With all the excitement of iPhone 5 and a potential iPad Mini, it’s easy to forget that Apple has other products in its lineup. Products that are old but still supported via software updates. One such device is the venerable iPhone 4. You’d think that by now Apple would be close to discontinuing such an old phone, but this log from a software update shows a new version of iPhone 4.
This new version of iPhone 4 is marked iPhone 3,2. Just for comparison’s sake iPhone 3,3 is the Verizon version of iPhone 4. It’s hard to guess what this particular new version of iPhone 4 is. We can however make a few educated guesses. Apple could be updating the CPU to a low powered version. We’ve seen them do that with the iPad 2,4 which came with a more power efficient A5 chipset. Another possibility is the updating of baseband to support China Mobile. China is a huge market and providing them with a low cost iPhone 4 could be a way for Apple to make great bucks.
For now though very little is known about this. Perhaps in a week or two we get more information, but don’t expect a big upgrade on such an old phone.
