  • DmC: Devil May Cry Gamescom Trailer, Dante Redesigned Again – Trailer And Screenshots Inside

Ninja Theory’s reboot of the much loved Devil May Cry franchise has been given a very dark response, it was taunted for making Dante an Emo-ish character while in reality he’s on of the most charismatic characters in gaming. After the first “new” Dante didn’t go well with the audience Ninja Theory re-designed him.

This newer Dante looks a bit buffed and less Emo than the last one. There’s also some concept art at the end of this post. So has Dante moved on from Team Edward to Team Jacob? I have one major complaint among the many smaller ones though, why can’t Ninja Theory improve the frame rate? If a visually impressive game like Bayonetta can run on 60FPS then why not DmC. • DmC: Devil May Cry Review

When DmC was first announced, the first thing that came to mind was: What the hell have they done to Dante? What happened to the bad-ass character we’ve come to love? Why replace him with a teenage punk?

Well, first we need to realize that this game is set in a parallel universe, and the story does not pick up from where the previous games left it. Think of the previous Devil May Cry games as Sam Raimi’s Spider-man movies, with the new DmC being the ‘Amazing Spiderman. Bad example, I know, but that’s how it is. It is like an unwritten rule these days that when a franchise undergoes a reboot, a new character is needed. That’s how it is with DmC.

So the question is, does the new Dante suffice? I personally believe he does. He’s obviously not as bad-ass as his predecessor, but he manages to do the job, and that’s good enough. He’s a punk, and behaves like all punks do, trying to be all cool and stylish. The previous Dante did not have to try though.

As I stated before, this game is a reboot, with a new story. Some of the basic plot points are the same though. Dante is brother to Vergil, and they are both sons of Sparda, a demon. Throughout the story, Mundus, the demon king, wants Dante killed. Meanwhile, Dante is fighting his way through demons in Limbo city where he meets Kat, a member of the Order – an organization fighting against the demons of Limbo city. The leader of the Order, Vergil, expects Dante to ally himself with them. Along the way, Dante learns that he is a Nephilim, son to a demon and an angel.

Of course, the Devil May Cry series has never been famous for it’s story. It’s the gameplay where it shines. And guess what? Ninja Theory has actually done an unexpected job of delivering great gameplay mechanics. The game is fun throughout, with each battle being fast paced and interesting. Like previous games, the player can use Dante’s sword, called Rebellion, and his dual pistols, Ebony and Ivory. New to the franchise are the Devil and Angel modes. These can be activated by holding down the triggers on your controller. The Angel mode allows Dante to use a scythe, called Osiris. This scythe is speedy, but does light damage. On the other hand, the Devil mode allows Dante to use Arbiter, a huge axe that does heavy damage. Apart from the weapons, the Angel and Devil modes allow Dante to pull himself towards enemies, or pull enemies towards him, respectively.

Switching between these modes swiftly can allow the player to exercise combos in a bewildering array of ways. The objective of producing combos is to get a higher battle rating, like in previous games. I personally found it easier to rank up my battle rating and keep the combos going in DmC, as compared to previous games, especially since the ‘pull’ feature of the Devil and Angel modes allows me to get to enemies quicker so I can continue my combos efficiently.

Boss fights were fun and interesting, sometimes posing a nice challenge and pushing the player to their limits. Items were hidden throughout the game which can be collected to improve Dante’s stats and unlock challenges. Challenges throughout the game offered a diversity to the regular gameplay, awarding the player with items if completed successfully. To take a break from the regular fighting, Limbo city would sometimes try to kill Dante through means other than employing demons. These would include trying to close the walls on him, or making the ground disappear beneath his feet, cases in which Dante has to dash through the area quickly. All these instances were fun and quick-paced, just like a hack and slash game should be.

dmc1 1 570x308 DmC: Devil May Cry Review

Despite this diversity, sometimes the game would feel repetitive. But then again, this problem persists with almost all games in this genre. If the player experiments with different types of combos and fighting techniques, the game will obviously feel fresh throughout.

Accompanying the gameplay is a great soundtrack, consisting of screams and metal music. Who doesn’t love that in a Devil May Cry game, right? The soundtrack lets the adrenaline rush through your veins throughout the game, creating a unique atmosphere found only in DmC. The combine this music with the fast-paced gameplay and you’ll get a game that is bursting with energy.

I would like to say that everything about the game’s sound is great, but I can’t. The music is perfectly fine, but the voice acting isn’t. As I said, Dante is a punk, so he speaks like one too. Sometimes, his voice can be horrible, and the dialogues get annoying and stupid. I don’t know if Ninja Theory meant for them to be humorous, but they’re not. Some of them were downright awful. Some of the bosses, like the one featured in the demo was a pain listening to.

Lastly, the graphics were neat. There was the occasional frame-tearing in cutscenes and some areas did not feel polished. But the overall look of the game was good enough. A few glitches were present here and there though. Perhaps a future update will fix these, but then again, they were negligible. The game isn’t something that you’ll feel inspired after looking at, but it does justice to the distorted Devil May Cry universe. There’s enough twisted-ness to go around.

The Secret 700x394 570x320 DmC: Devil May Cry Review

The game is great independently, but is it better than the previous ones? Maybe. That depends on why you liked the previous games in the first place. If you’re looking for one of the best hack and slash gameplay mechanics, a soundtrack that will make you feel pumped and a twisted setting, then you’ve come to the right place, and you’ll feel right at home with DmC.

TechDeville gives DmC: Devil May Cry 4/5 stars.

  • Top 5 Badass Video Game Characters

Games have evolved tremendously over the past decades. Among the various amazing things gaming has created, one of it’s creations are the characters. Some of them are cute, others are cool, while a few of them… are badass.

What exactly does it mean to be badass? How about going on a rampage, destroying everything you see? Or getting a bullet to the head and feeling nothing? Or dying and coming back to life and dying again and coming back as a remnant? Those are only a few of the things that contribute to the bad-ass-edness.

Here is a list of the top 5 badass characters in video game history.

    5. Max Payne

Payne made his first appearance in 2001 for the Microsoft Windows. Though it seemed like a regular third-person shooter, it wasn’t. Max Payne was the first game to introduce the bullet time mechanic, and it was a huge hit. But we aren’t here to talk about the game. We’re here to talk about the character himself. After killing numerous thugs, Max was still smiling. Although the fact that his expression could not change was due to the limit of the graphics of that time, but it still gives him a badass look. He smiled all the way as he killed his enemies, never feeling any remorse.

The best part about Max was his ability to simply take a painkiller and feel a lot better. No matter how hurt he was, a painkiller would do a superb job. Max gets shot in the head? Take a painkiller, wait 3 seconds, and boom, he’s all better again. Now that is badass.

Although Max was great in the game’s sequel as well, maintaining his great personality. And now, in his most recent game, he’s better than ever. Getting drunk, shaving his head, killing ruthlessly without a care in the world… Yeah, that’s really badass.

    4. Solid Snake/Big Boss

Solid Snake was a clone of Big Boss, so both of them practically have the same measure of badass-edness. Snake is a one-man army. He could sneak past, and even kill a whole army of genetically advanced soldiers. He’s trained to use all kinds of weaponry, and is an expert at CQC. What else could a person want? And to top it all off, Snake is voiced by David Hayter – the guy with the greatest badass voice. Men would die for a voice like that.

Not only did Snake fight all throughout his life, but he smoked too. Although smoking is bad for your health (a warning like this was also given during the game), it looks absolutely badass. Especially when Snake did, despite the fact that he knew he was dying. This was his way of not giving a fu**.

    3. Dante

I first saw Dante in the Devil May Cry anime, a few years back. I still remember the first episode: Dante comes into a bar and asks for a strawberry sundae, which was not given to him. Then as the people behind him turn into demons, he simply takes care of all them without feeling even a little bit of exhaustion. Eventually, he walks away, smiling, although he had been hurt on his arm. His last comment was “Make sure you have a strawberry sundae next time”. Those 5 minutes were the most badass 5 minutes ever.

And as expected, Dante is very badass in the games as well. He never feels any pain and always his cool composure. Heck, Lady shot him in the head, and he didn’t feel a thing.

And you certainly do not want to come between him and his food. A large number of demons have paid the price for that already.

    2. Sephiroth

Personally, I believe Sephiroth to be the greatest badass character, but evidence speaks against me and Kratos takes the cake. Nonetheless, Sephiroth is pretty badass. Those of you who have played FFVII will obviously agree with me. Sephiroth was born due to a horrible experiment tested on him. He was a great SOLDIER, but turned bad after he discovered the truth, after which he tried to destroy the planet.

Sephiroth is unanimously agreed to be one of the best villains ever. His looks give off an aura of badass-edness, and his exceptionally long sword contributes to it.

He burned down a village, betrayed his friends, summoned a meteor to destroy the planet and even killed Aerith! Not only that, but he didn’t even die at the end of the game. He came back in Advent Children, and caused some severe damage to Cloud. His vicious stabs in the Complete version caused me to twitch excessively. And even when he was defeated, he showed no signs of regret or sadness. He simply maintained his badass aura and faded away.

Sephiroth’s badass-edness is too complicated for words to explain. The way he spoke in the games, the way he carried out his revenge… it can only be fully understood if the player plays the game himself.

    1. Kratos

A mortal given powers by the God of War, a mortal who killed the same God of War who gave him his powers, a mortal turned into a god, a god turned into a mortal and killed and revived and then given the powers to kill a god. And finally, a mortal who killed his own family, ultimately killing his own father, Zeus. Could anything get more badass than this?

Kratos is brutal, ruthless and possibly the strongest video game character. His rage is too powerful for even himself to control. He’s slain titans and gods alike, and even thrown the world into utter chaos. His strength, will and thirst for revenge are unmatchable. He feels no sympathy, and will do anything to meet his goal.

The way he kills is inspiring. Ripping heads off, cutting off feet just to get someone’s shoes, pulling eyes out and stabbing to your hearts content. And you know the most badass thing? He was able to resist the temptations of the Goddess of Sex, Aphrodite. No mere mortal could do that.
