  • Nokia HERE now available on iOS App Store

When iOS 6 was announced, the single biggest feature was the new Apple Maps. Apple had successfully ousted Google from their mobile platform to make way for their new mapping service. Things could not have gone more disastrously in the coming months. Choke full of bugs, incorrect point of interests, embarrassingly bad 3D and what not, it was clear that Apple Maps was nothing but an unmitigated disaster. A disaster that will take some time to be fixed.

This gives way to other mapping services to make their mark. We’re already aware that Google is working on their maps app. But today Nokia has unveiled theirs. Conveniently named HERE, this new app brings Nokia’s expertise to iOS. Powered by Navteq, it offers cool new features such as Facebook integration, turn-by-turn directions, the ability to save maps for later, transit directions etc. In addition to this Nokia HERE also offers step-by-step voice-guided walk navigation and public transportation and driving directions. Nokia HERE will also let you download maps for a particular geographical location for offline viewing.

Nokia HERE is available in the iOS App Store for a price of ‘free’. Now the wait continues for Google to brings its prowess back to iOS.

  • Nokia Axes the Ovi Label, Rebranding Everything to “Nokia Services”

The Ovi label was certainly short lived, Nokia’s first attempt at creating an integrated ecosystem. The mobile phone giant has stated in a press release that it will evolve its brand identity by renaming the aforementioned to Nokia services. The transition will begin somewhere between July and August, with the intention of it being completed in all regions by 2012. This was sort of expected attributing to the partnership between Nokia and Microsoft. The full press release after the break.

[box] GLOBAL – Starting with first services on some of the new Nokia devices in July and August, Ovi services will be rebranded as Nokia services in a transition expected to continue into 2012. Each of the services under the Ovi umbrella will simply be rebranded as Nokia, with no planned disruption to the service roadmaps. Nokia’s EVP and Chief Marketing Officer, Jerri DeVard explains the shift: “We have made the decision to change our service branding from Ovi to Nokia. By centralizing our services identity under one brand, not two, we will reinforce the powerful master brand of Nokia and unify our brand architecture – while continuing to deliver compellingopportunities and experiences for partners and consumers alike.” The transition from Ovi to Nokia will begin in July this year, with the intention of it being completed across all countries and all services by the end of 2012. It’s likely that anybody buying a new Nokia smartphone or mobile phone later this year will start to see the new branding on services included within. However anybody already owning a Nokia phone will see this new rebranding through future software updates. Jerri continues: “The reasons for this decision includes the fact that Nokia is a well-known and highly-loved brand the world over. Our mobile experiences are tightly integrated with our devices – there is no longer a differentiation. For example, if consumers want the best mobile navigation experience, they know it’s a Nokia that they can rely on. These last few years, and moving forward, our mission remains unchanged: we will continue our work to deliver compelling, unified mobile service offerings and next-generation, disruptive technologies.” This is solely a name-changing exercise and the service roadmaps will continue exactly as planned. The only difference consumers can expect to see is the replacement of the word Ovi with Nokia, not only on their device software but also in other places such as printed material or online media and advertisements. The transition should be a smooth and seamless one.[/box]

  • Nokia Lumia 900 now available for only 50$ on AT&T

According to the latest numbers by Neilsen, Windows Phone 7 currently has a miniscule 1.3% market share in the United States. That, compared to 58% of Android is almost as good as not being there. In between Windows Phone, Nokia is the only brand that is tied completely to the OS. HTC and Samsung develop Android smartphones as well so the failure of Windows Phone 7 should not effect them too much. Nokia however do not enjoy such a position. Failure of Windows Phone means failure for Nokia.

With Microsoft announcing a 7.8 update for current Windows Phone instead of the 8.0 update, many users are wondering whether it’s wise to buy into a Windows Phone 7 contract right now or not. This is a very dangerous position for Nokia because they have nothing new to offer until WP8 is available. They cannot just sit idly either because one more bad quarter and that could be the last straw. The only thing left is to somehow make their Lumia phones seem less of a pointless purchase than they really are.

To do this Nokia has slashed the price of their top end Lumia 900 to just 50$ on AT&T. This is a healthy cut from the previous 100$ price. This still doesn’t mean Lumia 900 will get the big WP8 update, but it does mean that it’s now one of the cheapest higher end smartphone available on the market today. There are many people who’re not bothered by the lack of Windows Phone 8 update and just want a cheap smartphone for basic use. For them Lumia 900 just became a whole lot more attractive.

But will this be enough to get Nokia by this quarter till they come out with a Windows Phone 8 device? It may just be enough, by a very small margin.
