  • HTC Sensation XL Review

The HTC Sensation is part of HTC’s first wave of Beats powered Android smartphones to hit the market. Packing specs similar to the WP7 powered HTC Titan – the HTC Sensation XL is a phone primarily focused on the audiophile crowd. Packing a 4.7-inch display with a 800 x 480 resolution and a single core 1.5GHz processor – the HTC Sensation is no slouch but how does it perform in real life? Lets find out in our review below.

    Unboxing

    Box

HTC Sensation XL 02 HTC Sensation XL Review

The HTC Sensation unlike the Galaxy Note comes in quite a big box like most of the previous HTC smartphones we’ve review previously. The packaging is standard HTC, you slide off the top cover which reveals the box. Opening the box presents you with the phone and iBeats earphones packed inside a tray, removing which allows you to access the charger and USB cable along with the standard booklets and warranty information on the bottom of the box. The aforementioned iBeats earphones are the same as packaged with the recently reviewed Sensation XE and come with a nice pouch and multiple sized tips. There’s also an XL limited edition package available in selected shops for a limited period of time which replace the iBeats earphones with the Beats Solo headphones for the same price.

    Specifications

    • Quad-band GSM and dual-band 3G support
    • 14.4 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA
    • 4.7″ 16M-color capacitive S-LCD touchscreen running at WVGA resolution (480 x 800 pixels)
    • Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread with HTC Sense 3.5 UI
    • 1.5 GHz single Scorpion CPU with Adreno 205 GPU onboard Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 chipset
    • 768 MB of RAM with 16 GB of onboard storage
    • 8 MP autofocus camera with dual-LED flash; face detection, geotagging, HDR mode, image autoupload and a 1.3MP front facing camera
    • 720p video recording @ 30fps, slo-mo videos (2x at WVGA)
    • Wi-Fi b/g/n and DLNA
    • GPS with A-GPS
    • Stereo FM radio with RDS
    • Accelerometer, proximity and ambient light sensor
    • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
    • microUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth v3.0

    Hardware

HTC Sensation XL 05 HTC Sensation XL Review

The HTC Sensation XL is meant for the mid range market so don’t expect any crazy hardware. The XL supports all four bands of GSM and both 3G bands, it’s unfortunately not available in CDMA as of writing. It supports HSPDA and HSUPA for blazing fast connectivity as long as your carrier has the service available. The 4.7-inch S-LCD display is very good for watching movies, playing games, web browsing and reading books but the low WVGA resolution might be annoying for a few people. Like the previously reviewed HTC Sensation XE, the Sensation XL too suffers from some ghosting but you can only notice it on black backgrounds. The screen’s resolution is pretty low for the screen equaling to just 199ppi, text is pretty much impossible to read if you zoom all the way out which totally nullifies the main advantage of having the bigger screen size. A 720p resolution on the XL would have been amazing.

HTC Sensation XL 17 HTC Sensation XL Review

The Sensation XL runs on a pretty fast 1.5GHz Scorpion processor which offers very good performance and makes you never feel the need of a dual core. The Adreno 205 GPU is not fast as the Galaxy S II’s Mali or NVIDIA’s Tegra series but it gets the job done. There’s a total of 768MB of RAM on the XL which is pretty standard for HTC phones, we would have preferred 1GB instead to help cope with the heavy skin that is HTC Sense but 768MB gets the job done and won’t bug you much unless you multitask more than 10 apps at a time.

HTC Sensation XL 13 HTC Sensation XL Review

The camera on the XL is an 8MP shooter which takes excellent pictures and records in 720p resolution at 30 frames per second. You have to hand it to HTC, they’ve really improved their cameras over the years. Video quality is pretty good but the Mic is of bad quality due to which the sound crackles a lot. There’s also a front facing 1.3MP camera for video calls and self shots.

HTC Sensation XL 11 HTC Sensation XL Review

Other standard components include WiFi b/g/n, GPS, FM Radio, Accelerometer, proximity and ambient light sensors, a standard 3.5mm audio jack, microUSB port for charging and data transfer along with Bluetooth 3.0.

    Design

First time holding the HTC Sensation was kind of awkward, it looked huge in press photos just like the Titan but in real life it’s not much bigger than a standard 4.3-inch smartphone. Measuring in at 132.5 x 70.7 x 9.9 mm the Sensation XL is just slightly bigger than a Galaxy S II. Weighing in at 162.5g, it’s kind of heavy but with the extra weight comes the sturdy aluminum build. So in short, don’t be worried by XL tag that comes with the phone as it’s size is pretty average at best.

HTC Sensation XL 14 HTC Sensation XL Review

The HTC Sensation XL is a noticeably cleaner phone as compared to the Sensation XE which is made of a mix of materials. The aluminum build of the back which wraps around the phone gives the Sensation XL a very premium finish. Front of the phone houses the screen in the middle, the four capacitive buttons on the bottom and the 1.3MP front facing camera, proximity and ambient sensors along with a notification LED on the top. Right side of the XL houses volume rocker while the left side holds just the microUSB connector, unfortunately there is no dedicated camera button to compliment the excellent 8MP shooter on the back.

HTC Sensation XL 16 HTC Sensation XL Review

Top of the Sensation XL houses the 3.5mm headphone jack, power button and a secondary microphone for noise cancellation which works brilliantly. Bottom of the phone houses the primary microphone and the back cover latch. Back of the phone houses the 8MP camera with dual LED flash and a loudspeaker. The back cover wraps around the phone just like the Sensation XE, there are ribs on the back of the cover to ensure there’s no space between the phone’s internals and the aforementioned cover. The plastic bottom houses the wireless antennas which are suppose to reduce the widespread deathgrip issue present in the iPhone 4 and recent HTC handsets including the Sensation and Sensation XE (not to the same extent though).

HTC Sensation XL 08 HTC Sensation XL Review

The battery included with the Sensation XL is a 1600 mAh unit which is smaller than the XE’s 1730 mAh battery but the latter powers a dual core processor as compared to the XL’s single core. The battery lasted us just over 1.5 days with average use and almost a day with heavy usage which is pretty decent for a phone with a 4.7-inch screen.

HTC Sensation XL 09 HTC Sensation XL Review

    Software

The HTC Sensation XL comes with Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread with HTC’s Sense 3.5 UI on top which is a big improvement over Sense 3.0. In case you didn’t know the original Sensation came with Sense 3.0 and suffered major performance issues, users were forced to install ROMs with either the older Sense UI or without Sense altogether for a more stock look. Overall we’re very much satisfied with Sense 3.5 and can’t wait to see what Sense 4.0 on ICS has in store for us.

    Camera Samples

    Overall

The HTC Sensation XL is a great Android handset, packing great multimedia capabilities thanks to it’s 4.7-inch S-LCD display and included iBeats earphones. The low resolution of the screen and just 16GB of onboard memory with no way to expand the storage kind of disappoints but alas the overall package is great.

  • My Opinion on Windows 8

Windows 8 consumer preview got released a couple of days ago and here I am with my impressions.

    Windows 95 – Bad

    Windows 98 – Good

    Windows Me – Bad

    Windows XP – Good

    Windows Vista – Bad

    Windows 7 – Good

Windows 8 – (Are you getting my point yet?)

Well, it’s not necessary that Windows 8 should be crap. Maybe Microsoft has finally learned. Or maybe this new operating system will provide a good joke to Mr. Jobs who is resting somewhere above.

Anyway, I used Windows 8 at a friend’s place and here I am to share my experience with you.

Let us start with the Start menu. This is no longer that rectangular/circular icon you see at the bottom left of your screen. Instead, it is now a whole screen with rectangular/square icons. This is the screen that you are welcomed with when you first start up the operating system. These icons on the start page take you to their respective applications when you click on them. Take the weather app for example; this is no longer the small widget that you had on your desktop in Vista or 7. It is a whole app now. Although I did not confirm this, I am pretty sure there will also be a weather widget as in the previous two Windows.

So, this weather app basically shows you the weather forecast (obviously). Similarly, other applications such as Calendar and Finance give you the updates you need. While using these apps, you will notice that there are bars here for scrolling. And they’re somehow… poorly designed. What I mean by this is that when you move your mouse wheel, both the vertical and horizontal bars will begin to move. At first I thought there was something wrong with the wheel itself, or maybe I was doing something wrong, but it turned out to be a genuine issue. No matter, since this is only the consumer preview, there are bound to be some problems.

Moving on, you can now buy applications from the Microsoft store. Once you purchase an app, it will be shown on the start page. Just like in Apple’s iOS, the purchasing and removal of applications is very simple. All this can be done in a few clicks. Thank you Microsoft for making some things simple. No more hassle with the Control Panel!

However, this menu looks like it should be used on Tablets, and not PCs. It felt very awkward and wrong to be using these applications by a mouse. It would be better to use it via touch.

    windows8cp 616 My Opinion on Windows 8

Through the start page, you can go to your desktop, which looks completely like a Windows 7 desktop, but without a start button. However, by clicking the bottom left part of the screen, you can open up the start page. Hence, I do not see a point in removing the sleek looking icon which has been a symbol of Windows for a very long time. Almost all the icons on the desktop and the taskbar are exactly as they were in Windows 7, which is pretty upsetting since I was expecting a new look for the icons. Even minor changes would have sufficed.

Moving on to my favourite part: file managing. Copying files looks cooler, and is more efficient than before. I copied 2 files from one hard drive to another, and it displayed the speed with the use of a graph to show how fast the copying was being done. Furthermore, I was able to pause the copying of one file, to make the other one go faster. This was a great idea and is very useful for those who copy multiple files at once, but would like to give particular files more priority. I’m sure all of us have faced this dilemma before.

windows 8 desktop My Opinion on Windows 8

Now, you can even view the actions that are available for the files (Copy, paste etc.) on top of the explorer. This is congruous to the layout of Microsoft Office 2007 onwards. Although it is helpful, I don’t understand why they had to make it look like we’re using Office. Those of you who find this annoying, and know the short cuts for such tools can easily close the bar at will.

And finally, the best thing about Windows 8… is the revival of the ‘back’ button! Yes folks, that valuable button is back. For those who do not know what this button is: It takes you back to the mother folder of the folder that you’re viewing. This seems insignificant as I write about it, but we all know how important that button is.

One other thing worth mentioning is the task manager which is now, for some, simpler to use. Details can be hidden to avoid confusion, and tasks can be carried out just as before. Also, now you can select which programs to open at start-up, instead of searching for this option at the Control Panel.

Overall, I think Windows 8 is an improvement, but Microsoft made a few silly mistakes that may cause some users to avoid upgrading, such as the removal of the start button that we have all come to know and love.

If you have used Windows 8, what do you think about it? Will you be upgrading? Let me know in the comments below.

  • 10 Biggest Reasons Why Your Computer Is Slow

Looking at some of the infographics of this year, it came to my attention that most people still don’t understand how to keep their computers in top shape. It’s not always about the hardware, it’s how people use their computers and understand what harms it in the long run. Here is a list of the ten most common reason why your computer might act slow:

    1. Ever Heard Of Defragmenting?

Perhaps you’ve had the computer for quite a while now (a year or so) and you still haven’t tried defragmenting the hard disks. You don’t need to install any third-party software or fancy defrag tools to do so, the Windows Defragmentation Tool is the best there is. Try it, it’s going to take a while but it’ll make sure your computer can easily identify the files it needs to read from. Defragmentation basically reorganizes your files, think of it this way, you have an office with a lot of folders which are not organized according to letters or numbers, it’ll take you a while to find every single file, you need to do some sorting out in order to get them faster, that’s what defragmentation is for a computer. DO IT!

    2. Too Afraid To Use An Antivirus

Please understand that at today’s day and age, no computer is safe from the “Evil clutches” of the hackers. Install a good antivirus program to make sure your computer is protected, but DON’T OVERDO IT. Install one of the recommended programs and you’ll be alright.

    3. Too Many Icons, Not Pretty Bro

It always starts with one desktop shortcut which slowly becomes the motherload of all shortcuts. The lesser icons you have in your desktop the better, delete all unnecessary icons ASAP.

    4. Installed Every Software Known To Man

This has been a personal experience of mine when I turned on a friend’s computer to find a slew of useless software installed all over that poor helpless computer. Only install programs that you will DEFINITIVELY use! Have some mercy on yours RAMs.

    5. No Idea What Windows Update Is

Most people avoid updating Windows, I agree with them to a certain extent. I don’t update Windows fully, because I don’t NEED every single Windows software to be updated, I only make sure the critical updates and the security patches are always installed as soon as they are released, DO THAT!

    6. Mediocre PC, Heavy Games

Some people still try playing the next-gen games on their old-arse computers. It won’t work, buy a souped up PC that matches the requirements of the new games or buy a console if money is an issue.

    7. Not Aware Of Bad Websites

Yes, bad websites do exist – a LOT of ‘em too. Make sure your browser and antivirus are fully updated and avoid visiting the obviously malicious websites.

    8. Never Used Scandisk Before

Scandisk or “chkdsk” is a Windows utility which is vital to keep your disks safe and healthy. If your PC has ever been abruptly shut down due to power outage or otherwise, be sure to perform Scandisk on all of your partitions.

    9. Torrents

This is actually one of the most increasing causes of PC threats and infections. Most people aren’t aware of how safe a torrent is and continue downloading it, not aware that the 900 mb file they just downloaded is actually a virus. Avoid downloading obviously malicious looking torrents.

    10. YOUR FRIEND’S USB IS YOUR WORST ENEMY!

NEVER, and I mean NEVER, take your friend’s USB and use it before properly scanning it. 99% of the time, they’re infected and will leave the infamous “AUTORUN.INF” in your computer.

So there you have it folks. Share your worst experience below. To make your PC stronger, follow a little guide I wrote a few months ago here. If you liked the article, share it. Peace.

  • Antivirus Review: BullGuard 12 – Your Personal Cyber K9

    • Performance
    • Detection Rate
    • Interface
    • Ease Of Use
    • Learning Curve

The PC Security World has evolved greatly. From there being just two of the majors, Norton and Mcafee, to an endless list of great products one after the other. Among the many awesome newcomers, we are reviewing one called BullGuard. As the name suggests, BullGuard is a take on your cyber K9 companion, we used this software on both new and old systems to see the amount of RAM it used and the number of threats it caught, to our surprise this is a pretty good piece of software. Not only does it provide protection, it has some fancy tune-up features as well as a backup hard drive in the cloud for every user! Sweet ain’t it? Read on.

It All Starts With A Shiny Interface

TechDeville.com Interface 720x353 Antivirus Review: BullGuard 12 Your Personal Cyber K9

BullGuard sports a very minimalist and sleek interface. Very easy on the eyes, a combination of hot-red with silver, it is a very compact product with all of the main features easily accessible right from the main panel. It doesn’t add any extra load to the RAM or processing speeds either.

    Under The Hood

TechDeville CP 720x353 Antivirus Review: BullGuard 12 Your Personal Cyber K9

The main control panel of BullGuard is not complicated either, bringing all of the main settings on the front for users to see and change. Everything is controlled by the user, you don’t have to waste hours finding the firewall to enable access to your favorite program.

    Backup, You Say?

TechDeville.com Backup 720x352 Antivirus Review: BullGuard 12 Your Personal Cyber K9

Yes, BullGuard comes equipped with its own cloud backup service called BullGuard Online Drive. The size of the disc varies according to the subscription, we received a 5GB backup drive with our review unit. It creates a nice little drive right in your My Computer window, observe:

A simple drag and drop system, much like DropBox. A very handy feature.

Wait, It Tunes Up My PC Too?

TechDeville.com TuneUp 720x341 Antivirus Review: BullGuard 12 Your Personal Cyber K9

BullGuard could have developed a separate program for PC Tune Up but they’re not a greedy lot. They embedded a pretty nice Pc Tune Up feature right in their security program, it takes care of the basic tune-up needs and then some!

    Safe Browsing, Enhanced

    1 11 2012 4 39 09 PM 720x444 Antivirus Review: BullGuard 12 Your Personal Cyber K9

Remember those insane Facebook spam bots? When you click on a certain link they used to spam your entire friends list with weird messages? Well this saved me. BullGuard carries a fully loaded website blocker which integrates itself seamlessly to every browser, even a hint of an online trojan makes it block the website from opening, if you’re sure of the site being clean it still gives you the option of opening it. The online community at BullGuard is very active and keeps adding malicious websites to their database, you can help too by reporting websites.

    Safe Searching

    1 15 2012 4 34 03 PM Antivirus Review: BullGuard 12 Your Personal Cyber K9

Search your favorite search engine with ease, BullGuard provides a pre-review of every website that comes up. This feature was first introduced by McAfee as a stand-alone program.

    The Detection Rate

    12 22 2011 4 26 21 PM Antivirus Review: BullGuard 12 Your Personal Cyber K9

We performed the full-scan on one of our old computer systems, it picked up a huge number of Trojans and Spyware alike. The detection rate is immense and the full-scan took a total of 2 hours on a Pentium 4 PC with 160 GB of scanned data.

    That Reassuring Green Tick

TechDeville.com Green 720x353 Antivirus Review: BullGuard 12 Your Personal Cyber K9

What does every computer user need at the end of the day from their security system? That reassuring green tick of safety and protection that tells us our computer is healthy and well. A little love doesn’t hurt. BullGuard really makes you feel you have a trusty K9 companion protecting you from harm.

Our Verdict, Is This Software For You?

We have seriously loved the inflow of awesome and minimal antivirus programs over the span of five years, BullGuard brings a few new and nice features to the table which I am sure will be followed in the 2012 versions of the other antivirus products. I am glad people are moving away from their Norton products, unless they create a less-of-a-system-hog they can’t join the league of awesome security products. BullGuard isn’t expensive, a fully loaded Antivirus license for a year is about $29, the online backup disc space is surprisingly cheap. We recommend this product as one of our favorite antivirus programs of the new year. After using it personally for three weeks, most of my review was done on a very old Pentium 4 and it did not cause any performance issues or start-up lags, I have no complaints whatsoever.

  • Black Ops 2 Tip: Select Fire Attachment

In today’s Black Ops 2 tip we’ll be covering the Select Fire attachment. The Select Fire attachment is a brand new gun attachment to Call of Duty debuting in this year’s Black Ops 2. In lay man’s terms the Select Fire attachment enables Burst and Single Fire guns to be shot Fully Auto while Full Auto guns can be shot in bursts. The attachment can be very useful with some guns while completely ruining others. This article will outline the advantages and disadvantages of using the Select Fire attachment on your guns.

To start off the Select Fire attachment is only available with SMGs and Assault Rifles so we’ll obviously be focusing on those.

The MP7, PDW, MSMC and Vector are general low recoil guns, so using Select Fire won’t be of use. The Chicom on the other hand was made for the attachment, the gun’s fire rate doesn’t decrease by a lot and the recoil pattern stays pretty good, so I certainly recommend you use it with it. The Skorpion can also benefit from a Burst Fire mode as the gun has a lot of recoil while Aiming Down Sight (ADS).

M8A1SelectFire Black Ops 2 Tip: Select Fire Attachment

In the Assault Rifle category I didn’t feel any use of the attachment on the MTAR, Type 25 and M27. The FAL OSW and SMR benefit greatly from the attachment as its easier to get kills if your aim or trigger finger is not that good. The recoil on the SMR will increase a bit along with the Fire Rate on both these guns being slowed down a notch. With the AN94 I would recommend you learn to control the bursts as the gun fires the first two bullets of each Burst faster. So if you can learn to fire it in Bursts of two , which is very easy by the way, then you don’t need to waste a point on the attachment.

For the M8AI I would recommend using it in Burst Fire as its easier to fire fast on the gun by getting your timing rite to oversample the fire pattern, there is also a lot less recoil in Burst compared to Full Auto with the gun. The SCAR-H can be used effectively with Burst Fire as it greatly reduces the recoil and back to center speed on the gun. Lastly the SWAT should never be used with Select Fire as it greatly reduces the range of the weapon as seen in this video here.

  • iPhone 5 Jailbreak, Everything You Need To Know

The iPhone 5 will be delivered to customers who pre-ordered the device this Friday i.e 21st of September. These include a small but intelligent bunch of hackers dedicated to unleashing our iPhone’s potentials through a process called Jailbreaking. These Jailbreakers will supposedly start work on the iPhone 5 Jailbreak as soon as they can but accomplishing their goal wont be that easy.

    iPhone 5 Jailbreak

Two main teams have been responsible for recent jailbreaks namely the Chronic-Dev Team and iPhone Dev Teams. Although they haven’t official announced work on an iPhone 5 Jailbreak its obvious they’re planning stuff out under the radar. As we mentioned earlier the dev teams or anyone else for a matter of fact who plans on accomplishing an iPhone 5 Jailbreak, will have multiple challenges to overcome, lets discuss the two main problems below:

    iOS 6 Jailbreak

iOS 6 will be release to the public in just a few hours although previous iOS 6 Beta release have been Jailbroken on the iPhone 3G and iPhone 4. iPhone 4S is yet to be Jailbroken on iOS 6. Jailbreaks for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4S are much likely to arrive earlier than the iPhone 5 Jailbreak which comes with iOS 6 pre-installed.

    A6 Chip

Apple’s brand new A6 chip is the company’s fastest one yet, offering double the performance of the iPhone 4S’ A5. The problem with a brand new processor and internals is that it adds more complexity to the Jailbreaking process. As each component is changed, the new one needs specific instructions which older Jailbreaks aren’t able to provide. The iPhone 4S’ Jailbreak was hard enough, many members of the Jailbreak community including posixninja, pod2g, nikias and planetbeing came together and created the Jailbreak “Dream Team” to tackle the problem. They succeeded but we’re not sure if they’ll come back for the iPhone 5 Jailbreak.

Now we have no idea when and if the iPhone 5 Jailbreak will come out but we doubt that it will come out anytime in 2012. We’re already in the 9th month of the year and the iPhone 4S Jailbreak took 6 months to accomplish.

For the time being all we can do is wait.
