Review: The R.E.D. Album – Game

Jayceon Terrell Taylor, better known as Game, is an American rapper and Actor who first served the music industry in 2005, releasing his debut album “The Documentary“, which was a success, earning him two Grammy nominations. Since then the rapper has been doing his thing, often facing the ups and downs of his career and somehow surviving. Game‘s last three albums had a different feeling, portraying the image of just a West Coast Emcee, whereas The R.E.D. Album is a mixture of his life, his West Coast personality, his dreams and an amalgam for what you may want as a perfect album.

Red, is a very emotionally and intense color. It enhances
Human metabolism, increases respiration rate and raises
Blood pressure. It has a very high visibility, it is why
Stop signs, stop lights and fire equipments are usually
Painted red. It also represents one third of California’s
Gang population.

Game says in an interview:

I figured after all that I’ve been through in my life, that it was time to kinda.. Do away all my past and start all over and make a new beginning..

So The R.E.D. Album is like a new beginning, combining his last three albums, mixing them with the story of his life and producing a complete package.

This albums runs a little longer than the usual these days, of about 73 minutes in length and comprising of 21 tracks in total (excluding the Bonus tracks). Personally, I prefer (Hip-Hop) albums to have at least 15 tracks or more, because only an album that long can keep you in the mood while telling its story.

The complete Track-list:

  1. Dr. Dre Intro
  2. The City (Feat. Kendrick Lamar)
  3. Drug Test (Feat. Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg & Sly)
  4. Martians Vs Goblins (Feat. Tyler, The Creator & Lil Wayne)
  5. Red Nation (Feat. Lil Wayne)
  6. Dr. Dre 1

I will be talking about the singles and some of my personal favorites in this review.

1. The City (ft. Kendrick Lamar) is the first track after the “Dr. Dre Intro” in which Game talks about his past label situations, his present, as well as hinting his future ones “Either I’m crazy or / The Black Slim Shady or / could that be the reason that Baby said he would pay me more?“. Produced by Cool & Dre, the rapper talks about his previous albums, judging them and letting people know how he feels about them. Kendrick Lamar (a rising West Coast artist) did a verse to it which was too long (according to Game) so he chopped off the first eight bars and made it the hook, while letting him complete his verse at the end of the song. This songs really sets the mood and makes me want to listen to the whole album every time I listen to it.

2. Drug Test (ft. Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg & Sly) is a radio-friendly West Coast party track, which makes you want to blast your speakers off and party all night. Produced by DJ Khalil and featuring two legendary rappers, the song doesn’t need any explaining. It’s a must-listen track and one of my favorites.

3. Martians Vs Goblins (ft. Tyler, The Creator & Lil Wayne) is a weird and crazy track in which it seems like the rappers are just having fun, spitting what they want, taking shots at people as well as on each other. For instance, Tyler, The Creator sends a shot to Chris Brown, “Now my future’s brighter than Christopher’s new haircut“. He also nudges GameAnd that shit was expected like Jayceon whenever he name drops” to which Game replies, “F**k you, Tyler“.

4. Red Nation (ft. Lil Wayne) is like an anthem tack in which Lil Wayne only provides the hook. It’s the first official single off the album and is produced by Cool & Dre. Game does his thing on the track like “N*ggas’ll trade they soul to be Drake or J. Cole / Live and die for this shit, word to Tupac Shakur’s halo“. The song sample’s Zombie Nation‘s 2000 single “Kernkraft 400“. On its release, the track generally got positive reviews, for instance, Amanda Hensel from PopCrush said that the song “will get you out of your seat cheering for the rapper’s much anticipated return, but we could see the second single coming in strong.” The song debuted at 62  on the Billboard Hot 100 and made strong ground for the album release.

5. Pot Of Gold (ft. Chris Brown) is the second single off the album and was a great success. Even though Game didn’t personally like the track but it got positive response from the critics on its release. Scott Shetler of PopCrush said that it’s “A sensitive, introspective message from Game” and “Instead, simple guitar strumming and a gentle beat carry the song, making it a likely candidate to cross over and connect with pop audiences“. Dean Silfen of AOL Radio also gave the song a positive review, saying “The chemistry between Brown and Game make this track a true hit. Brown plays the sentimental one, making the listener sympathize with the song’s message, while Game gives the song its street sensibility“. The song samples Guster‘s 1997 song “Rocketship” and is produced by The Futuristics.

These are some of my personal favorites but there are a lot more good tracks on the album like “Good Girls Go Bad (ft. Drake)“, “Ricky“, “All I Know (ft. Lu Breeze)” and more. Overall, The R.E.D. Album is the last album off Interscope and from what I think, a great comeback for the rapper. About three years of work, putting together all sorts of material, this CD is worth buying.
