While there is no news yet on a Kingdom Hearts game for this generation. Tetsuya Nomura has stated in an interview with Dengeki PlayStation that he is preparing for a “HD technology test” for Kingdom Hearts which might impact future releases of Kingdom Hearts series.
What does this “HD technology test” mean? Is it some sort of visual demo only for Kingdom Hearts like Square Enix showed Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy VII tech demo for PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 at the time of their announcement on E3. Maybe we could get a new Kingdom Hearts game on PS Vita, which is an upcoming and powerful handheld from Sony. Maybe, it is a HD remake of Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 which were released way back on PS2.
Regardless of whatever it is, there is no way it could be Kingdom Hearts 3. There is already a rumor circulating the web that a Kingdom Hearts HD Collection will be announced to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Kingdom Hearts series. Since Nomura stated that the main reason for this “HD technology test” is to introduce new fans to the series, we can guess that it means re-releasing the original games that started it all in HD on the current generation consoles.
The last Kingdom Hearts game to be released on consoles was way back in 2006 (not counting re-releases) when Kingdom Hearts 2 graced the PS2. After that, we have yet to see a release on Next Generation consoles like PS3 or Xbox 360.
