  • PTCL Technical Fault Causes DSL Problem Nationwide

People all over Pakistan might be having trouble with their DSL connections. The fact that majority of the DSL users belong to PTCL, they might be cursing PTCL due to this problem. It is actually due to maintenance currently undergoing by PTCL.

Actually it is not a problem on PTCL side, PTCL’s link from SMW-4 is currently under planned maintenance activity. It started on 24th July and will end on 29th July providing there is no interference in the maintenance.

ptcl2 534x375 PTCL Technical Fault Causes DSL Problem Nationwide

The issues that are being experienced by everyone currently exist mainly in torrents, browsing and video streaming. People are unable to download torrent files, in some cases even torrents are not working even though they are downloaded fine. There is no fix for this issue. If you try to download a torrent file, the browser will keep loading forever, sometimes it takes 3 to 5 minutes to download torrent files and even then they don’t work and you get an error “invalid .torrent file”.

Currently, we can do nothing about it. The only way to bypass this issue is to use a proxy. Alternatively, you can try using IDM or Flashgot or any other download manager to try to download the torrent files. It can work or won’t in some cases. If the torrent site has a Magnet link, then you can just start the torrent using the Magnet link of the torrent file.

The other issue is currently with video streaming. Videos won’t stream properly. In our case, we are using 4 MB DSL but still videos are loading very slow and some videos are not even opening at all.

The only advice we can give you is to be patient. This issue is being faced by most DSL service providers in Pakistan. Nayatel emailed their customers about this issue. They have given an ETA of 29th July. You can read the email below.

  • Review: Dexpel And Laptopskins Skins, Who’s The Best Skin Maker In Pakistan?

Most of us love to personalize our gadgets, to make them such that they can be distinguished from others. Sometimes a bare laptop lid just doesn’t cut it.  That’s what the laptop skin industry thrives on, our need to customize our portable computers such that they are more aesthetically pleasing. The laptop skin concept isn’t a new one in Pakistan. It was first introduced by Lahoreonline.org (now known as Laptopskins.com.pk ) about 3 years back. Sadly, it wasn’t well received at that time. Overtime two other companies joined in to give competition, Dexpel and TechnoChameleon.  Further on, a few other companies also started to offer laptop skins, but these three were the largest. Since then, the quality and value of laptop skins has increased drastically. Each company holds special offers and discounts and grows larger in fanbase.  We decided it was time we did a review of these skins, and then decide which one of these is the best laptop skin manufacturer in Pakistan.

IMG 0918 Review: Dexpel And Laptopskins Skins, Whos The Best Skin Maker In Pakistan?

Before starting this review, I would like to thank all the 3 companies for taking the time to participate and send in the review units. Unfortunately, TechnoChameleon’s skin was redirected to a different city due to an address issue and couldn’t be recovered by the shipping company. So we would just be covering the skins by both Dexpel and Laptopskins.com.pk and then decide which one is the better.

IMG 0928 Review: Dexpel And Laptopskins Skins, Whos The Best Skin Maker In Pakistan?

A little information about the skin manufacturers:

Laptopskins.com.pk was previously known as Lahoreonline.org and was the first manufacturer to introduce laptop skins in Pakistan.  As with any other product, the first batch of skins wasn’t well received. Since then, Laptopskins.com.pk has improved on the overall quality of the skins drastically and are now a force to be reckoned with. The company is based in Lahore and operate on a delivery only basis.

IMG 0931 Review: Dexpel And Laptopskins Skins, Whos The Best Skin Maker In Pakistan?

Dexpel is undoubtedly the skin manufacturer which has the largest fanbase and is the most well advertised one. It was started around 3 years back and has been growing ever since. Dexpel offers innovative offers such as snap’n’share discounts and Eid offers. The company is also based in Lahore and operates on a delivery only basis.

Our testing criteria includes the quality and overall feel of the skin, cost, shipping time and handling of the skin, scratch resistance, water resistance, ease of application of the skin on the laptop and whether the skin leaves any residue on the laptop. We would be giving a score out of ten based on how the skin holds up in the criteria.

IMG 0936 Review: Dexpel And Laptopskins Skins, Whos The Best Skin Maker In Pakistan?

    Cost:

The laptop skins from laptopskins.pk are priced at 350 PKR with 120 PKR on shipping, for a total price of 420 PKR. Payment options include “Telenor easy paisa” money transfer, Online bank transfer and cash on delivery for lahore residents.

IMG 0945 Review: Dexpel And Laptopskins Skins, Whos The Best Skin Maker In Pakistan?

Dexpel skins are priced at 400 PKR a piece. But there are no shipping charges on the skin whatsoever, so the total price of the skin is 400 PKR. Payment options here include cash on delivery all over Pakistan, Western Union money transfer for international customers, Telenor Easy Paisa money transfer and online bank transfer.

Considering that laptop skins in UK retail for about 44 pounds, both the skins are priced quite reasonably considering the high quality material that is used in the manufacture. Dexpel does lead here but only by a small margin due to the cash on delivery option for anywhere in Pakistan.

    Dexpel: 9/10                                                            Laptopskins.pk: 8.5/10

IMG 0948 Review: Dexpel And Laptopskins Skins, Whos The Best Skin Maker In Pakistan?

    Shipping time and handling:

We received the skins from Laptopskins.com.pk 8 days after they had agreed to send in their skins.  But there was one huge problem with the package. The courier company had handled the skin very carelessly and had kept it folded. There were rifts along the skin which spoilt the design and the overall measurement of the skin which was unacceptable.

IMG 0953 Review: Dexpel And Laptopskins Skins, Whos The Best Skin Maker In Pakistan?

The skins from Dexpel were received 5 days after Dexpel had agreed to send in the units. We were very pleased that Dexpel had tagged a “Do not fold, handle with care” tag, thus ensuring that the skins would not be subject to folding and mishandling. The skin, when received, had no visible rifts on it whatsoever and maintained its original form. Dexpel leads in the shipping and handling department by a huge lead, both in the shipping time and handling of the package by the courier company.

    Dexpel:  9/10                                                            Laptopskins.pk:  5/10

IMG 0965 Review: Dexpel And Laptopskins Skins, Whos The Best Skin Maker In Pakistan?

    Ease of application:

Laptopskins.pk wins this criteria. The skin by Laptopskins.pk required a lesser effort to apply. All that was needed was to remove the back sheet of the skin and then apply it on the laptop. Due to the skins firm nature, It didn’t bend or form air bubbles at all. Infact, we applied the skin properly on our second try. It was that simple

IMG 0966 Review: Dexpel And Laptopskins Skins, Whos The Best Skin Maker In Pakistan?

Dexpel skins are fairly more difficult to apply and the given set of instructions are needed to be followed. It is quite hard to apply the skin along the exact edges of the lid and 4-5 tries are needed to avoid air bubbles and rifts along the skin.

    Dexpel: 7/10                                                              Laptopskins.pk: 9/10

IMG 0970 Review: Dexpel And Laptopskins Skins, Whos The Best Skin Maker In Pakistan?

    Quality:

This was a very difficult criteria to judge. The skins from Laptopskins.pk were undoubtedly sturdier then the dexpel skin. It had a rugged feel to it, almost suggesting that the skin was impact resistant too, though that isn’t the case. But the Dexpel skin had a more premium feel to it, due to its glossy nature. But then I took note of something. The skins from Laptopskins.pk didn’t fully stick onto the laptop and left some gaps between the skin and the lid. The skin couldn’t fully stick onto the laptop on all sides. There were also rafts in the skin and we suspect it was due to the mishandling by the courier company. In comparison, the Dexpel skin did not have any gaps between the surface and the skin, suggesting a better quality of material used for the skin and sticking agent.

    Dexpel: 9/10                                                              Laptopskins.pk: 8/10

IMG 0979 Review: Dexpel And Laptopskins Skins, Whos The Best Skin Maker In Pakistan?

    Overall look and feel:

The skin by Laptopskins.pk was very vibrant in colors. The design which they had sent us gave us an idea of the excellent contrast of the skin. It made the laptop look aggressive due to the awesome design and apparent sturdiness of the skin. The skin was matte so the design was easily visible at all angles, along with giving a better impression of the colors on the skin. The same can’t be said about the feel of the skin though. The skin was somewhat rough, which made our hands sweaty when placed on the skin. The sweaty hands somewhat reduced our grip while handling the laptop, though it wasn’t so much as to make it a serious issue. The overall look and feel of the skin was very nice to say the least.

The skin by Dexpel was easily the best looking skin we had seen by far. The glossy skin gave the HP G62 a MacBook like premium feel. The skin just looked amazing from all angles. The colors were very vibrant and the image was very detailed. It perfectly fit the G62 and wasn’t cut off or in excess from any side. The black plastic of the G62 gave a perfect contrast with the reflective green laptop skin.  We also felt that this laptop skin was much smoother then the one by laptopskins.pk, and our hands remained sweat free while placing them on the skin.

This criteria depends entirely on preference. Both the skins have excellent vibrancy and definition of colors. The skin by Laptopskins.pk definitely looks more aggressive, which I feel would appeal more to the younger crowd. But the skins by Dexpel gave the laptop a premium feel, with its excellent design and fitting. It was according to me, the best looking skin I had yet seen on a laptop. Also, the overall feel of the Dexpel skin is much better.

    Dexpel: 9.5/10                                                             Laptopskins.pk: 8.5/10

IMG 0992 Review: Dexpel And Laptopskins Skins, Whos The Best Skin Maker In Pakistan?

    Scratch and water resistance:

For the scratch resistance test, we used a pin to make slight pressure scratches on the skin. This was because in daily use, these skins would be subject to slight wear over time. True to its claim, both Dexpel and Laptopskins.pk skins were scratch proof. There were no visible scratches on the surface of the laptop. But during the scratch tests, we did notice that the skin by laptopskins.pk tore to a certain extent due to its rough texture, while the Dexpel skin had still kept its original integrity due to its much smoother surface, though now with a few scratches.

For the water resistance test, we placed both the skins on 2 separate cardboard sheets. What we did then was spray both the skins with water and let it remain there for some time. Then, we removed the skins to check for any visible water marks. As expected, both the skins didn’t let any water seep through them and there were no visible watermarks on the cardboard sheet. However, once again, we did notice that the skin by Laptopskins.pk had spoiled due to the colors of the skin mixing with the water. In comparison, the Dexpel skin kept its original integrity and the colors remained intact.

IMG 0963 Review: Dexpel And Laptopskins Skins, Whos The Best Skin Maker In Pakistan?

    Dexpel: 10/10                                                              Laptopskins.pk: 8/10

    Residue:

We left the skins applied for 6 hours each. There was no residue left on the laptop whatsoever. The laptop suffered no visual damage when both the skins were removed.

    Dexpel:10/10                                                               Laptopskins.pk:10/10

    Final Score:

    Dexpel:    63.5/70                                                        Laptopskins.pk:   57/70

IMG 0947 Review: Dexpel And Laptopskins Skins, Whos The Best Skin Maker In Pakistan?

    Verdict:

The verdict isn’t an easy one. It was really hard to decide the better skin amongst both the skins, because frankly, this is a more subjective verdict and depends entirely on the taste of the consumer. We personally believe both the skins would appeal to different types of people, the Laptopskins.pk skin attracting the younger crowd due to the sturdiness, ease of application and aggressive nature of the skin while the Dexpel skin appealing to the more mature crowd due to their glossy finish, clean cut corners and premium feel. Dexpel wins the laptop skins review comparison, and therefore, is the best laptop skin manufacturer in Pakistan according to us. But that in no way means that Laptopskins.pk is an inferior company. As you can see above, most of the scoring cut from the Laptopskins.pk skin was due to the careless shipping, which is majorly a fault of the shipping company. A simple “Do not fold, handle with care” tag on the package would ensure a safe delivery to the recipient without causing damage to the skin. But till then, Dexpel leads the laptop skins market in Pakistan, with its quick and responsible delivery, flexible payment options and one of the best looking skins we have seen yet.

  • YouTube Has Been Blocked In Pakistan

YouTube has been blocked in Pakistan on direct orders of the Prime Minister of Pakistan Raja Pervez Ashraf.

Blasphemous content will not be accepted at any cost

ISPs have started blocking the website, the process will be completed soon with the website being unavailable nationwide.

Chief Justice of Pakistan previously ordered only the blocking of blasphemous videos on YouTube but now it seems the whole website will be blocked instead mainly due to copies popping up rapidly, allowing the video to still be available.

YouTube had previously denied a removal request of the said video from the White House saying how it doesn’t violate any of its community guidelines. The video is blocked in several countries including India, Malaysia and Egypt who registered complaints to do so. Pakistan instead of registering a complaint decided to block the video themselves.

How long will the blockade last? Guess only time will tell.

This is just four months after Twitter was banned but that was just for a day.

  • Pakistan Authorities Have Blocked Over 13,000 Adult Websites

Never have I seen a banning of this scale and caliber. The Pakistan Telecom Association, also known as PTA, has blocked well over 13 thousand inappropriate / adult / anti-government websites over the past two months. While no definitive list of blocked websites has been revealed, sources close to TechDeville say the banning has not stopped yet as the number of inappropriate websites is just beyond imagination.

I applaud PTA for taking a positive step for providing a controlled and safer environment for our children and youth to surf online. A lot of the major proxy websites have also been blocked. While the sad part still remains, there are still limitless ways to bypass these bans, but the efforts are still appreciated and it will continue in a positive direction.

While some people are calling this an attack on the freedom of speech, I simply don’t see how adult websites were contributing anything to “Freedom of speech”, freedom of clothes maybe.

  • Twitter Blocked In Pakistan Over Blasphemous Content

The popular micro-blogging site Twitter has been banned today in Pakistan under direct orders from Raja Parvez Ashraf who’s the Minister for Information. The ban isn’t limited to just PTCL (the country’s biggest ISP) as users of almost all the ISPs of Pakistan report the inability to access the site.

According to ProPakistani’s sources the ban was issued in regard to blasphemous content being shared and displayed on the site. PTA is reported to have contacted Twitter and even Facebook and warned them that if even one page containing blasphemous content was read by users in Pakistan the website would be banned.

No official release has been posted yet but we’ll keep you posted.

  • PTCL Finally Launches 50 MB VDSL In Pakistan

This was no surprise as PTCL already announced this news a couple of months ago. We covered it here. This new technology is finally launched by PTCL but it does cost a lot of money.

Currently, PTCL is having a maintenance period and PTCL’s link from SMW-4 is under planned maintenance activity. You can read more about it from here. Due to this, Broadband connections in whole Pakistan are experiencing issues. This problem is estimated to be fixed on 29th July if the conditions are favorable.

Suddenly, this news popped up on PTCL’s official site that now they are offering VDSL internet in Pakistan. They are calling it Ultranet, according to the service package charges, you can have 10 mbps VDSL internet for 9,999 PKR per month, sadly you will also have to pay for the installation charges which are another 10,000 PKR including the cost of Modem as well. So to summarize, you will have to pay 20,000 PKR just to get your hands on this new technology.

The other rates are very surprising, you can have 20 mbps internet just for 5,000 PKR more(15,000 PKR). The installation charges are the same for both of these packages. Now this may be the most shocking pricing scheme. I mean come on, if we can have 10 mbps for 10,000 PKR per month, how the hell can we afford 50 mbps. It may cost 30 to 40,000 PKR per month. Unfortunately, we were wrong. Due to the weird pricing scheme of PTCL, they are offering 50 mbps VDSL internet just for 20,000 PKR per month. Surprised? We were also shocked to see this as well.

This pricing scheme really makes us suspicious. I mean when PTCL can’t even afford to provide a constant and stable 4 MB DSL connection, how will they manage this new technology. Their infrastructure is widely known for having problems. So we can say for sure that it will barely be able to reach the advertized 50 mbps speed.

This service is currently available only in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad. You can read the full press release below or go here for the official press release.

  • Editorial: A Tale About Apple

This is about a Pakistani with an Apple product. A guy living in a third-world country.  This is a story about me, Ali Khan, the Founder of this fine establishment TechDeville.com, this is a tale about me and my iPod Classic 80GB and how Apple Authorized Resellers helped (or almost destroyed) me. It all starts two years ago when I get this sweet baby as a present from my beloved Uncle, I took care of it more than anything else. It was a magical two years, unlimited music, mood swing control, you name it, my iPod was there to help me out.

The tragedy began when just two months ago my iPod died on me and that too when the warranty had ended. Without any physical damage, it just wouldn’t turn on. So I did what any man in my position would do at an emergency situation and instantly Googled it. Tried all the reset/restore remedies but none worked. Now since I live in Karachi, we don’t have official Apple Stores, we have authorized resellers. So I started writing down the addresses of each one to go visit to see if it could be cured. This is a tale about my experience (or lack thereof) regarding the AUTHORIZED resellers.

    My First Visit: Bawany Technologies

Bawany Technologies are Apple’s first authorized resellers in Pakistan. That alone was enough to arouse my trust in them. Now I was very skeptical about this visit, as I didn’t know if they’d actually give me any good answers. But I still went, as helpless as I was to see my iPod display that fine Apple again. Well upon arrival to the extraordinarily immaculate store, I had a smile on my face and without hesitation asked the sales rep about my issue. His immediate response was:

“Sorry, we do not fix iPods. No one in Karachi can fix iPods, no other reseller can fix iPods.”

Well THAT was a giant blow to my innocent smile. I was left with no questions as the guy already answered any query that might develop in my dubious little head. So, sad and with my head down, I left the store. Checking the name “Bawany” off of my list.

    Website for the curious: http://www.bawanytech.com/

My advice about Bawany: Yeah, they can’t help you unless you’re under warranty or wanna buy something new. Service was below-par too. Nothing I’d go back to.

    My Second Visit: iTech

After getting the extremely negative let-down from Bawany Technologies, I went on to iTech which was second on my list. Now their website clearly states that they take old iPod and exchange them for new ones, well it doesn’t work for dead old iPods. Still I went in. Again, another extremely lavish store with MacBooks on display, enough to make any geek drool. I went on to talk to the sales rep, I won’t name any names. Now upon my sad confession over my iPod, the nice man told me they can fix any Apple Product, he said:

“We have CERTIFIED APPLE ENGINEERS. We have spare parts NO ONE IN KARACHI has. We have fixed EVERY KNOWN issue. You just have to sign this paper enabling us to fix the iPod, and you’re good to go.”

As soon as I heard those magical capitalized words above, my hands went on their own and signed the paper. Happy and content that I’d get my iPod fixed, I left the store in hopes of a brighter tomorrow. A week later, I went back to iTech to take my product, the guy told me it wasn’t fixed, it can’t be fixed by ANYONE and then he went on to say this to my face:

“However, you could sell this here FOR 500 RUPEES( 5 DOLLARS) and we’ll USE IT FOR SCRAP. It has NO VALUE left.”

Now listening to the above quoted line, I was enraged, angry, wanted to make scrap out of him, but being a good human being I quietly took my dead iPod (wrapped in paper) and walked out, while some lady bought a MacBook Pro and the guy was nothing but nice to her(shows how much money talks in this world).

iTech too has a website: www.itechpk.com

What I think about iTech: I don’t think I need to elaborate on it further or this article would be blasphemous!

The Depression Phase: Dead iPod Needs Burial

So since none of the above mentioned “AUTHORIZED RESELLERS” had a sound solution for me. I finally put my dead iPod in its box and decided to get a new one. While looking online for a better iPod Reseller one day, I stumbled upon Media Center. It was a gamble but my heart still wanted my dead iPod to be of use, so I called them up and explained my story. They told me to visit their service center the very next day. And so I went.

    THE Authorized Reseller: Media Center

So my third and last venture in my dead iPod story is Media Center. Another “AUTHORIZED RESELLER” I had huge doubts about. But I still took my dead iPod(Still wrapped in paper) to their outlet. Met with Mr. Zuhair Younus, their General Manager, he made me wait in the waiting area(which was amazingly lavish by the way) for twenty minutes. After which he came to me with my poor iPod and told me the magic words that lit up my heart:

“This iPod can be exchanged for another iPod Classic 80GB for 11,000 Rupees (105 Dollars) and will be with you within 2 weeks.”

BLISS!! SHEER BLISS!! Those words uttered were like music to my ears through a pair of Beats By Dre Studios! I quickly signed the letter and said my final goodbyes to the soldier lost in battle. I’ll receive my new iPod in a few days. Media Center did good and succeeded.

    Media Center’s Website: www.mediacenterpk.com

My thoughts about Media Center: BLISS!! SHEER BLISS!!

    Moral Of The (True) Story

Apple Resellers in Pakistan aren’t all they seem to be. We have merely four to five in the entire country which are actually authorized by Apple themselves. And out of them I found only Media Center to be the helpful and TRULY AUTHORIZED one. This customer is a happy camper. And I will without a heartbeat go back to Media Center for any or all Apple needs.

    Thank you for reading.

PTCL Applies Monthly Data Limit To Its Broadband Packages, Revises Tariff Rates

Posted In Miscellaneous, Miscellaneous News, Technology, Technology News – By Khurram Imtiaz

On Sunday, July 31st, 2011 With

It seems like our worst nightmare have already started as PTCL has decided to limit the monthly bandwidth of it’s high speed DSL users. It has also decided to increase the price of its Broadband packages.

This is a confirmed rumor from internal sources at PTCL and also ProPakistani has confirmed this news. This new pricing scheme will be effective on 1st August.

According to the new data rates, the student package price has been increased from 879 to 929 rs per month. The simple bundle package which included 1 MB DSL internet, 150 on-net free minutes and unlimited “Keh Do SMS” still retains its original price of 999 rs per month.

But the biggest and most shocking news is that now 4 MB, 6MB and 8MB are no longer unlimited packages. They are still unlimited in another sort of way but you have to pay extra 1000 to get the unlimited packages. The new price rate is as follows:-

    Limited Broadband Packages

    (50GB Download Limit)

    Unlimited Broadband Packages
    4Mbps – Rs. 2000 4Mbps – Rs. 3000
    6Mbps – Rs. 5000 6Mbps – Rs. 6000
    8Mbps – Rs. 7000 8Mbps – Rs. 8000

While 1 MB and 2 MB still remain unlimited and uncapped broadband, this news will surely upset a lot of PTCL customers who brought the high speed DSL in order to get unlimited downloads at high speed. If a user passes the 50 GB download limit, then he will have to pay extra 1000 rs which he will get in his bill.

This is really a bad decision by PTCL and it will make them lose more customers. I was already getting tired of their lack of customer support which really sucked and now this step has put the final nail in the coffin. I am already thinking of switching to a different DSL service provider.

What are your thoughts regarding this news. Do you think this step was necessary or not? What do you suggest is the best Broadband service provider in Pakistan? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Update: The installation chargers have also been increased from 590 rs to 1000 rs.
