  • Ubisoft Going Free-To-Play, Says 95% PC Gamers Are Pirates

A sad news indeed for pirates when Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot talked about why the company is now turning all its focus on free-to-play titles for PC, blaming PC piracy for it. He then states that how only five to seven percent of free-to-play users pay for the product via online shop, which is the same for the amount of people who pay for hard copies of their games.

The advantage of F2P is that we can get revenue from countries where we couldn’t previously – places where our products were played but not bought. Now with F2P we gain revenue, which helps brands last longer.

It’s a way to get closer to your customers, to make sure you have a revenue. On PC it’s only around five to seven per cent of the players who pay for F2P, but normally on PC it’s only about five to seven per cent who pay anyway, the rest is pirated. It’s around a 93-95 per cent piracy rate, so it ends up at about the same percentage. The revenue we get from the people who play is more long term, so we can continue to bring content.

They also released a PC client recently to compete with Steam and Origin.

With Ubisoft also joining the Free-To-Play wagon, who knows what the future might bring for PC gamers. Piracy is like a double-edged sword, where it can hurt the revenue of a company whereas it can also promote and bring light to the company’s hardwork which means more recognition of the developer, can also lead to legit purchasing in the future etc.

Ubisoft is a French global video game publisher and developer with titles and series like Prince Of Persia, Assassin’s Creed, Tom Clancy brand etc under its belt.

  • Mandatory Xbox 360 System Update Will Be Released Today

Major Nelson has tweeted this news yesterday which talked about a new live update for the Xbox 360. Microsoft released the last major update in May which was a huge step to combat piracy as it disabled the ability to play pirates games on flashed consoles.

There is nothing new added in this update. According to Major Nelson “This update is preparation for additional system enhancements coming to Xbox 360 later this year.” This could mean that it is in preparation for the upcoming fall 2011 dashboard update.

We don’t know if this update will repeat the same thing as done by previous update and reflash the console to strip away pirating capabilities. Since after the spring 2011 dashboard update hit live in May, Pirates were successfully able to counter it by releasing a new firmware which allowed a console to retain its ability to play pirated games. People could easily flash their consoles with this firmware and could even go on Live without any fear of ban as this firmware worked stealthy.

If this update is as a counter measure for this new firmware then Microsoft is finally acknowledging the importance of piracy. This update will be released today on July 19th so better get ready for it.

Update: It seems like this update has introduced new AP checks on certain games which includes Call of Duty: Black Ops as well. This means that pirates won’t be able to play the games which were given additional security in this update.

Update 2: It seems to have different results on different drive. The most recent DVD drives which are Lite-On cannot play all the old AP 2.5 games due to new checks. The list of games that are not working due to new AP checks are:

    • Black Ops
    • AC Brotherhood
    • Halo Reach
    • Need for Speed Hot Pursuit
    • Fable 3
