New iPad Announced With Retina Display, LTE, A5X Processor And iSight Camera

The new iPad is here and boy is it a worthwhile upgrade. Apple CEO Tim Cooks announced their latest tablet at a media event held in Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco today.

The upgrade is a major one, not like the iPhone 4S. Highlight of the new iPad is the screen, it runs at an eye popping 2048 x 1536 resolution which is the highest seen in a 9.7 inch form factor, heck proper laptops have much lesser pixels on their screens. The screen measures into at 264ppi which makes it a Retina Display. The screen also offers better color saturation so everything will look much more sharper. But wait, that’s not all, the iPad will be powered by a much faster A5X processor which offers four times the performance of Tegra 3 according to Apple – check mate eh NVIDIA?

Apple has also added a brand new iSight camera to the iPad which is based on the same technology as the iPhone 4S’ brilliant 8MP shooter, the only difference being that the iPad’s is at a slightly lower 5MP resolution. The camera also records video in 1080p just like the iPhone 4S camera.

There are also some software improvements like the addition of a dictation button on the keyboard which allows you to speak messages instead of typing them, a bit like what we have on Android. The iPad will now also support WiFi hotspots, as long as the carrier you are on allows it.

Lastly the new iPad will support 4G LTE, both the AT&T and Verizon variants but you will have to buy a different model for either one as they run on different bands, but alas both the variants will support global 3G connectivity. Outside the US Apple is partnering with Bell, Telus and Rogers for LTE connectivity. The new iPad is a tad bit heavier than the iPad 2 at 1.4lbs but surprisingly offers the same 10 hour battery life with LTE. It’s also a bit thicker at 9.4mm.

The iPad is available for pre-order today and will be hitting stores on the 16th of March in the US and more than a 100 countries on the 23rd. Pricing are as follows:

iPad 16GB – $499

iPad 32GB – $599

iPad 64GB – $699

iPad 16GB LTE – $629

iPad 32GB LTE – $729

iPad 64GB LTE – $829

We’re not sure what the new iPad is called yet but we’ll keep you posted.
