How To: Play Games On Your Android Phone Using A PS3 SixAxis/DualShock 3 Controller

Playing with the onscreen controls are really hard and ever since we laid our hands on the Xperia Play we never wanted to go back. A new app in the Android market allows you to connect your PS3′s SixAxis or DualShock 3 controller to your Android phone and play games like they were meant to be played.

The app called SixAxis controller is developed by Dancing Pixel Studios and allows you to connect your PS3 controller to your Android phone through Bluetooth. The app can only be used on games that support key bindings for now, it also requires a rooted phone to work. A brief description taken from the developer’s website:

Sixaxis Controller is an Android application which allows the Sixaxis and DualShock 3 Playstation controllers to be used as bluetooth input devices on many mobile phones and tablets. This enables the ultimate gaming experience to be had in a completely portable form factor.

Up to four controllers are supported at once, and key mappings are completely configurable, as well as the analog sticks, which are currently emulated as digital key presses.

There’s a downside to this app though, it only works with a specific Bluetooth protocol which isn’t supported on most of the HTC and newer Samsung phones. The developers hence recommend using the app with the popular CyanogenMod ROM which is known to support that Bluetooth protocol.

Use the following guide to get the app up and running on your Droid.

  1. Download and install SixAxis Controller from the Android Market, download link is at the bottom of this post.
  2. Download and install SixAxis Pairing Tool from the download link at the end of this post.
  3. Launch the SixAxis Pairing Tool, it should then say “Current Master: Searching”
  4. Connect your controller to your computer using the supplied USB cable, SixAxis Pairing Tool should give you a address in the following format: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
  5. Now launch SixAxis Controller on your phone and navigate to the Local Bluetooth Address menu.
  6. Enter that address into the SixAxis Pairing Tool on your phone and click update.
  7. Disconnect your controller and hold down the PlayStation button which if everything is done right should connect it to your phone.
