  • iPad 4 Jailbreak achieved but with a catch

Apple quietly announced the iPad 4 during the iPad mini event two weeks ago. The minor refresh to the iPad 3, iPad 4 has some serious firepower under the hood. Powered by the new A6X chip, it’s safe to assume it is the fastest tablet in the market right now. All the power aside, there is one big question mark on the iPad 4. Can it be Jailbroken? According to Grant Paul – a.k.a. chpwn, and the image below, iPad 4 jailbreak might well be around the corner.

That is cydia running on an iPad 4. So what’s the catch? Unfortunately just like the iPhone 5, iPad 4 jailbreak will need a developer account to work. This is commonly known as ‘failbreak’. And since you need a developer account, this method is out of bounds for a normal user. Such is the case with all iDevices that run the A5 or later platform. But all is not lost, technically the security measures on the A6 chip have been bypassed, they just happen to require a developer account.

With such quick progress being made with the iPad 4 jailbreak and even the iPhone 5 jailbreak, it’s only a matter of time before a public method is available. Eventually everything ends up getting hacked, it’s only a matter of time.

  • iPad tops kids and teenagers most wanted list for Christmas

The holiday season is perhaps the most lucrative season of them all for manufacturers. Hanukkah, Christmas, you name it, December’s got it all. It’s a time when people shop for their loved ones. Children are one of the biggest demographics in USA. And this survey conducted by Nielsen pretty much sums up what kids want from their parents as a Christmas present.

Children aged between 6 and 12 want an iPad for the holidays. And not the small one, but surprisingly it’s the bigger iPad 4 that tops the list. Apparently kids these days can tell the difference between A5 and A6x or a Retina and non-Retina Display. 48% kids want an iPad, Nintendo Wii U is a distant second with 39%. The new iPad Mini is at fourth with 36%, tied with the iPod Touch. 29% want a tablet ‘other than the iPad’ which could be anything from Android to Windows 8.

Even amongst teenagers (13 year and above) the iPad tops the list with 21% but is followed closely with a Computer at 19%.

It doesn’t really come as a surprise. Despite competition from low cost Android tablets, the iPad is still in a league of its own thanks to an incredibly strong and diverse eco-system of over 275,000 apps.

  • 4th gen iPad gets the iFixit treatment

Alongside the iPad Mini, Apple also announced the new 4th gen iPad. The refresh of the iPad 3 gets updates in a few key aspects. It’s got the new Lightning Connector so it’s future proof, and the old A5X chip is now replaced by the all new A6X which offers twice the performance. All for the same price. Though externally the 4th gen iPad is the same as iPad 3 (except the connector), let’s check out whether anything has changed internally with the iFixit teardown.

Design wise Apple has not changed anything internally. That is not surprising considering it’s a minor refresh and not a full upgrade. This particular version of the 4th gen iPad has a LG made display. We’re not sure if Samsung is still a supplier but considering the sour relations, we won’t hold our breath on that one. The other change is obviously the logic board which now has an A6X chip on it. The front facing camera also gets a boost to Facetime HD from the previous 0.3MP unit. And there’s the new Lightning Connector.

Repairability as expected gets a rather poor 2 out of 10 which means you’ll be replacing your shiny new tablet if anything goes wrong.
