  • Downgrade iOS 6.0.1 to 5.1.1on iDevices using Redsn0w

Apple released the 6.0.1 version of iOS only a few weeks ago to squash a few bugs that plagued the iPhone 5. The release was also available for older iPhones, iPods and iPads. Unfortunately the jailbreak scene on iOS 6.0.1 is pretty grim at the moment, with only a tethered option available so far. For a proper untethered jailbreak you will need to downgrade iOS 6.0.1 to 5.1.1.

Fortunately though there is a way to downgrade iOS 6.0.1 to 5.1.1 for those looking for an untethered jailbreak. The method below is only for older iOS devices, running A4 or below chipset. Which means newer devices like iPhone 5, iPad 4 and such are out.

redsnow Downgrade iOS 6.0.1 to 5.1.1on iDevices using Redsn0w

Step 1- Download Redsn0w for Mac or Windows.

Step 2- Download the necessary IPSW for the device you’re using.

Step 3- Extract redsn0w.zip and run the redsn0w file

Step 4- Navigate to Extras -> Even more -> Restore and choose the IPSW for your relevant device.

Step 5- If you rely on ultrasn0w for software unlock, click Yes when prompted with ”Prevent Baseband Update?”

Step 6- Follow the steps to enter DFU mode.

Step 7- When in DFU mode redsn0w will scan Cydia to locate iOS 5.1.1 SHSH blobs.

Step 8- Wait for the process to finish.

When it’s finished you will have downgraded iOS 6.0.1 to 5.1.1 on your iDevice.

  • RedSn0w 0.9.8b7 For Windows And Mac Released, Brings Support For Updated iPad iOS 5 BETA 6 IPSW

The iPhone Dev Team has released RedSn0w 0.9.8b7 today which brings support for the updated iOS 5 BETA 6 IPSW file for the iPad 1. The update brings a few minor changes which we’ll discuss after the break

RedSn0w 0.9.8b7 was released mainly to bring support for the iOS BETA 6 IPSW of which Apple didn’t change the version number or filename, so basically BETA 7 of RedSnow 0.9.8 can handle both the old and new versions of the firmware. The Dev Team also added strict support for iOS 4.3.5 so now you can’t point RedSn0w to IPSW files of 4.29 and 4.3.4.

Update #7: Apple updated the iPad1 iOS5b6 IPSW without changing its version number or filename, so we’re releasing redsn0w 0.9.8b7 to handle both the original and changed IPSW. We’ve also added explicit support for a tethered 4.3.5/4.2.10 jailbreak (instead of pointing at the 4.3.4/4.2.9 IPSWs) and fixed a 4.2.10 problem.

  • iPhone Dev-Team Releases iOS 5.0b1 Jailbreak for Developers

The iPhone Dev-team has released a new version of Redsnow – 0.9.8b1 – that developers can use to jailbreak iOS 5b1. This utilizes the limera1n bootrom exploit by geohot, which Apple can patch only by releasing new hardware.

    The following devices are supported:
    ● iPod touch 3G
    ● iPod touch 4G
    ● iPad 1
    ● iPhone3GS
    ● iPhone4 (GSM)
    ● iPhone4 (CDMA)

UNLOCKERS AND THOSE PRESERVING THEIR UNLOCKABLE BASEBANDS SHOULD STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS! You will very likely lose your unlockable baseband if you try to install iOS 5.

THIS JAILBREAK IS INTENDED ONLY FOR DEVELOPERS OF JAILBROKEN APPS! There are just too many broken components (Apple’s official apps, 3rd-party App Store apps, Cydia apps, MobileSubstrate apps, etc) for this to be useful to anyone but those truly looking to fix bugs in their iOS 5 jailbroken apps. (Seriously!)

THIS REDSN0W WILL NOT HACTIVATE 5.0b1! You need to be an iOS developer with a registered UDID to get past all the new activation screens. PLEASE DON’T PIRATE APPLE SOFTWARE! Only registered devs with Macs can develop iOS applications, and only those people will have legitimate access to the beta IPSWs.

THIS IS A TETHERED JAILBREAK ONLY! No new exploits are being exposed with this jailbreak (it uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit), but that comes at a cost. You will need to use redsn0w to “Just boot tethered now” to be able to use many things, including Cydia and Safari. If you see a white icon for Cydia, or if Cydia or Safari crash when you open them, it’s because you didn’t boot tethered.

IF YOU HAVE THE 06.15 BASEBAND ON YOUR 3GS…this redsn0w will get you past the iTunes restore error you’ll get when using the stock IPSW (nobody other than those with the 06.15 baseband should be going anywhere near the stock IPSW!).

The iPhone Dev-Team notes that this version of RedSn0w will likely work to jailbreak future iOS 5 betas by pointing to the 5.0b1 ipsw.
