  • Top 10 Street Fighter Characters

Street Fighter is undoubtedly one of the best 2D fighting games, and one of the oldest too. It’s been around for a long time, ever since the Arcade cabinets back in the 80s. In the first Street Fighter game, the player could only have Ryu as a playable character (Unless Ryu loses to Ken, in which case you play as the latter for the remainder of the game), but after the premise of Street Fighter II, there have been numerous playable characters that have gained quite a reputation.

Furthermore, the Street Fighter Animated Series have further provided information about the origins of these characters which increase their level of appeal. Being an avid Street Fighter fan, and haven seen the Animated Series, I have gained enough knowledge to determine which characters are the best. Therefore, here is a list of the top 10 Street Fighter characters.

    10. M. Bison

Okay, he’s not the best villain out there, but he’s a good character nonetheless. He lacks the evil radiance that every good villain should have. Despite this, his Psycho Power is quite… powerful. And it is for this reason that he is the leader of Shadaloo and has the capability to conquer the world.

    9. Zangief

SSF2T Zangief Top 10 Street Fighter Characters

I shudder at his very name. A large, muscular, naked (save for the underwear and the boots), hairy-chested guy. Or, in other words, a stereotypical Russian. We all love Zangief, but we fear him too. His attacks are incredibly powerful and difficult to block and dodge too. He may not have any projectiles, but compared to his brute strength, projectiles are for wimps.

    8. Cammy

Cammy is one of the most popular choices amongst fans. But for what reason? Her moves or her skimpy outfit? Everyone has their own reasons. And whatever they may be, most players can use Cammy proficiently and conquer their enemies if they play carefully. She is without mercy.

    7. Guile

SSF2T Guile Top 10 Street Fighter Characters

Cammy and Guile are similar in a number of ways. The best example of their similarity is that they are both very serious about fighting and have a proper, official cause for it, instead of personal reasons. You can see this striking similarity by watching their intros in Street Fighter IV. That being said, Guile is a very powerful character; both in the animated series and the video games. He may not be very popular but it’s not like he cares either. And does anyone else feel that the shape of his hair is unique?

    6. Vega

Many would disagree if I said Vega was a fair fighter. His mask and claws upset the balance of the game as they give him an edge. I personally feel that Vega is overpowered, but ultimately, it’s not easy to master him. Since he’s quite different with his moves, many players fall to their knees before him. In the Animated Series, he almost overpowered Ken before the match ended in a draw when both the fighters became unconscious. His lust for blood is interesting and his mask adds to his enigmatic, yet cool personality.

    5. Blanka

This green little fighter is crazy. Literally. Blanka has several advantages. One of his moves prevents you from going near him, but when you decide to use your projectiles, he can swiftly dodge them and counter attack. The only way to beat him is to match his speed… or play against a complete newbie.

    4. Chun Li

The first female fighter, making her premise in Street Fighter 2, where she was the only female fighter. When I first played the game, I thought it was not fair for the guys to beat up a single Chinese girl with a cute face. But as it turned out, she was a tough cookie. She may seem all cute and cheery on the outside, but she’s a ruthless fighter when the time comes. Chun Li is a widely recognized character and continues to be considered one of the best and prominent Street Fighter characters.

    3. Ryu

Who didn’t see him coming? Ryu has been the face of Street Fighter since the first game. Without him, there would be no Street Fighter and I wouldn’t be writing this opinion piece. He’s a lone warrior, with only one objective: To improve upon his skills and become stronger.

    2. Ken

SF3 Ken Top 10 Street Fighter Characters

Both Ken and Ryu were trained under the same master, Gouken, and so their moves are identical. But Ken takes the cake here due to his better style. His spinning kick is better and faster, and his Shoryuken is fiery. Not to mention he’s rich and good with the ladies.

    1. Akuma

SF3 Akuma Top 10 Street Fighter Characters

To sum up Akuma, take Ken or Ryu, make them twice as strong and add a touch of evil along with some attitude. Akuma is the upgraded and enhanced version of Ken and Ryu. He is twice as strong and very evil. I personally believe him to be more evil than M. Bison. Ha, Akuma was even selected to be the final boss in Street Fighter x Tekken if the player selects characters from Tekken’s side. The only problem with Akuma is that he can appear to be slow at times. Ultimately, his amazing strength makes up for his weakness and his attacks can easily be chained together to destroy the enemy.

Well, that’s it for my opinion. Who are your favorite Street Fighter characters?

  • Street Fighter X Tekken Review

For years I have wondered what it would be like to see characters from the Street Fighter series fighting against those of the Tekken series. And now, on this day, I have witnessed these battles myself.

Street Fighter x Tekken is developed and published by Capcom. It will be released on 6th March (NA) on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. It will also be released on Windows on 11th March.

Like all fighting games, Street Fighter x Tekken has an extremely weak story. Or rather, there’s hardly any story at all. Basically, there is a conflict between the Street Fighter and Tekken characters that has been engaged due to an object called Pandora which has crash landed on Earth. As seen in the first few trailers, the combatants are granted more power due to this object because it releases a water-like energy.

And that pretty much sums up the story for you.

Moving on to the gameplay which is the major aspect of all games. Street Fighter x Tekken contains characters from both the franchises, but the gameplay leans more towards Street Fighter. However, Capcom makes up for this by providing grapples from the Tekken series. Some Tekken fans might not like this overall gameplay, but Namco Bandai is creating a Tekken x Street Fighter, which will have Tekken-styled game play.

Like in Street Fighter IV, this game has Super Combos and EX attacks. A team of two is selected to fight and characters can be switched out normally, or during combos. This switching of characters is a lot of fun, especially when it is done tactically. It can be used to complacently turn the tide of battle. Also, combos can be chained with two characters if the Super Combo bar is completely filled.

There are two new game mechanics in SF x Tekken. The first one is the Gem System in which players can use specific gems to help them during battle. These gems are allocated before the fight. Six varieties of gems exist: attack, defense, speed, vitality, assist, and Cross Gauge. Each gem has a different colour and is activated when certain conditions in battle have been met (For example: You successfully attack the opponent for a specific number of times etc.).

At first, I had thought that this Gem System might make the game too easy, or too hard as everything would depend on the placement of the gems. However, I am pleased to say that this is not the case. The game is very well balanced. Although the strategic placement of gems is important, it’s still not a very huge deal. Ultimately, it all comes down to skill.

The next new game mechanic is the Pandora Mode. This is like that Devil Trigger thing in DMC; your character receives a lot of strength for a limited time (10 seconds to be specific). When your character has less than 25% health available, he/she can use Pandora mode, receiving increased attributes but with a limit of 10 seconds to defeat your opponent. If you are unable to fulfill your objective in 10 seconds, you lose.

Pandora mode can be used by both the players at the same time, which can be very thrilling. Pandora mode can either make you win very quickly, or lose shamefully. In other words, it’s risky. But that makes it essential as a last resort.

The game can also be played online with 4 players (2 on each team). At first I had thought that this would be weird with 4 players playing the same game. But as it turns out, it’s pretty fun.

The graphics of the game are good, but not great. They are pleasing to the eyes, but sometimes, you think that Capcom could have done better. The character designs aren’t bad either. The environments are nice, but could have used some improvement in terms of detail. Maybe we’ll see those in the ‘Super/Alpha/Ultimate SFxT”.

Similarly, the soundtrack isn’t bad either, but it ultimately, it comes down to your choice of music and OSTs. Everyone has a different taste in music, so you may/may not like the soundtrack.

Overall, this is a great fighting game. If you’re a SF or Tekken fan, you should definitely try this. At the same time, though, I would recommend that you wait for a while… because we all know Capcom will release an enhanced version of the game soon. If you think you’re satisfied with the current version, then go for it. If not, then it is wise to wait for the next version.

  • Street Fighter X Tekken Gets Crossed with InFamous

You got another reason to get a PS Vita and a copy of Street Fighter x Tekken on PS Vita. Today at Sony’s Conference Capcom announced that the PS Vita version of the Street Fighter X Tekken shall feature Cole from the famous InFamous franchise. Capcom played a short demo of the game and in the Demo Cole had it’s whirlwind and electricity attacks. Cole seems to be a pretty good character to play with. We are curious to see how the game shall be using the touched based controls of PS Vita or will it use them at all.

  • Street Fighter x Tekken bug fix announced

The latest update for Capcom’s Street Fighter x Tekken introduced a new major bug. The update was originally released to fix some minor bugs and graphical glitches. However, this new bug caused the game to crash when Rolento’s knife made contact with a fireball (e.g: Ryu’s Hadoken). Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 were affected by this bug.

Capcom has now announced a fix for this bug that will be released by mid-June according to Shoryuken. Capcom posted on it’s Unity blog saying “The dev team is hard at work investigating the issue, and plans to have a patch available soon”.

Tomoaki Ayano announced in the post, “As many of you are aware, a game breaking glitch has appeared in Street Fighter X Tekken after the release of the 1.04 update. The development team is currently examining the problem and planning to patch the game as quickly as possible. The patch to fix the glitch should be released by mid June.

“We truly apologize for this problem, and hope everyone will be patient until the patch is released. Thank you very much.”

Did you fall victim to this bug as well? What do you think of Capcom releasing the fix a little late? Let me know in the comments below.
