  • Ode To XP, How Microsoft Forget Thee

Windows XP was one of the most popular operating systems to come after Windows 98. We all know how much of a failure Windows ME was, oh don’t get me started on that. Windows XP came out and introduced a whole new experience to PC users worldwide. It started selling like hotcakes. Compatibility to the max with every driver. Plug and play (keep in mind this was at the time Windows 98 was famous) and a very calming new interface. It was an amazing OS and it received its due share of respect from owners worldwide. But of course there is evolution and it does takes its toll every now and then. When Windows XP came out, Microsoft stopped giving out updates for 98, which was kind of sad at first but it was all for a greater system in the end. The sad part happens when Vista comes out.

Vista wasn’t that popular as XP, it was cursed with a compatibility flaw and had other major issues that needed to be solved beforehand but weren’t. My personal concern was, for someone who wasn’t ready or willing to move to Vista, what’s to become of Windows XP. Soon after the release, Microsoft started referring to XP as “Earlier Version Of Windows”, if users installed two OS in their PCs and one happened to be XP, it didn’t show as XP in the OS selection screen.

A while back, Windows 7 came out. By far the most perfect version of Windows to date. It too referred to its long lost brother as “Earlier Version Of Windows”. It’s a sad cruel world out there.

I mean it’s a shame, they just couldn’t have the courtesy to replace the entire condescending sentence with “Windows XP”. We love you XP, you will always be in our hearts, even if you’re not in our PCs.

  • PSN Website sign-in was taken down due to a URL exploit

Just a couple hours earlier, PSN and Qriocity sign-in was taken down and it was said that they were under maintenance due to a large amount of password reset email still being undelivered. Just after that Eurogamer and Kotaku reported that it was due to an exploit which allowed hackers to easily change passwords using only PSN account email and Date of Birth of user. It was actually an exploit in the password reset page which many users received in their email.

Sony immediately took down the sign-in services for a couple of its sites including Playstation.com and Playstation forums. The exploit was first discovered on Nyleveia.com and was later reported by NeoGAF users as well. Sony has now officially confirmed this news on the Playstation blog saying that there was no hack involved, it was just a url exploit. The statement reads:

We temporarily took down the PSN and Qriocity password reset page. Contrary to some reports, there was no hack involved. In the process of resetting of passwords there was a URL exploit that we have subsequently fixed.

Consumers who haven’t reset their passwords for PSN are still encouraged to do so directly on their PS3. Otherwise, they can continue to do so via the website as soon as we bring that site back up.

  • No PSN Restoration for Japan

As the PSN users rejoice world over, Japan seems to be left out. The government officials, not compromising on the security breach on the giant’s PSN service, have taken a hard stance towards the matter, disallowing the service’s continuation until enough information is provided about the new safeguard measures. “We met with Sony on May 6 and 13, and basically we want two things from them,” Kazushige Nobutani, director of the Media and Content Industry department at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, told Dow Jones Newswires.

Nobutani has stressed upon two areas where more information is required, before a green light is issued to the Company.

“The first is preventative measures. As of May 13, Sony was incomplete in exercising measures that they said they will do on the May 1 press conference,” Nobutani said.

The second factor is the restoration of user confidence, in regards to personal data.

“There were similar cases in the past that were caused by other firms, and we are asking Sony whether their measures are good enough when compared to countermeasures taken in the past.”

  • iPhone 5 to Begin Production in Q3 featuring CDMA-GSM Chip and 8MP Camera

With WWDC  just around the corner the iPhone rumor mill is in full swing. As if previous reports weren’t compelling enough, PCworld also reports that the iPhone 5 will be manufactured in the third quarter which will lead to a Q4 launch, citing its source, a financial analyst firm. FBR Capital Markets also said in a research note that the phone will include a 8MP camera and will use a single baseband chip for both GSM and CDMA, instead of two different phone versions for either channel. This may be the same GSM/CDMA chip that was spotted in the Verizon iPhone. They cited the information from their various industry contacts.

About 20 million iPhones will be produced in the third quarter, FBR said, with the iPhone 5 accounting for about 8 million of those; the rest will be iPhone 4 models. They further went on to say that the phone will use a 8-Megapixel CMOS sensor from Omnivision with Sony being a backup supplier. The phone is expected to sport the Dual-Core A5 processor introduced with the iPad 2.
