  • Motorola announces which phones will and will not get Android Jelly Bean update

    Following Sony that recently announced the list of devices that will receive the Android Jelly Bean update, Motorola has also outted its version of the same list. The company that was acquired by Google months back has announced that it will be offering the latest version of Android to devices that were released in 2011 or later.

    Not all Motorola devices are going to receive the update as the company has announced that it isn’t possible due to its big line up of Android devices. However to please its fans the company is offering a $100 rebate on certain of its devices for those whose devices are not eligible for the Jelly Bean update. The devices that are not going to get the Jelly Bean update are listed in the table below. Some of them include Droid 3, Droid Atrix 2, Droid X2 and more. They are listed on the left of the table.

    The devices users can get a $100 rebate on include Atrix HD, Droid RAZR M, DROID RAZR MAXX HD, DROID RAZR HD, and more. They are listed on the right of the table and thus will receive the update.

    As Droid-life reports, Motorola has also published the timeline for the release of the updates based on models and region. According to the table below DROID RAZR M, RAZR HD, RAZR MAXX HD will be upgraded to Android 4.1 before 2013, while company has not announced the dates for rest of the phones yet.

  • How To Install Android 4.1 SDK And Jelly Bean Emulator On Your PC

    Android 4.1 Jelly Bean was announced back in June at Google I/O and brought along many great improvements like Project Butter. Follow the tutorial below to check out Android 4.1 Jelly Bean’s new features by installing the emulator on your PC.

    The full guide is below:

    Step 1. Download the Android SDK installer from here.

    Step 2. Install the SDK, it should be pretty straight forward.

    Step 3. Now browse to the location where the SDK is installed and click on SDK Manager. The application will attempt to fetch files from Google’s servers, let the process complete before continuing further.

    Step 4. Now choose only the files in Android 4.1 (API 16) folder and Android SDK Platform-tools.

    Step 5. Now click on Install Package on the bottom right hand corner.

    Step 6. Click on Install to start the installation process.

    Step 7. After that’s done go back to where you installed the Android SDK and open AVD Manager.

    Step 8. Click on New and add a virtual device with the following settings:

    Name: JellyBean

    Target: Select Android 4.1 from the drop down menu.

    Skin: Default

    Hardware: Abstracted LCD Density at 240, Max VM Application at 48 and Device RAM Size at 512.

    Step 9. Click on create AVD.

    Step 10. Click OK.

    Step 11. Click the AVD you just created, it should be at the top.

    Step 12. Click the Launch button.

    The emulator will now boot into Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the start up should take around 5 minutes.

    The guide to install Android 4.1.1 XXLS2 official firmware is below:

    Step 1- Download the firmware

    Step 2- Download ODIN

    Step 3- Boot your phone into download mode. Do this by switching it off and then pressing and holding the Volume Down + Home buttons together, and then pressing the Power button. You’ll see a triangle and an Android logo. Press the power button to enter download mode

    Step 4- Open ODIN on your PC. Make sure USB drivers for the phone are installed. Upon successful connection one of the ID:COM boxes will turn yellow with the COM port number.

    Step 5- Select all files you downloaded in step 1.

    • Click the PDA button. Select the file which has CODE in its name
    • Click the Phone button and select the file which has MODEM in its name
    • Click on the CSC button and select the file which has CSC in its name
    • Click the PIT button and select the .pit file

    Step 6- In ODIN select Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time options. Select repartition only if your selected the PIT file

    Step 7- Click on the start button. Installation process will start which will take 5 to 10 minutes to complete. Upon restart your phone will be updated to Android 4.1.1 XXLS2 official firmware.

  • Here’s what Project Butter looks like according to Google

    Google showcased Android 4.1 aka Jelly Bean just yesterday and already we’re very excited about some of the features shown. The new notification UI, the improved search are all something that Android users are looking forward to. However the single biggest Jelly Bean feature has to be Project Butter.

    Ice Cream Sandwich did a lot to improve Android’s image as a laggy operating system. It brought a fresh new UI with much needed enhancements in the performance area. Compared to iOS and Windows Phone though it still lags behind (no pun intended). Though this is something Google should have acknowledged earlier, better late than never I guess. Project Butter is aimed at bringing the general Android UI up to par with competitive OS as far as smoothness is concerned. We’re talking 60FPS UI.

    Without going into too much of technical details, what Project Butter does it make better use of the existing hardware on Android phones. In Galaxy Nexus for example it will use GPU more efficiently to make transitions and scrolling smooth. CPU response time will be minimized to reduce input lag to a minimum. The video above shows what it will look at. It has been recorded at 120FPS to give a better idea of how much smoother the UI on JB is compared to ICS. Notice the window transitions and app drawer.

    Google demonstrated this on their Nexus device. What about HTC and Samsung or many other OEMs? Well that is a million dollar question. Imagine Sense UI running at 60FPS. Drool worthy isn’t it for Sense fans? We’re going to have to wait for an official response from these OEMs on what their plans are regarding Jelly Bean. Rest assured it won’t be coming anytime soon.
