  • PlayStation 3 Latest Firmware Update To Add Some Cool New Features

Sony has released the details on the upcoming firmware update for the PlayStation 3. According to official PlayStation blog, this new update will add the ability to auto-synch trophies and have a auto-upload function for online save data. There is a catch though, it is limited to PlayStation Plus subscribers only. Read more to find out the full change log.

Sadly, as we know, the most promising new features are only available to people who have a PlayStation Plus subscription meaning regular users won’t be able to enjoy it. So what about the regular users? What do they get with this new firmware update. Well according to the press release, the regular users are also getting some new features.

For starters, there is nothing really important. There is a new category added on XMB which will include all the Video Applications at one place for ease of use. There is also a new recommend function which will allow you to share you recommendations with others for PlayStation Store items. Along with these minor updates, this new firmware update will also bring updated support for 3D and Blu-ray playback. Read the official press release below:-

Hi everyone! As we are continuously working toward providing the best gaming and entertainment experience on PlayStation 3, I wanted to give you all a heads up on the following new features and changes coming with the next system software update (v.3.70).

To make things easier for PlayStation Plus subscribers, we’ve added the option to automate two existing features. The [Automatic Download] feature will now be called [Automatic Update] as a result of these new options.

A new auto upload function for online save data back-up will be added to make it easier to back-up your game save data. Under (Game), select the game for which you want to automatically upload saved data, and then press the Triangle button.
Also, Trophies will now sync automatically at the timing of Auto Download.
A new recommendation function will be added that enables you to share your recommendations for PlayStation Store items, such as games and videos, with PlayStation Network friends. You will be able to send messages with a store link from the product pages within the PlayStation Store.
Due to the increase in video applications being offered on PS3, we are adding a new category on the XMB called TV/Video Services. This category will include video applications such as Netflix, Hulu PLUS, and VUDU.

You’ll be able to find and download all of the video applications available on PS3 directly from this new XMB category.
A folder labeled “My Channels” within this category will allow you to easily access your downloaded applications.
Any videos downloaded from the PlayStation store will continue to be placed in the existing Video category on the XMB

Two updates for all of you enjoying Blu-ray 3D movies on PS3:

3D support will now be available when accessing Java-based special features on Blu-Ray
DTS-HD MA, DTS-HD HR decoding/bit stream output (or lossless audio) will be supported while playing Blu-ray 3D movies.
3D digital photos in MPO format can now be viewed in 3D on the XMB and in the Photo Gallery app.

The following are instructions on How To Jailbreak iOS 5 Beta 7 on iPhone 4/3GS, iPod Touch and iPad using Redsn0w 0.98b7.

The complete guide after the break.

NOTE: If you’ve already updated and are facing problems like the recovery mode loop, visit this guide HERE to downgrade to a stable release.

    Tools You’ll Need:

iOS5 Beta 7 Firmware File. Click Here.

    Redsn0w 0.98b7. Click Here.

iOS 5 Beta 6 Firmware File.

    Step One

Download the official IPSW (Depending on your device). Download and extract Redsn0w. For convenience, place all of them in a folder on the desktop.

    Step Two

Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes. When the phone shows up in iTunes select it from the list of devices on the left.  Now hold down Shift and press the restore button. You can also choose to update but restore is recommended; it’s always better to get a fresh start.

    Step Three

As soon as you press Shift+Restore, a window will pop up asking you to select the IPSW file to be used. Point it towards the Official 5.0 Beta 7 IPSW you placed in the Jailbreak folder on the desktop.

    Step Four

Once iTunes has successfully flashed your phone to the desired firmware, navigate to the Jailbreak folder on the desktop and launch Redsn0w.exe.

**Windows 7 users may need to run RedSn0w in Vista compatibility mode. You can do this by right clicking the executable and selecting Properties from the contextual menu

Once redsn0w opens, click the browse button.

    Step Five

A windows will pop up asking you to select the Official IPSW file for your desired firmware. Point it towards the Official 5.0 Beta 6 IPSW you placed in the Jailbreak folder on the desktop.

You will then be asked (if using a 3GS) if your device is a newer “fixed” model. If your’s is, then press the Yes button, click the No button otherwise. If you aren’t sure then simply press the Yes button.

    Step Six

Once the firmware has been successfully identified click Next. Redsn0w will then prepare the jailbreak data.

After the data has been prepared you will be shown a menu where you can select different jailbreak options. You may select specific options depending on your needs, but for now we will only select “Install Cydia”. Select that option and then hit next to continue.

    Step Seven

Connect the iPhone to the PC and then proceed to switch it off. Once the phone is fully turned off click Next. Remember to hold the phone in your hand before you press next  as you will have to press various buttons on the phone to make it  enter DFU mode.

    Step Eight

After pressing next, instructions to enter DFU mode will appear. To enter DFU mode, hold the power button for 3 seconds, then without letting go of the power button press the home button and power button together for 10 seconds after which let go of the power button and continue to hold the home button until your PC detects the phone. It may take several tries to get into DFU mode.

Once the phone has entered DFU mode, the process will begin. The phone will reboot.

When it’s completed it will show you this message. The phone will then reboot and the rest of the process will continue on your device.

Once your iPhone is done being jailbroken, you should see Cydia on your SpringBoard. This means the jailbreak has been carried out successfully. Congratulations on jailbreaking your iPhone 4/iPhone 3GS tethered on the iOS 5 beta 5 firmware.

NOTE: How to boot tethered jailbroken iPhone 4/iPhone 3GS after reboot, launch RedSn0w and select “Just boot tethered right now”.

  • Mandatory Xbox 360 System Update Will Be Released Today

Major Nelson has tweeted this news yesterday which talked about a new live update for the Xbox 360. Microsoft released the last major update in May which was a huge step to combat piracy as it disabled the ability to play pirates games on flashed consoles.

There is nothing new added in this update. According to Major Nelson “This update is preparation for additional system enhancements coming to Xbox 360 later this year.” This could mean that it is in preparation for the upcoming fall 2011 dashboard update.

We don’t know if this update will repeat the same thing as done by previous update and reflash the console to strip away pirating capabilities. Since after the spring 2011 dashboard update hit live in May, Pirates were successfully able to counter it by releasing a new firmware which allowed a console to retain its ability to play pirated games. People could easily flash their consoles with this firmware and could even go on Live without any fear of ban as this firmware worked stealthy.

If this update is as a counter measure for this new firmware then Microsoft is finally acknowledging the importance of piracy. This update will be released today on July 19th so better get ready for it.

Update: It seems like this update has introduced new AP checks on certain games which includes Call of Duty: Black Ops as well. This means that pirates won’t be able to play the games which were given additional security in this update.

Update 2: It seems to have different results on different drive. The most recent DVD drives which are Lite-On cannot play all the old AP 2.5 games due to new checks. The list of games that are not working due to new AP checks are:

    • Black Ops
    • AC Brotherhood
    • Halo Reach
    • Need for Speed Hot Pursuit
    • Fable 3

  • iPhone Dev-Team Releases iOS 5.0b1 Jailbreak for Developers

The iPhone Dev-team has released a new version of Redsnow – 0.9.8b1 – that developers can use to jailbreak iOS 5b1. This utilizes the limera1n bootrom exploit by geohot, which Apple can patch only by releasing new hardware.

    The following devices are supported:
    ● iPod touch 3G
    ● iPod touch 4G
    ● iPad 1
    ● iPhone3GS
    ● iPhone4 (GSM)
    ● iPhone4 (CDMA)

UNLOCKERS AND THOSE PRESERVING THEIR UNLOCKABLE BASEBANDS SHOULD STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS! You will very likely lose your unlockable baseband if you try to install iOS 5.

THIS JAILBREAK IS INTENDED ONLY FOR DEVELOPERS OF JAILBROKEN APPS! There are just too many broken components (Apple’s official apps, 3rd-party App Store apps, Cydia apps, MobileSubstrate apps, etc) for this to be useful to anyone but those truly looking to fix bugs in their iOS 5 jailbroken apps. (Seriously!)

THIS REDSN0W WILL NOT HACTIVATE 5.0b1! You need to be an iOS developer with a registered UDID to get past all the new activation screens. PLEASE DON’T PIRATE APPLE SOFTWARE! Only registered devs with Macs can develop iOS applications, and only those people will have legitimate access to the beta IPSWs.

THIS IS A TETHERED JAILBREAK ONLY! No new exploits are being exposed with this jailbreak (it uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit), but that comes at a cost. You will need to use redsn0w to “Just boot tethered now” to be able to use many things, including Cydia and Safari. If you see a white icon for Cydia, or if Cydia or Safari crash when you open them, it’s because you didn’t boot tethered.

IF YOU HAVE THE 06.15 BASEBAND ON YOUR 3GS…this redsn0w will get you past the iTunes restore error you’ll get when using the stock IPSW (nobody other than those with the 06.15 baseband should be going anywhere near the stock IPSW!).

The iPhone Dev-Team notes that this version of RedSn0w will likely work to jailbreak future iOS 5 betas by pointing to the 5.0b1 ipsw.
