Opera hasn’t announced what new features the updated Opera mini will bring but we’re sure that the iPad version will be pretty similar to the Opera for tablets displayed a few weeks ago. We hope the new Opera enables flash likes Skyfire for the iPhone and iPad which converts flash into HTML5 which is playable on the iDevices.

  • Apple announces the 4th generation iPad

It was almost a certainty that the iPad 3 would be getting a refresh on today’s Apple event. Previous rumours pointed towards the inclusion of a lightning port, in accordance with Apple’s move to the smaller connector. Today Apple officially unveiled the 4th generation iPad. It’s a lot like the iPad 3, but with some key differences.

First and foremost, the 4th generation iPad now comes with the all new Lightning connector. This is the new connector we saw on the iPhone 5 and iPod models, and it’s now being adopted into the iPad as well. The 4th generation iPad also comes with a new SoC. The A5X in the iPad 3 is now swapped with the new A6X which Apple claims has double the performance. The 4th generation iPad also gets  dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, Sprint and KDDI compatible LTE. A 720p FaceTime camera also included. The rest of the product has remained exactly the same with no changes what so ever; that we currently know of.

Pricing remains the same with the 16GB WiFi version for $499 and a 16GB model with cellular data on board for $629. The 4th generation iPad will be available in Apple stores as well as a host of countries on November 2nd.

  • iPad mini rumored to be thinner than current iPad

It’s that time of the year again. We’re nearing the time when Apple announces new hardware for the tech world. While we already know of the iPhone 5, the new rumor going around the block recently is regarding the iPad mini. This iPad mini will pack in a 7.85-inch screen with the resolution of 1024×768. Now there are some new rumors regarding what to expect from this mystery device. These rumors are not specs, but design related.

ipad and mini ipad iPad mini rumored to be thinner than current iPad

The iPad mini will be as thin as the iPod touch 4G, giving the tablet a thickness of only 7.2mm. The current third generation iPad measures 9.4mm in thickness so this is a substantial decrease in fat. This is even thinner than the Kindle Fire. According to reports the design of this mini iPad will be borrowed heavily from the iPod touch. Height wise it’s comparable to the Nexus 7 but it is wider. That is because of the aspect ratio Apple uses on its device screens.

Certainly some interesting numbers regarding dimensions. The throwback to the old iPod touch design will be a change from the aluminum ridden 10-inch iPads. That being said the mirror finish on the iPod touch is very scratch prone so I hope Apple does something about this issue. The rest of the looks should be the same as the bigger iPad

iPad mini, if real, should see the light of day this fall. The unveiling will occur alongside iPhone 5 so it should be an event worth watching. The iPad mini is rumored to fall under the 200-250$ price range which makes this a direct competitor of the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire somewhat. There is still plenty of time to Fall 2012 which gives Google a few months advantage to further strengthen its tablet.

  • iPad 2 (or something) shows up in China

11x0302boaelagb3 300x172 iPad 2 (or something) shows up in China

Not even the source of these images is absolutely certain that the device in his possession is a recognized iPad 2, but we can’t very well leave you spending your entire day anticipating that Apple has launched its new tablet. The above designed tablet has been procured over in China and seems to tally closely with rumor we’ve been hearing about this hardware refresh — kind of a slimmer profile, an almost entirely flat back, big speaker, and rear- and front-facing cameras. We’ve looked into the digits on the back of the tablet and the model number is one for the original Apple TV while the FCC ID is for a WiFi-only iPad, but those could be mere placeholders on this mockup and not a real working tablet. The SIM card slot looks to have been repositioned to a slot that was once expected to be an SD card reader. Other area’s of interest here include the 3G antenna, whose white cover is expected to be black on final units, and the sloped power button and headphone jack, bringing those “jumbo iPod touch” jokes to mind. So reality or something else do you find in the design? Take a look at some more snaps after the break:

  • Apple reportedly paid $21M to use Swiss Railway clock design

In the wake of all patent infringement cases it’s impossible to keep track. Even more so if it involves Apple. One such case was regarding the new clock app in the iOS 6 update for iPads. This new app had a clock that closely resembles a famous Swiss Railway clock design. Back then we heard that Apple and SBB have come to a licensing agreement that will allow Apple to continue to use the Swiss Railway clock design and SBB will ignore it from there on.

It was never revealed what the terms of agreement were and how much was Apple going to pay SBB, if they were going to pay at all. Today the amount is unveiled. Apple has reportedly agreed to pay a lump sum of $21 million to SBB for rights to use the clock design on iOS 6 on the iPad.

$21 million sounds a lot for a simple clock design, especially when Apple could have just changed the design. But in the spirits of the overall aesthetics of the clock app Apple might have deemed the $21 million necessary. Not every day you see such sums being paid out for minor designs. But then again, you rarely ever see two companies reaching agreement amicably.

  • Apple sells 3 million new iPads in just three days

The past few months have been quite busy for Apple. With iPhone 5 announced a month ago, and the iPad mini and iPad 4 a few days ago, it’s hard to keep track of so many devices coming out of Palo Alto at such pace. Apple devices have historically been well received by customers. With the iPad mini the trend is all set to continue. 1.5 million iPad Minis were forecasted to be sold over the launch weekend. Now we have some concrete figures.

According to figures just announced, Apple has managed to sell 3 million new iPads in just three days. That is twice the 1.5 million iPad 3 they managed to sell back in June. These 3 million new iPads do not yet include the cellular version and just consists of WiFi only models. The cellular version will be available in coming weeks. Apple is not specifying how many iPad minis and iPad 4 are part of this 3 million figure. With the supply issues plaguing the iPad mini, it’s safe to assume its the bulk of the 3 million sold.

With the cellular model making its way in the coming weeks, this 3 million figure will increase further. The iPad mini might be more expensive than competitive tablets, but it’s not stopping people from buying one.

  • Apple’s tablet market share drops to 50.4%

Ever since the announcement of the original iPad way back in early 2010, it has quickly become the de facto standard by which all other tablets are compared. The simplistic design, the powerful hardware and the tried and tested iOS software with a great ecosystem ensures that iPad is the leading tablet in the market. However newer players will always be a threat.

idc Apples tablet market share drops to 50.4%

And that threat comes in the form of Android tablets. While iPad is still the leader, Apple’s tablet market share has dropped from a strong 65.5% in Q2 2012 to 50.4% in Q3 2012. According to the figures by IDC the tablet market grew by 6.7% this quarter. 27.8 million tablets were sold from which iPad was responsible for half. On the other hand Samsung managed to increase its share to 18%.

While 50% is an incredibly strong position to be in, Apple faces extremely stiff competition from the likes of Samsung and Asus in the Android tablet sector. Samsung with its Galaxy Tab series and Asus with the Transformer series. Not to mention the competitively priced Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. Apple’s tablet market share faces stiff competition in the coming months. Whether they can fight it off with the iPad 4 and iPad mini is yet to be seen.

  • Will Microsoft unveil its own Windows 8 tablet?

Monday will be a special day for Microsoft lovers. The company is set to unveil a slew of new product developments and hardware. We will get to see the next version of Windows Phone and development on Windows 8. However the biggest news thus far has been the speculation that Microsoft will unveil a tablet running Windows 8.

What’s so special about this tablet considering we’ve already seen numerous? Well it will be the first time in the company’s 37 year old history that it’ll offer computer hardware of its own. This is territory completely unknown to Microsoft. Throughout the 80s and 90s the business practice has been to license software to other OEMs and let them design and manufacture their own hardware. And to Microsoft’s credit it did end up making them the biggest and most lucrative software company in the world. However the landscape of personal computing has changed monumentally in the last 3 to 4 years. With the success of the iPad, it’s not uncommon for companies to follow suit. This tablet from Microsoft will go squarely against Apple’s iPad.

What’s the advantage of making your own hardware? Well for starters it will cement Microsoft’s name as a competitive hardware manufacturer, if this tablet is indeed true. But mostly from what we’ve seen from Apple, the most convenient and effective way of offering customers the best possible experience is to design both the software and hardware yourself. Google has been doing it for a while now with their Nexus lineup of phones and their upcoming Nexus tablet.

With this tablet Microsoft can hope to create a tablet that will serve as a benchmark for all other tablets. It wont necessarily have to be cutting edge, Nexus phones are proof of that. But the blend of hardware and software will certainly be right up with the very best. Don’t forget the timely updates too, something Apple has almost become an expert at.

No word on the specs yet. And to be honest this tablet will be more than just about mere specs. It’s a turning point for Microsoft as a software developer. It’s new territory for them and it will come with its own set of risks. Will this tablet be able to challenge the mighty iPad? Only time will tell.
