  • AT&T now enabling FaceTime over cellular for unlimited data customers

FaceTime is one of the most popular features in iOS devices. A very convenient way for two people with an iDevice to video chat, without the hassles of signing up or anything like that. When Apple launched Facetime it was only compatible with WiFi networks and not cellular. This was probably because networks at that time were not cut out to handle such a load. But with iOS 6 Apple officially enabled FaceTime over cellular. All network allowed unrestricted access to this feature apart from AT&T.

AT&T kept FaceTime over cellular only for users with a shared data plan. Those with grandfathered unlimited data plans were left out. It was a strange move that brought AT&T even more flack. Now however it seems as if the network has had a change in heart. Users with unlimited and tiered data plans are now reporting that FaceTime over cellular is a go on their iPhones. It’s not available for everyone just yet possibly because AT&T is slowly phasing it in. If it’s not enabled, reboot your phone to try again.

Call it an early Christmas present or anything else, but it looks as if users of America’s biggest cellular network will finally be able to enjoy FaceTime over cellular.

  • AT&T now allows FaceTime over cellular via LTE

When iOS 6 was announced one of the biggest new additions to the OS was the FaceTime over cellular feature. Previously to make FaceTime calls you needed a WiFi connection. Now with iOS 6 you could do the same using your cellular network. Nearly all cellular networks were on board except AT&T. Instead of letting anyone use the video chat feature no matter the device or data plan, AT&T decided to keep FaceTime limited to customers with new Mobile Share plans. Those with traditional data plans were left out. Needless to say AT&T got a lot of negative press, and deservedly so.

Now they have amended the FaceTime over cellular policy.

AT&T today announced it will enable FaceTime over Cellular at no extra charge for iOS 6 customers with an LTE device on any tiered data plan.  AT&T will also continue to offer FaceTime over Cellular to customers with any AT&T Mobile Share plan, as well as FaceTime over Wi-Fi, which has always been available for all customers.  AT&T expects to roll out this functionality to customers over the next eight to ten weeks.

As part of its commitment to serving customers with disabilities, AT&T is also making FaceTime over Cellular available to deaf and hard of hearing customers who qualify for special text and data-only packages.

It’s a better approach than the previous one but still leaves a lot of holes uncovered. Remaining unlimited data customers won’t be getting FaceTime over cellular in the near future. You need to be on a LTE device if you want to use FaceTime with a tiered plan, and 3G devices like the iPhone 4S have to be on a new Mobile Share plan. Verizon and Sprint on the other hand have absolutely no restrictions on FaceTime over cellular.

  • iPad 3G Hacked To Enable Full Phone and SMS Funtionality

The iPad 3G has reportedly been hacked by the guys over at iPhoneIslam to enable full Phone and SMS funtionality. This hack requires no additional hardware as the iPad already has a 3G modem and you’ll perform every cellular operation that you would perform on an iPhone.  The video of the hack in action after the break.

[box] A hack that will change the game. Can you imagine turning your iPad to a fully functional phone. With No Special Hardware all what you need is Jailbroken iPad 3G and your iPad 3G will do anything you expect from iPhone… Phone Calls, SMS, FaceTime by Phone Number… ETC[/box]

It is not yet confirmed if the video is fake or real but it is highly unlikely that this would be just a publicity stunt as iPhoneIslam has a good reputation in the jailbreaking commmunity and they’re the same guys who were behind FaceIt-3GS, a hack that enables FaceTime video calling on an iPhone 3GS. iPhoneIslam hasn’t given a released date but says PhoneItiPad will be available on the Cydia Store “very soon,” and before WWDC.
