  • Google Play now has 700K apps available for download

Google has announced that there are 700,000 apps available for download at its Google Play app marketplace for Android devices. All these apps are available for smartphones as well as tablets that are running Google’s mobile operating system i.e Android.

The number Google has announced for its Google Play store is huge and closely matches Apple’s iTunes App Store which is the largest App Store of the world. Apple recently announced that there are 700,000+ apps available in its App Store for iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches. Although Apple has announced that there are over 275,000 tablet optimized apps available in its App Store, Google has always avoided providing tablet specific numbers publicly.

The news of 700,000 apps becoming available for download in Google Play Store is good for Google, developers, and more importantly Android users who have a wide range of apps available for their platform of choice – for almost everything. Google recently announced new products including Nexus 10 and Nexus 4 that are both highly capable and developer devices, and will definitely bring more interest in app developers worldwide for the Google Play marketplace. Google recently extended the seller feature of Google Play to India, that will also have a positive affect on app numbers soon.

  • Retailer starts selling 32GB Nexus 7 for $249, 16GB model slides to $199

Google’s plan of announcing the 32GB Nexus 7 along with the new Nexus 10 tablet and LG Nexus 4 smartphone was ruined when the warning for the Hurrican Sandy was issued. The company cancelled the highly anticipated Android event and is yet to announce a new date for the event.

The new upgraded model 32GB Nexus 7 was expected to get announced on October 29th and go on sale right after the event, but things didn’t went according to the plan. Although Google has not made the official announcement yet, at least one retailer in the US has started selling the new 32GB Nexus 7 model and it is now available for purchase on its stores. As reported by Droid-Life, the 32GB model is on sale at Office Depot at a price of $249, while the 16GB Nexus 7 that was selling for $249 perviously is now available for $199. Just like the Google Play store, the 8GB model that used to sell for $199 is no longer available for purchase at this retailer.

The 32GB Nexus 7 is on display at Office Depot stores and several users have confirmed that they have been able to buy this new model, that Google has yet to announce officially. While only Office Depot is reportedly selling the new model of Nexus 7, we expect others who have it in stock will follow the trend sooner or later, with or without Google’s announcement.

Good news Indian developers, Google has just announced that it is extending the Google Play seller support to India. Now Android developers who live in India can now sell their paid applications in one of the largest app markets of the world and earn profit of their content. This is the second major update Google has released today for its Google Play Store. First was the inclusion of the Wishlist feature.

Not only Indian developers can sell their apps on Google Play now but they can also earn money through in-app purchases feature of Google Play by offering upgrades in their applications. Google has not only extended seller support to India for Google Play developers but has also updated the store, which will now show app prices in Indian Rupees instead of USD.

While announcing this news Google also shared on its Android Developers Blog that Android activations in India have jumped over 400% over the past year. In the last six months Indian Android users have downloaded more apps than they did in previous three years combined. This signifies the importance of Indian and other Asian markets not only for Google but for all other companies who are deliberately ignoring such opportunities.

Now Google Play seller support is available to Android developers of 32 countries including around the world including India.

  • FTC could bring an antitrust case against Google for using its search to hurt rivals

According to a report by Reuters Google could face an antitrust case from FTC for using its popular Google search engine to hurt rivals. Reuters reports that four out of five commissioners who were investigating this case for over a year are convinced that Google used search as a tool to promote its own products and hurt its competition while only one commissioner is skeptical and is thinking in favor of the search giant.

The report also mentions that a long list of companies had filed complains to FTC asking it to crack down on Google. Some of these companies might include Yelp and Nextag, who have already complained about Google’s actions during open hearings in the Congress. The business owners of different genres that include travel, shopping, and entertainment blame Google of downranking their results in search in favor of its own online services.

Google has always denied the allegations of it manipulating search results in favor of its own products. Company’s chairman Eric Schmidt once said about these allegations on Google ”May I simply say that I can assure you we’ve not cooked anything,”

  • Samsung to release a 10-inch Nexus tablet in the first half of next year

If you were planning of buying a 10-inch Nexus tablet from Google and Samsung you will have to wait for a few months. CNET reports that Samsung is going to release a new 10-inch Nexus tablet that will be co-branded with Google. This new tablet is said to hit the shelves in the first half of the year 2013. The 10-inch Nexus tablet will feature a ground breaking display that will be even better than iPad 3′s Retina Display and pack more pixels in one place.

According to CNET’s report the new 10-inch Nexus tablet will have a whooping resolution of  2560×1600 pixels. For sake of comparison iPad 3 features 2048×1536 pixel density while the new Macbook Pro that Apple is expected to announce soon with a 13-inch Retina display will feature similar number of pixels on a larger area.

The awesomeness of the new display will come at a price though, as manufacturing such a display will be an uphill task and will definitely push the display-manufacturing tech envelope.

If this report by CNET turns out to be true then we will have a 10-inch Nexus tablet with a better screen to compete with Apple iPad 4th generation that the company is expected to announce in the months between February and April according to Apple’s previous release pattern for iPad releases.
