  • Update iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS without losing current baseband

Update iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS using RedSn0w. The latest version of RedSn0w is capable of upgrading an iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS to a newer version of iOS including iOS 6 without upgrading its baseband. This feature of RedSn0w is super useful for those who have to unlock their iPhone so that it could be used on other carriers. Follow the steps below to install a newer version of iOS on your iPhone while preserving its baseband.

Things you need for the process:

    • iOS version you are trying to upgrade to
    • RedSn0w 0.9.15b2 (Mac/Windows)

Step 1. After you have downloaded the RedSn0w for Mac or Windows and the iOS IPSW file, extract and launch RedSn0w. Windows users should open it in Admin mode.

Step 2. Click on the ‘Extras’ button and then on ‘Even More’.

Step 3. Click on the ‘Restore’ button from the menu and then click on the IPSW button. From the window that opens, select the iOS version file you have downloaded from the web and click the ‘Open’ button.

Step 4. From the prompt menu click on Yes button. Now RedSn0w will work on the firmware file you have selected. This should take less than a minute.

Step 5. Now RedSn0w will ask you to put your device in Pwned DFU mode. Select OK then connect the iOS device to your computer and turn it off.

Step 6. After device is turned off, click on the Next button. Now RedSn0w will tell you how you can put your device in DFU mode. Follow the on-screen instructions. After you have placed it in DFU mode RedSn0w will start injecting Limera1n exploit and other other stuff. This should take 1-2 minutes or less.

Step 7. After RedSn0w is finished doing its work, your device will reboot and will be running the new iOS version with the same baseband it had before.

    That’s it! Enjoy.

  • iPhone Dev-Team Releases iOS 5.0b1 Jailbreak for Developers

The iPhone Dev-team has released a new version of Redsnow – 0.9.8b1 – that developers can use to jailbreak iOS 5b1. This utilizes the limera1n bootrom exploit by geohot, which Apple can patch only by releasing new hardware.

    The following devices are supported:
    ● iPod touch 3G
    ● iPod touch 4G
    ● iPad 1
    ● iPhone3GS
    ● iPhone4 (GSM)
    ● iPhone4 (CDMA)

UNLOCKERS AND THOSE PRESERVING THEIR UNLOCKABLE BASEBANDS SHOULD STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS! You will very likely lose your unlockable baseband if you try to install iOS 5.

THIS JAILBREAK IS INTENDED ONLY FOR DEVELOPERS OF JAILBROKEN APPS! There are just too many broken components (Apple’s official apps, 3rd-party App Store apps, Cydia apps, MobileSubstrate apps, etc) for this to be useful to anyone but those truly looking to fix bugs in their iOS 5 jailbroken apps. (Seriously!)

THIS REDSN0W WILL NOT HACTIVATE 5.0b1! You need to be an iOS developer with a registered UDID to get past all the new activation screens. PLEASE DON’T PIRATE APPLE SOFTWARE! Only registered devs with Macs can develop iOS applications, and only those people will have legitimate access to the beta IPSWs.

THIS IS A TETHERED JAILBREAK ONLY! No new exploits are being exposed with this jailbreak (it uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit), but that comes at a cost. You will need to use redsn0w to “Just boot tethered now” to be able to use many things, including Cydia and Safari. If you see a white icon for Cydia, or if Cydia or Safari crash when you open them, it’s because you didn’t boot tethered.

IF YOU HAVE THE 06.15 BASEBAND ON YOUR 3GS…this redsn0w will get you past the iTunes restore error you’ll get when using the stock IPSW (nobody other than those with the 06.15 baseband should be going anywhere near the stock IPSW!).

The iPhone Dev-Team notes that this version of RedSn0w will likely work to jailbreak future iOS 5 betas by pointing to the 5.0b1 ipsw.
