Rockstar Games plans to launch Grand Theft Auto 6 on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Reports place the next game in Vice City and its surrounding regions, with a playable area said to be twice the size of Grand Theft Auto 5‘s map.
VGC reports that the new game’s traversable territory could also reach three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. The comparison covers playable spaces, rather than the full technical boundaries that may exist beyond a game’s accessible world.
Rockstar is aiming for a denser Vice City
The reported world scale comes with a sharp increase in animation work. Grand Theft Auto 6 reportedly contains more than 600,000 animations, compared with roughly 55,000 in Grand Theft Auto 5 and about 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Rockstar North head Aaron Garbut described environmental detail that reaches inside rooms and across individual characters. That includes occupants, objects, images on walls, tattoos and family photographs. The details draw on interviews with Rockstar developers.
Reports also put a main-story playthrough at about 80 hours. The game may bring back the series’ six-star wanted-level system, giving police escalation another level beyond GTA 5’s five stars. Players will reportedly also be able to pet a dog.
The scale sets a high bar for the series’ Miami return
Vice City serves as Rockstar’s fictionalized version of Miami, and the setting carries a long history in the GTA series. A playable area twice the size of GTA 5’s would make this return far larger than the 2002 Vice City game, while the animation count suggests Rockstar wants each location to hold more visible activity than its earlier worlds.
That matters because Red Dead Redemption 2 already set a high standard for Rockstar’s detailed open environments, despite its smaller reported animation total. Players will judge the new release on whether its larger setting maintains that level of character and environmental detail across Vice City and the surrounding regions.
Rockstar has not published exact map-area measurements. The available reports also do not establish whether every cited feature and figure will appear in the final launch version, and they do not explain how the roughly 80-hour story estimate was calculated.
