  • iOS 7 to include built-in cellular data monitor

Looks like the recently announced iOS 7 will be getting a feature Android users have had for quite a while now, of course I’m talking about a cellular data monitor which was announced in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich if I remember correctly.

iOS 7 which Apple tout to be the ‘biggest change since the introduction of the iPhone’ is true to quite some extent as it introduces a radical new change with a slurry of new features. iOS 7 was revealed at the yearly WWDC conference just a few weeks ago to a mixed response, fans who’ve been used to the static iOS design feared the aesthetic changes would iOS for the worse but I personally believe it’s a much needed refresher.

The built-in data monitor will allow users to find out exactly how much data a specific app is consuming, thanks to this users should be able to save quite the pocket change on their data plans.

What do you think of the feature? Let us know in the comments below.

  • WordPress Rolls Out The Big “3.3″ – New Features Are Exciting

I just love big updates, especially one that’s been under wraps for quite some time. WordPress just released their latest final version of “3.3″ which they call “Sonny”. Sonny Stitt was one of the big jazz saxophonists who this software is named after, as always WordPress keeps it creative. The new update changes the entire admin panel and makes it more sleek and user-friendly. Read on for the details.

    Admin Panel Awesomeness

This time around, the admin panel is super-responsive and has been made smaller to fit in smaller screens. The amazing quick response time enables faster blogging and lesser hassles.

    Handle Your Media, Faster

The new media bar is just one upload button rather than being divided into types like they used to. This one media uploader also has drag and drop features. The new media uploader now makes it easier to upload different types of files at once, it recognizes file formats on its own without the user having to input anything. The new upload bar is also more sleek and next-gen, which is what I like to see in my updates personally. The drag-and-drop enabled media bar is powered by Plupload.

Sync Up With Your Team Mates

Do you remember when you used to edit a certain post and another one of your site’s member was working on it, a very creepy message used to show warning you of making any changes to it. Well this time, Co-Editing has been introduced. When you’re bringing about any changes to any post which is being worked on by two or more editors, the warning message will only show when the post is being edited by the other party online and not just saved as a draft like it used to.

  • Windows 8 passes 100 million license sales

Finally, the radio silence of Microsoft over the sales of windows 8 licenses is over and the company has announced that it has sold over 100 million windows 8 licenses since 60 million license sales till January this year. The company has been quite careful before disclosing the sales of its product license during the recent quarter.

The figures are quite similar to windows 7 sales which reached 100 million license sales in April, 2010. The major challenge for Microsoft at this stage relies on touch based windows machines as windows 8 encourages usage on these devices. Although these devices are yet to make an impact in consumer market yet it could prove to be decisive for windows 8 success in near future depending on the sales on touch based windows devices.

Microsoft windows CFO Tami Reller mentioned that the company is not satisfied with the overall level of sales in touch based device market which was the prime focus of Windows 8 pre-launch. Microsoft expects some improvement in sales during the summer season due to increasing atom based tablet market. Microsoft is also planning to launch its new version of windows 8 i.e. windows 8.1 with improvements for non touch laptop and desktop users.

  • HTC HD2 gets Jelly Bean port

Mankind has, since the dawn of time, been in search for the elixir of life. Immortality. Sounds like an old house wife’s tale. But if you think in terms of smartphones, the elixir of life exists, and it’s in the HTC HD2, a phone that refuses to die. Originally a Windows Mobile smartphone, HD2 has gotten every major Android update, and even updates for other platforms.

And now it’s gotten an update that even the most expensive Android phones have not. We’re talking Android 4.1, aka Jelly Bean. Yes, the same update that Galaxy SIII or One X don’t have. HD2 does. How’s that for an invulnerable smartphone? Of course the phone is nearly 4 years old, runs anemic hardware by today’s standards so even the most perfect of ports will still struggle to work without hitches.

This particular port is still in Alpha phase, pre-alpha to be precise. So it’s even less stable than what an alpha update will be.

    What’s currently working:

    • Mobile Data 3G/2G
    • Calls
    • WiFi
    • Bluetooth
    • SMS
    • Sound check download page for fix
    • Video Playback
    • USB Mass Storage

    What’s not working:

    • Camera
    • Browser works but display is messed up.
    • Error when Installing some Apps
    • Google Now crashes.

So there you have it. The developer clearly states it’s not a working release, but more of a proof of concept. Still, the usual day to day functionality is intact. You get your mobile data, calls and Wifi so basic stuff is covered. I don’t think it’ll take long before a proper port is available.

If you’re feeling adventurous, head over to the XDA thread for more information.

  • ZodTTD Makes PSX4Droid Free!

Today through his blog Android and Apple homebrew developer ZodTTD has made his PS1 emulator the PSX4Droid free and available with install instructions through his blog. He claims that after removing his app from the Android Market Google also froze his developer accounts meaning Google refused to pay him his money. We couldn’t confirm this claim yet but if you wanted to test out the app be our guest, just make sure you have a spare PS1 bios and some LEGALLY obtained roms laying. We here at TechDeville prefer using FPSE which is much faster and superior to PSX4Droid and still available on the Android Market.

  • HTC and Apple settle patent dispute

Apple might have had its differences with Samsung, but earlier this year they went face to face with HTC as well. Apple naturally claimed HTC infringed on some patents in their latest Evo and One line up of smartphones. Apple even managed to take them off of American shelves for quite some time. HTC incurred heavy losses because of this.

Today in a surprising development, HTC announced that they have settled all pending legal disputes with Apple. Unlike previous cases, this agreement is a global settlement. It dismisses all cases HTC and Apple had against each other under a 10 year license agreement which covers current and future patents held by each company. The terms of agreement are kept in secrecy, but according to HTC it won’t cost them too much money. This settlement now allows HTC to use features such as slide to unlock or universal search in their phones.

Peter Chou says that “HTC is pleased to have resolved its dispute with Apple, so HTC can focus on innovation instead of litigation.” Apple CEO Tim Cook says ”we are glad to have reached a settlement with HTC,” and that “we will continue to stay laser focused on product innovation.”

Now if Apple can be this nice to Samsung, the  tech world would be a much better place.

  • Apple to get $8 per phone in HTC settlement

Yesterday we learnt that HTC and Apple have come to some sort of agreement with regards to their patents. This is especially surprising considering how Apple would not do the same with Samsung. The HTC settlement included a 10-year license agreement that allows HTC to use previously Apple-patented software features. This includes the notorious slide to unlock.

Of course nothing is free in this world. The HTC settlement clearly gives HTC a breathing air. But what does it give Apple? According to Analyst Shaw Wu with Sterne Agee, Apple is likely to get around $6-8 as licensing fee. HTC is expected to sell around 30 million smartphones in 2013 which means this HTC settlement will earn Apple close to $180 million. HTC is already paying Microsoft $15 per every Android smartphone sold for another licensing agreement.

With this matter settled, it will be interesting to see how Apple pursues its case against Samsung and Motorola. $8 per handset isn’t going to net Apple a lot in cash considering it has over a $100 billion in the kitty currently. With bigger fish like Samsung and Motorola, Apple will most probably look to get a much more sizeable amount per handset. That is of course if we ever reach an agreement stage.
