  • Gmail for iOS makes a return

    Gmail for iOS returns! An official Gmail E-Mail client was released on the App store a couple of weeks ago and was shortly removed from the store following the release due to a serious issue with the client. But the official Gmail client has made a triumphant return on the official Apple App store free of cost to any and all owning a compatible iDevice.

    gmail for ios

    The client is iOS 4 certified (No word as to whether the app will run or is stable on iOS 5 but the app does a good job of staying simple, much like Facebook it offers a slide in and slide out to the left side interface letting you choose between Inbox / Spam and other folders in your Gmail account with ease, the app is relatively simple looking and won’t turn many heads but maybe we can hope to brighten it up a bit with a future update :D .

    Google has recommended that if you are on the previous version it is highly recommended you uninstall / delete that version before signing onto this version. The App does a great job of giving you push notification and badges to let you know about any unread / new mail you may have missed and especially if you are one of those people who prefers Gmail to other Email address providers.

    The official link to the app via browser is available here

  • Samsung Galaxy S II Launching In Pakistan For Just Rs.55,000

    Android Pakistan has reported that the Samsung Galaxy S II will be releasing in Pakistan for just Rs. 55,000 ($640), which is a lot less than what was expected and what importers are charging. The site also reports that customers would get a complementary “gift” with their Galaxy S IIs, we don’t know what this gift is but our bet is on some first party accessories for the phone.

    Rumors were that Pakistan’s version will be the crippled version i.e Super LCD screen instead of a SAMOLED display and a weaker processor but be assured that the Pakistani version will be the buffed up i9100.

  • How To: Fix Error 3194 in iTunes When Restoring to Stock/Custom Firmware

    Quite a few members of the Jailbreaking community backup their SHSH blobs to Cydia’s server for downgrading purposes ever since the release of iOS 4.3.3, the people who have edited their hosts file to point to Cydia’s server instead of Apple’s have started to face problems even while upgrading to the newer firmware. So if you’ve edited your hosts file that way you wont be able to restore to a Custom or even a stock firmware, iTunes will just show you the error 3194. This is the message you’ll see.

    [box] The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3194).[/box]

    This problem is apparently caused due to a bug at Cydia’s back end and should be fixed soon. However, until that happens you can fix this problem in just a few simple steps. Now, to do this you simply have to remove the reference Cydia caching server from your hosts file and this is how you do it:

    * Download TinyUmbrella from http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com
    * Launch it.
    * Click on the “Advanced” tab.
    * Uncheck “Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit”
    * Click on “Apply Changes”
    * Reboot your PC/Mac.

    You should now be able to successfully restore or update your iPhone to iOS 4.3.3 firmware.

  • Add More Features To Your Lockscreen With Slider Enhancer

    I posted a tweak earlier which shows how to change the text in “Slide to Unlock” to something of your choosing, but now a tweak is out which lets you do that and more. With Slide Enhancer you can not only add custom text to your Slide to Unlock you can make it display battery life, IP Address, Wi-Fi Network name, Clock, Free RAM and even the Battery Percentage. The tweak is relatively simple and easy to install and really is useful to those who wish to make the most use of it.

    Step 1.

    Go to Cydia and in Search type the following without the quotation marks ( “  ” )

    com.app1enerd.sliderenhancer

    or you can just look at the screenshot below:

    You should see a single result bearing the icon of a yellow power drill, tap on this.

    Step 2.

    Like the other tweaks installation is always easy as pie, all you have to do is tap on install on the top right of the screen and confirm afterwards and your tweak will start to install AND download. Once it has been installed on your device successfully you will be told to “Restart Springboard” tap on this command to make your device do a soft reset back to your lock screen.

    Step 3.

    Unlike my last tweak this won’t work if you simply double tap on Slide to Unlock, for this you have to navigate to your settings.app and scroll down till you find Slider Enhancer.

    Choose what you want from there and voila! All the options at your disposal will be before you. As shown in the screen below.

    This tweak works on any and all devices above iOS 4 and it also supports iOS 5. Do leave a a comment mentioning whether you found this tweak to be helpful or not.

    An iPhone 3GS  with Baseband 05.13.04 or Below.

    An iPhone 4 with Baseband 01.59.00 or Below.

    ======================================

    Step One

    Download iPhone 3GS/4 custom and official IPSW. Download and extract Redsn0w. For convenience, place all of them in a folder on the desktop, like so:

    Step Two

    Open up Redsnow. If you are on Windows 7, you will have to run Redsn0w as an administrator and in Windows XP SP3 Compatibility mode. Click browse.

    Step Three

    A window will appear, point it towards the Official IPSW for your phone which we previously placed in the folder on the desktop.

    Step Four

    Once the IPSW gets verified, click the Next button. Redsn0w will then prepare the jailbreak files.  You will then be shown a menu with many options. Untick all except for “Just Enter Pwned DFU mode Right Now” and click Next.

    Step Five

    Connect the iPhone to the PC and then proceed to switch it off. Once the phone is fully turned off click Next. Remember to hold the phone in your hand before you press next  as you will have to press various buttons on the phone to make it  enter DFU mode.

    Step Six

    After pressing next, instructions to enter DFU mode will appear. To enter DFU mode, hold the power button for 3 seconds, then without letting go of the power button press the home button and power button together for 10 seconds after which let go of the power button and continue to hold the home button until your PC detects the phone. It may take several tries to get into DFU mode.

    Once the phone has entered DFU mode, the process will begin. The phone will reboot.

    When it’s completed it will show you this message. Now your device is ready to accept custom IPSWs from iTunes.

    Step Seven

    Launch TinyUmbrella and press the “Start TSS Server” button. Keep TinyUmbrella running.

    Fire up iTunes and it will instantly show you the following message.

    Press OK.

    Step Eight

    On the iPhone menu in iTunes, hold shift and press the restore button.

    Step Nine

    iTunes will now ask you to locate the IPSW file. Point it towards the Custom IPSW that you downloaded and placed in the Jailbreak folder.

    iTunes will then restore your iPhone with the custom firmware. This process will take about ten minutes and iTunes will notify you once the process is complete. The phone will then restart.

    After the reboot the phone will be Jailbroken and activated on 4.3.3 with cydia on the homescreen. If the phone fails to activate or Cydia isnt working(very unlikely) continue onto the next steps.

    Step Nine

    Open up Redsn0w again. Click browse and select the Official IPSW file (Refer to step 2 and 3). Click next. This time around, select only “Install Cydia” and leave all other options unticked.

    Step Ten

    Click Next and then connect the iPhone and turn it off. After it has fully shut down, Click Next (Refer to step 5 and 6). Follow the on-screen instructions and after you have successfully entered DFU mode, the process will begin.

    It will notify you when it’s complete. The rest of the process takes place on your phone (This usually takes around 5 minutes). If all has gone well you’ll see a running pineapple logo on your screen. Your phone will reboot after that is completed and then you’ll have and activated and jailbroken phone with the baseband left untouched. The Cydia icon will be on the springboard.

    The end result is that we will have the iPhone on 4.3.3 but the baseband will be whatever you started from(05.13.04) in this case as opposed to the 05.16.02 on the stock firmware. Now you can simply go to Cydia and install Ultrasn0w and your phone will be unlocked. And that’s it.
