple’s arsenal. iMac and Mac mini updates are a near certainty for next week

Reports are coming in about the pricing on these products. According to 9to5Mac both the iMac and Mac mini will retain their current price. $599, $799, and $999 for the two standard models and single server model for the Mac mini and $1199, $1499, $1699, and $1999 for the iMac. Apple is also reported to offer a 8GB RAM module for the Mac mini and iMac for the first time. Previously it was only 4GB. This means the Mac mini can be upgraded to 16GB and iMac to 32GB of RAM.

Nothing else is known about the iMac and Mac mini updates. There are isolated reports about a possibility of a Retina Display on the iMac but so far it seems unlikely due to costs and availability. We will find out more on the 23rd when Apple gives out the official details.

  • HTC One S SE with 64GB memory and white color announced

HTC One S is one of the best Android smartphones available in the market today and HTC certainly knows that. To make it even better HTC has announced a new model of the phone that has a gorgeous white unibody design and 64GB internal storage. As HTCSource reports, this new model of One S is officially called HTC One S SE, in which SE stands for Special Edition.

Currently only official Taiwanese site of HTC has this new model listed, making it unclear whether this device is intended for Asian markets only or HTC has plans of making it available in other parts of the world too. While HTC One S SE has upgraded storage than previous HTC One S models, all other specifications are unchanged. It still has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8-megapixel camera, and other features that are same as the older models.

HTC One S SE looks beautiful with its color combination of white, black, and red and it would be a shame if HTC decides to keep this great model of HTC One S limited to Asian or Taiwanese market only. We certainly hope that the device is made available in Europe and America in the coming weeks. Check out the gallery featuring images of HTC One S SE below.

  • Google Maps for iOS in Alpha testing

While iPhone 5 and iOS 6 have both been generally well received amongst critics and users alike, there is however one aspect that has come under unprecedented criticism. That part is the new Maps app from Apple. They have been mocked, criticised and reviewed negatively all over the internet. So much so that Apple itself came out with an apology. Many people miss the old Google Maps in iOS 5 and after iOS 6 the wish has been for a Google Maps for iOS app.

Though Google has been improving its browser version of maps for Safari by adding Street View, it still does not compare to a standalone Google Maps for iOS app. There have been rumours about a possible release sometime later this year but so far we’ve not seen a credible proof of its existence. Until now. The images shown are from an alpha release of Google Maps for iOS app. It is vector-based, has two-finger rotation to any angle, it’s fast and slick and it supports iPhone 5.

Alpha is usually followed by beta and then the final release. There’s no telling when this app will enter those two later stages. The earliest we can expect is by the end of this year, provided these pictures above are legit.

  • FTC could bring an antitrust case against Google for using its search to hurt rivals

According to a report by Reuters Google could face an antitrust case from FTC for using its popular Google search engine to hurt rivals. Reuters reports that four out of five commissioners who were investigating this case for over a year are convinced that Google used search as a tool to promote its own products and hurt its competition while only one commissioner is skeptical and is thinking in favor of the search giant.

The report also mentions that a long list of companies had filed complains to FTC asking it to crack down on Google. Some of these companies might include Yelp and Nextag, who have already complained about Google’s actions during open hearings in the Congress. The business owners of different genres that include travel, shopping, and entertainment blame Google of downranking their results in search in favor of its own online services.

Google has always denied the allegations of it manipulating search results in favor of its own products. Company’s chairman Eric Schmidt once said about these allegations on Google ”May I simply say that I can assure you we’ve not cooked anything,”

  • Apple likely to unveil iPad mini on October 23

Another day, another iPad mini rumour. The device it being given the same treatment that iPhone 5 got before its announcement with all the details and even the exact pictures leaking before the official unveiling. We’ve seen quite a few rumours about this iPad mini that Apple will likely show the world sometime this month. And the rumour today just adds a bit of spice to the mill.

According to AllThingsDigital, Apple will be unveiling the iPad mini on October 23. The event is expected to be held at Apple’s Town Hall Auditorium on its Cupertino, Calif., headquarters which has been home to the unveilings of the iPhone 4S, redesigned MacBook Air, and OS X Lion. This date is two days before the September quarter earnings report of Apple and three days before Microsoft releases the Surface tablet.

The first date might be a coincidence, but releasing it just days before Surface tablet might be a strategic move on Apple’s part. Where we know pretty much everything about Surface tablet, there’s nothing official about the iPad mini. So far its just vapourware. Let’s hope the rumours can be put to rest in two weeks and we get to see a great tablet.

  • Purple haze effect on iPhone 5 also apparent on Android devices

The purple haze effect on iPhone 5 has gotten a lot of publicity ever since some unsuspecting user caught it. And while it isn’t a life or death situation, it has been blown well out of proportion, as it is with most iPhone related issues. Apple has also given an official response to the issue and have tried to assure users that the purple haze effect on iPhone 5 is pretty normal. Now to further add to this Consumer Reports did a test and found out that iPhone 5 isn’t the only phone that exhibits this issue. It’s persistent with Android smartphones as well.

Under situations where a bright source of light points towards the camera, even the old iPhone 4S had the same purple haze on the pictures. Some Android phones that were part of the test are top dogs like Samsung Galaxy S III and Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX. They claim that camera lens made for high end SLRs can also end up depicting the same effect, which is produced by scattered reflections inside the lens from a bright light source.

iPhone 5 because of its popularity might have gotten treated roughly it seems but by now Apple should be prepared for backlash on even the smallest of issues.
