  • Facebook for iOS now coming with Photo Sync Feature

When Google+ was launched, it didn’t really have much to offer other than being ‘just another social network’. What it did offer was a very handy feature, called Instant Upload to Android users. Basically what it did was automatically upload any picture taken from the camera to Google+, making it easier and quicker to share. Now Facebook has taken note of this feature and has started rolling out the new Photo Sync feature for iOS users.

fb Facebook for iOS now coming with Photo Sync Feature

What is Photo Sync? Pretty simple. Just like Google+, it uploads pictures taken to Facebook automatically without any user intervention. The pictures are shared in a private album which can then be made public whether the user wants it or not. The feature is currently only rolled out to selected users. To check if you’re one of them go to the Photos in the app’s sidebar navigation or the photos section of your Timeline and scroll to the bottom. You’ll find an option to check out Photo Sync and then enable it.

Facebook uses the iOS app to upload pictures in the background, and not the recently introduced Facebook integration in iOS 6. Users get a complimentary 2GB of storage space. It’s likely that Facebook will offer more storage options in the future.

  • The Big Facebook Change – Timeline Update

It is finally happening, Facebook is going Timeline! Facebook is finally rolling the Timeline update to all of their users. Just this evening, I was browsing my profile when this nice little update appeared on top.

Facebook Timeline Ali Khan 720x173 The Big Facebook Change Timeline Update

As we reported earlier, Facebook will be making Timeline mandatory to everyone. Even if you’re not a fan of people stalking you and having a “Cover” image, you’re going to have to learn to live with the change as it’s going to be forced on every user. This is by far the biggest change Facebook has ever had.

This could be pretty bad for the people who have always been against this new change, but like every other Facebook update in the past people will learn to like it eventually.

Get ready for Timeline, or don’t. It’s coming either way.

  • Facebook for Android updated to make the photo uploading experience better

Official Facebook for Android app has received an update today which is now available for download in the Play store. The update brings several improvements to the official app, all of which are related to photo sharing using the app. Many of you would be relieved to know that Facebook has made the photo tagging experience faster for users.

With the updated version of the app users can choose an album they want to upload photos to, which was not possible before. The update also fixes the bug related to photo uploads which was affecting users who were using some other languages. While this is a minor update and there is a lot to be fix and improved in the Facebook for Android (which is still not at par with its iOS counterpart) it is nice to see regular updates from Facebook for its Android application. I am sure that a large number of those one billion Facebook users access the social network using their Android device so Facebook needs to pay some more attention of its app.

You can download Facebook for Android for your device for free from Google Play store here.

  • Timeline – Love or Hate?

I got the timeline back in October, before the official release. It felt weird that not all my friends could view it. Only those who also had the timeline at the time could see my timeline, while others saw my old page.

Nevertheless, I liked timeline. It was creative and revolutionary as your whole lives can now be stored on the internet with easy access to each of your posts. I remember that once I had to look up a post I made about a year ago. I kept scrolling downwards, but still could not find it. After I obtained timeline, I easily clicked on 2010 and found the post. It was that simple.

facebook logo Timeline Love or Hate?

But at the same time, I felt a little awkward. I thought to myself, when timeline becomes available to everyone, people would be able to view all my posts, from the very beginning. This was not a good thing because there were some things that I did not want my new friends to see. But the timeline gave them complete access.

This didn’t become a very huge issue for me since I deleted all the unwanted posts before timeline was released. And I was happy to know that Facebook gave a time of 7 days to remove all your unwanted content before they allowed your timelines to be visible. Still, for some, timeline enables ‘next-level stalking’.

The addition of cover photos is a great concept. In the old profile layout, there were 5 small pictures visible on top. Soon, third party websites allowed profile banners to be created. It was a great idea, and Facebook enhanced that with cover photos which are basically a larger versions of profile banners. This makes your profile unique and distinguishes it from others.

I do have some issues with timeline though. First of all, my relatives are now hidden. Before timeline was introduced, relatives used to be visible on the left side. Now, they aren’t visible at all. At the same time, there is also a positive point involved: my friends are no longer visible on the side. I used to consider it a nuisance for my friend list to be exposed on my profile. Good for me, timeline doesn’t make the same mistake. To view someone’s friends in timeline, you need to click a separate box.

The second, and last, issue I have with timeline is the feature which groups my YouTube videos together. I have turned on ‘auto-share’ on YouTube so that whenever I “like”, “favorite” or “comment” on a video, it automatically posts it to Facebook. In the old profile, each video was individually shown. After the change, the videos are now grouped together in the timeline.

Despite these two negative aspects of the timeline, it is a great improvement over the old layout.

I had a friend who hated the timeline when it came out. But after he saw my profile and the new features, he loved it and immediately switched to it. However, I still have a few friends who are unwilling to switch to timeline. They simply don’t want to give it a chance. And they have no idea what they’re missing.

I speak directly to the haters now: Did you not hate your current profile back when it first came out? And now, if you were asked to switch back to the old layout, you would disagree to do so. The point is, you don’t like change, but when you’re forced to accept it, you begin to comprehend it’s potential, and you don’t want to go back. Hence, I would recommend giving Timeline a chance before Facebook forces you to accept it. It’ll save you the whining for some time.

So, what do you think of the timeline so far? Let me know in the comments below.
