Apple is preparing iOS 27.2 for release next week, bringing its next major iPhone software update closer. The rollout follows iOS 27.1, a version described as exclusive to Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo.
Apple developed some iOS 27.1 features specifically for the Duo, as first reported by CNET. That makes the earlier release a focused software build for the company’s foldable handset rather than a general update across Apple’s iPhone lineup.
iOS 27.2 is Apple’s next major iPhone update
The upcoming version follows directly after the Duo-focused release and is identified as Apple’s next major iPhone software update. Three new features have been highlighted for iOS 27.2, suggesting the release will carry more than routine maintenance changes when it arrives.
The sequence matters because Apple is already building distinct software around its foldable form factor. iOS 27.1 gives the iPhone Duo features designed for that device, while the 27.2 release establishes the immediate direction of Apple’s wider iPhone software roadmap. For people tracking the company’s hardware plans, the updates show that software work for the foldable is progressing alongside the next numbered iPhone release.
Apple’s version numbering also puts a clear boundary between the two releases. The 27.1 update remains tied to the Duo, while the next build carries the 27.2 name and is expected on a separate, near-term schedule. That distinction will matter as Apple adds capabilities intended for a phone with a different physical design.
Several release details are still unclear
Apple has not provided an exact release date for iOS 27.2, and the three highlighted features have not been identified in the available reporting. The company also has not specified when the iPhone Duo will launch or where it will be available, and a full list of iOS 27.1 features exclusive to the foldable remains unknown.
