  • Google preparing Google Maps app for iOS

When Scott Forstall demoed iOS 6 way back in June, he showcased the new Apple Maps as the single biggest addition to iOS’s latest iteration. Backed by TomTom and with novelty features like 3D, Apple’s hopes were to replace the existing Google Maps with a better alternate. We all know how badly it eventually turned to be. So much so that it cost Scott Forstall his job. The hopes of iOS users are for a Google Maps app for iOS. We’ve heard rumours about this much awaited app before but nothing concrete.

Wall Street Journal reports that Google is currently working on a Google maps app for iOS and that the company has distributed a test version of this app to some people outside the company. Google is currently putting on the finishing touches on this before they put it on iTunes for approval. When that will happen is unclear at this point though previous speculations pointed towards a December release.

What’s even more important is whether Apple will approve this app or not. Google Maps app for iOS will compete directly with the built in Apple Maps, and we all know how Apple feels about apps replicating built in functionality. As an iOS user, fingers crossed.

  • Google Maps for iOS in Alpha testing

While iPhone 5 and iOS 6 have both been generally well received amongst critics and users alike, there is however one aspect that has come under unprecedented criticism. That part is the new Maps app from Apple. They have been mocked, criticised and reviewed negatively all over the internet. So much so that Apple itself came out with an apology. Many people miss the old Google Maps in iOS 5 and after iOS 6 the wish has been for a Google Maps for iOS app.

Though Google has been improving its browser version of maps for Safari by adding Street View, it still does not compare to a standalone Google Maps for iOS app. There have been rumours about a possible release sometime later this year but so far we’ve not seen a credible proof of its existence. Until now. The images shown are from an alpha release of Google Maps for iOS app. It is vector-based, has two-finger rotation to any angle, it’s fast and slick and it supports iPhone 5.

Alpha is usually followed by beta and then the final release. There’s no telling when this app will enter those two later stages. The earliest we can expect is by the end of this year, provided these pictures above are legit.
