  • Final Fantasy VII Developer Discussion With Nomura, Nojima And Kitase

Famitsu as part of the Final Fantasy VII 15th anniversary feature interviewed Tetsuya Nomura, Kazushige Nojima and Yoshinori Kitase. Following are some interesting tidbits from the interview.

Kitase wanted the game to be in 3D but Sprite based models proved to be more popular against their polygon counterparts. They chose to go ahead with 3D models as they helped express characters better on screen. Popular horror game – Alone in the Dark was a huge inspiration in development.

Hironobu Sakaguchi wanted normal models in battle and SD-Style models in the field to better show character expression. Sakaguchi also helped out with the battle system and is also credited for coming up with the Materia system. On the other hand character designer Tetsuya Nomura helped shape up the Limit system.

Kazushige Nojima joined the team early in the game’s development cycle when the main character settings were being done as he was busy working on Bahamut Lagoon.

Kitase and Nomura re-did the whole plot when Kitase was handed development on the game. Tifa wasn’t in the game at first but was added later. Nomura was the one who wanted either Aerith or Tifa to die, little did they know that this would become one of the saddest plot twists in video game history.

Zack was added at the end of development as the developers wanted to show off a true soldier and Aerith’s first love. Sephiroth was initially planned to be Aerith’s brother, explaining the similar front hair, they later changed it to him being her first lover but at the end of development it Zack got to have all the fun.

Lastly Cloud’s hair was slicked back at first to reduce polygon count along with Aerith’s one piece dress.
