The Samsung Unpacked event is now over and as expected the Samsung Galaxy S III is finally official. Samsung’s latest and greatest packs some seriously hardcore features which outa’ give its competitors a run for their money.
The Galaxy S III features a Pentile 4.8-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, is powered by the Samsung made Exynos 4 Quad processor running at 1.4GHz and a new 8MP sensor with zero shutter lag like the Galaxy Nexus which Samsung claims takes very good pictures. There’s also a 1.9MP camera on the front for video chats, self shots and a few more neat features which we’ll cover in detail below. The phone will sport 1GB of RAM like its predecessor.
The Galaxy S III measures in 1236.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm (yes folks, just 8.6mm thick) and weighs 133g. The design looks like a mix between the T-Mobile Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Nexus with the build material once again being plastic. The phone will be powered by a 2100 mAh battery which should get us good battery times.
The phone will initially be available in 16GB and 32GB flavors with a 64GB version arriving later. Thankfully the Galaxy S III will feature a microSD card slot which can expand the storage even further.
Software wise the Galaxy S III runs on Android 4.0 (4.0.4 to be exact) and will run a newer version of TouchWiz on top. Along with the Galaxy S III Samsung also announced S-Voice which is Samsung’s answer to Apple’s Siri. The other new features announced were:
- Eye Tracking and Smart Stay which shuts down or turns on the screen depending on whether you’re looking at the screen or not.
- Floating videos allows you to re-size and move around videos floating on top of each other.
- Best Photo allows you to take 8 burst shots and choose the best one.
- S Beam which is a mix between Wi-Fi and NFC.
The standard stuff like Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi HT40, GPS/GLONASS and NFC are also present.
Samsung also introduced a set of accessories for the phone which include a Flip cover, Desk dock, Car dock and HDTV Adapter.
Lastly the phone also supports wireless charging which we don’t see a lot.
The Galaxy S III will launch in a total of 145 countries on 296 carriers, starting with the 3G version in Europe on May 29th while the 4G version will be coming to North America sometime “this summer.” So tell us guys, will you be getting one?
