WhatsApp is gradually distributing a stronger two-step verification option and more context on incoming calls from unfamiliar numbers. Meta’s messaging service plans the password-based protection tool for Android and iOS, while the expanded caller screen currently appears only on Google’s mobile platform.
According to reports from Android Authority and TechCrunch, the new credential can replace WhatsApp’s existing six-digit verification PIN. It may include letters, numbers and special characters, giving people more options than a numeric code alone.
Longer passwords add flexibility to account protection
The change affects the service’s optional two-step verification layer, which adds protection beyond the primary login process. A longer password with different character types can be harder to guess than a fixed six-digit PIN, depending on the password a person chooses.
That matters because the verification setting protects an account after the main sign-in step. People who use the feature will be able to choose a credential format that more closely resembles the passwords used for other online accounts, instead of relying on a short number sequence.
Android users will see more context before answering
WhatsApp is also updating its incoming-call screen for calls from unknown numbers. The Android version can show the caller’s country and identify groups that the recipient shares with that person.
Those details give recipients information to consider before they answer an unfamiliar call. A country indicator can provide geographic context, while shared groups may show why an unknown number has a connection to the recipient in the first place.
The rollout has no stated completion date, and the available reports do not identify the minimum or maximum length for the new password. Meta also has not provided a timetable for bringing the enhanced caller screen to iOS, so iPhone users will need to wait for further details on that part of the update.
