  • Leaked Images of Next-Gen iPhone Parts Confirm Relocated Flash?

Boy, these iPhone 5 rumors just keep on comin’. This time around Apple pro has posted some supposed images of the the next gen iPhone parts, specifically the camera modules. The noticable difference is that the iPhone 5 rear camera module is lacking the flash and the component which blocks Camera/Flash interference. This seems to line up with the earlier rumor that the iPhone 5 will have a relocated flash, away from the camera unit on top-right of the rear.

  • Apple Rumored To Use Curved Glass For The iPhone 5 | iPhone 4S

Another iPhone rumor for you folks, looks like Apple might be planning to use curved glass in the iPhone 5/4S similar to the one used in the Samsung Nexus S and Dell Venue Pro.

Apple has reportedly purchase more than 200 glass cutting machines since the direct purchase of curved glass would highly increase capital costs. The machines are currently stored in Apple assembly plants and will be moved as soon the yeild for curved glass rises. Apple is currently in talks with suppliers regarding cover glass, glass cutting, lamination and touch sensors to improve yields.

  • Apple files patent for biometric security

Biometric security is not a new concept. It has been used in business class laptops for a very long time, and we even saw Motorola give it a go on their first Atrix smartphone. Fingerprint security is not commonly found on Apple hardware that usually prides itself on minimalistic designs. But this new patent filing from Apple might be an indication of a change to come.

bio 376x480 Apple files patent for biometric security

Without going into too much technical detail, the patent is essentially a hardware window that can be transparent or opaque. In its transparency mode it can be image capture device, a strobe flash, a biometric sensor, a light sensor, a proximity sensor, or a solar panel, or a combination thereof. All these as methods of unlocking the phone. The patent also includes information about face recognition and eye recognition technology for unlocking the device as well as when doing online transactions.

The patent is quite new and is not yet official yet. When we will be able to see this technology in an actual Apple device is anyone’s guess. Many a times patents remain patents and never make it to end hardware. Biometric security for online shopping is certainly a novel idea and something we can’t wait to see in a phone or tablet.

  • Apple’s mobile market share stands at 5.5% in Q3 2012

The smartphone market is an extremely competitive market. Many different manufacturers fighting to take their shares of the market and profits. In order for them to achieve this they need to come up with new products all the time to keep customer interest and keep competition in check. Apple is one such company. Apple’s mobile market share has always been somewhere in the top 3. Figures just released by Gatrner enforce that fact.

The above table shows figures from this quarter. Apple’s mobile market share currently stands at 5.5%. Compared to same time last year it’s a growth from 3.9%. Sales increased from 17 million to 23 million. Apple’s mobile market share is still a distant third to Nokia and Samsung which stand at 19.2% and 22.9% respectively. Samsung even managed to sell nearly a 100 million phones. Nokia managed 82 million. It’s however important to note that most of these high sales figures come from cheap feature phones in developing markets. Apple’s iPhone isn’t exactly cheap and neither is it part of many developing markets. Apple’s iOS accounted for 13.9 percent of the smartphone operating system market share

Worldwide sales of mobile phones to end users reached almost 428 million units in the third quarter of 2012. overall mobile phone sales were down 3.1%, smartphone sales were up 47% year over year.

  • Google preparing Google Maps app for iOS

When Scott Forstall demoed iOS 6 way back in June, he showcased the new Apple Maps as the single biggest addition to iOS’s latest iteration. Backed by TomTom and with novelty features like 3D, Apple’s hopes were to replace the existing Google Maps with a better alternate. We all know how badly it eventually turned to be. So much so that it cost Scott Forstall his job. The hopes of iOS users are for a Google Maps app for iOS. We’ve heard rumours about this much awaited app before but nothing concrete.

Wall Street Journal reports that Google is currently working on a Google maps app for iOS and that the company has distributed a test version of this app to some people outside the company. Google is currently putting on the finishing touches on this before they put it on iTunes for approval. When that will happen is unclear at this point though previous speculations pointed towards a December release.

What’s even more important is whether Apple will approve this app or not. Google Maps app for iOS will compete directly with the built in Apple Maps, and we all know how Apple feels about apps replicating built in functionality. As an iOS user, fingers crossed.
