Master Chief is back. And you guessed it; the fate of the universe is on his shoulders once more. Man, I wonder how this guy sleeps at night. But this time, Chief isn’t the only one in the limelight. Cortana is the one we should be focusing on.

Yep, the story is about Cortana now. Not completely, but the essence lies with her. Apparently, Cortana has reached a stage in her programming where she is ‘thinking herself to death’. She has emotional outbursts and some programming errors. At points in the campaign, Master Chief is the one who has to think about the situation. The way Master Chief and Cortana work together to achieve their objectives and help each other remain calm is quite emotional and one of the key aspects of the campaign’s story, which begins as Master Chief wakes from his cryogenics sleep which he went into at the end of Halo 3. The story is exciting and keeps you glued to your seat until you’re done with it. There are a few loose ends here and there, but why wouldn’t there be? It’s not like this is the last game in the franchise.

The story is made better by the amazing voice acting of all the characters. It feels incredibly realistic. Furthermore, the character models and designs are astounding. They’re possibly one of the best human designs I’ve seen in video games, and that’s saying a lot. It’s not only the character models that are detailed though. The entire looks gorgeous. Everything is sharp and clear, the environments are radiant and the effects are eye-opening. Master Chief’s armor is highly detailed and has visible scratches and signs of damage on it, which enhances Chief’s image as a hero who has been through a lot. Not only does it look bad-ass, but it reminds us of what Master Chief has done to deserve our respect. All this is so emotionally captivating. Halo fans will not be disappointed by this. Apart from all that, even the weapons look shinier than ever and using them is just heavenly.

Speaking of weapons, there are a lot of them and each one of them has it’s own purpose. You hardly ever run out of ammo because of the abundance of it. Never stop shooting: that’s what I would say to you, and I’m sure that’s what you would do. The enemies just keep on coming, and you just have to keep killing them. It seems repetitive, but it’s not. There are lots of various enemies in the game and there are even more ways to kill them. Perhaps you could kill them with a melee? Or use an assault rifle? Or blow them to bits with a rocket launcher or a grenade? It’s entirely up to you. And the fun never dies.

The enemies are smart and you have to be careful while playing at a higher difficulty, but that simply adds to the fun. Don’t worry, your firefights aren’t restricted to the guns and the ground. Like previous Halo games, you have vehicles, with a few new ones making an entry in this installment. Vehicle battles are fabulous and provide a better source of entertainment when you’re tired of running and shooting all the time.

The weapon effects, both visual and sound effect-wise have been completely redone and are fantastic. Oh and the soundtrack is simply phenomenal. No doubt that all those tracks will be making their way into my iPod soon enough. They bring Halo to a whole new level of Awesome. All these factors work together to bring you the best experience, and 343 Industries has simply outdone itself with these. When the Halo franchise was first handed over to 343, we were all skeptical. After all, how could a new industry create a new installment franchise that has been refined, polished and improved over the years without breaking something? Well, lets not ponder over that. The thing is, 343 has surprised us all. And what a surprise it is.

    halo 4 review 3 533x300 Halo 4 Review

Well, enough with the single player. If I don’t stop, I’ll simply continue to emphasize on how great it is. So, what about multiplayer? Is it still the fun blood fest that we’ve come to love? Yes.

Like other FPS Multiplayer modes, in Halo, you can either have objective based Multiplayer matches or Deathmatches, which still remains the most popular mode in a multiplayer game. Don’t worry, it’s still a lot of fun. The new maps are excellent and the killing other players never gets old. It’s not Call of Duty, so it’s obviously a lot more fun. There is, however, the introduction of perks in the game, just like in CoD. But there’s no need to worry as these do not interfere with the main focus of Multiplayer, which continues to entertain for hours on end. There are 10 main maps and 3 forge maps for the players to enjoy. Another welcome addition is that of Spartan Ops which has taken the place of Firefights. I personally enjoyed Firefights a lot, and am sad to see them go, but such a thing is insignificant as we now have Spartan Ops.

    halo 4 review 4 533x300 Halo 4 Review

Spartan Ops mode is basically a downloadable series of missions, broken up into a few chapters. New side missions will be released every week, free for the next ten weeks. However, these missions lack a scoring system which results in the absence of an incentive to come back and repeat a mission. Some people would have gladly taken Firefight in place of this, but we can’t all have what we want. Nonetheless, Spartan Ops is a good addition to Halo 4, albeit being slightly weak than it’s predecessor. But, overall, this was insignificant for me as Halo 4 provided a lot more fun and entertainment that I could have asked for.

For the past few weeks, I was confused over which game would be the Game of the Year of 2012, considering how this year was kind of lacking in triple A games. But now, the answer is clear. Halo 4 is the best Halo game to date. And, without a doubt, it is the best game I’ve played this year.

    Techdeville gives Halo 4 a 4.5/5.

  • Apple charges 43% over iPad mini parts value

Apple’s newest iPad mini was announced a little over a week ago. The 7.9-inch tablet has gotten great reviews for being beautiful and having a great eco system. There’s not a lot to dislike about the iPad Mini, but if there was something to nitpick, it would be the $329 price tag for the base model. But how much exactly does it cost Apple to make one unit?

parts Apple charges 43% over iPad mini parts value

The folks over at IHS iSuppli stripped apart the 16GB version of iPad Mini and found out some interesting facts. Calculating individual costs of each material and adding it up makes the price of the iPad Mini $188. Taking into consideration the $329 price tag means Apple earns a healthy 43% gross margin. Profit margin for the 32GB and 64GB version is 52 percent and 56 percent respectively. The 7.9-inch display and corresponding parts total at $80.

The 43% margin might sound a lot considering the likes of Amazon or Google just break even on their tablets. But Amazon and Google have the service part of their products where they make up for the lack of any margin on hardware. In addition to that the 43% doesn’t include the countless man hours spent and the millions spent on R&D prior to product launch.

  • Factory unlocked iPhone 5 prices leaked on Apple’s website

Apple announced the latest iPhone 5 a month ago. The reception was lukewarm despite a relatively new design and upgraded internals. As it is always the case, Apple priced the iPhone 5 at the same level the previous iPhones were at launch. $199 for 16GB version on contract and then going up depending on storage. However there are those who do not like to buy phones on contract. Those who want a factory unlocked iPhone 5.

ip Factory unlocked iPhone 5 prices leaked on Apples website

Fortunately for them the US Apple online store is starting to show signs of a factory unlocked iPhone 5. Currently it’s still showing contract based version. However if you search for ‘iphone 5 factory unlocked’ the Apple Store results pane on the right will show the factory unlocked iPhone 5. The phone itself isn’t actually available on the website, it’s likely that these results are saved in the database and ready for public visibility when the factory unlocked iPhone 5 is available.

The units are priced at $649 for the 16GB version, $749 for the 32GB model, and $849 for the 64GB iteration which is the same as the iPhone 4S at launch. It’s expected that Apple will make the factory unlocked iPhone 5 available for purchase by the end of the year after the roll out in completed in all countries.

  • iOS 6.1 to bring Movie ticket purchasing via Siri

Apple is currently working hard to get iOS 6.1 out as soon as they can. Since the beta was only recently released not a lot is known about iOS 6.1. We do know that maps will play a big part in this update. Apple fix, or try to fix whatever issues that have plagued the maps app. Now another cool new feature in iOS 6.1 has leaked. It’s the ability to buy movie tickets.

siri iOS 6.1 to bring Movie ticket purchasing via Siri

The picture above shows how it will be done. Movie tickets buying will take place through Siri. Some of the commands for that are shown above. When a user asks for a particular movie, Siri will show the showtimes and theatre information depending on your location. They can then click the buy tickets button. Ticket buying will take place via Fandango, which is one of the most popular online tickets purchasing services in USA.

ticket iOS 6.1 to bring Movie ticket purchasing via Siri

The feature will initially only be available for users in USA. It’s not compatible with all theatres. The compatible theatres will have a relative icon in front of it. Ticket purchasing is hopefully one of many new features to come in iOS 6.1.

This update is very important from Apple’s point of view and where they stand against Android. If you want, iOS 6.1 is also available for download.

  • A New Batch Of Grand Theft Auto V Screenshots Fresh From The Oven

Rockstar is back, teasing us with more screenshots and making us die over and over in anticipation. This time the screenshots reveal an old-school propeller plane, a daring guy laser-aiming at a helicopter with his ‘what looks like’ an AK47 and helicopter chasing a man, well…not really, it just looks that way and it looks funny.

Last time we shared with you first three initial images that Rockstar revealed which showed a fighter jet you can pilot, a classic car returning and the San Andreas trademark of using bicycle as a transport means.

Rockstar is still tight-lipped about the release date and on which platforms will the game debut on.

The recent images show a wonderful upstream above which an old-school propeller plane, which is commonly used to train pilots, is flying above it. The visuals of the water look extremely photo-realistic and breath-taking. Good to see that Rockstar is doing a magnificent job in the graphics department.

Grand Theft Auto V so far:

Michael Hunter is the music composer for GTA V, Ned Luke will not be playing the lead role, San Andreas is the location for GTA V and still no release date or platforms announced for the title but we are hoping that it gets released this year.

Check out the new batch of screenshots below

    Hype!

  • Samsung’s response to Jelly Bean update

Jelly Bean update was announced by Google a few days ago and showcased a lot of new features that have gotten Android users very interested. Apart from Nexus owners, everyone is wondering when their beloved handset will get the Android 4.1 update. HTC has already given their response and now it’s Samsung’s turn. The statement by Samsung was:

Samsung will soon announce which additional devices are eligible for the Jelly Bean update. As the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, Samsung leads the Android community with best-in-class devices like the Galaxy S III, and is creating new device categories with products like the Galaxy Note. Samsung has delivered the most Nexus-branded lead OS devices and we are pleased that Google will be bringing Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S customers the first experiences of Jelly Bean on a handheld device.

Certainly a lot of boasting about delivering updates to Nexus devices but we all know Samsung isn’t responsible for those anyway. The only thing we can make out of it that some of the devices will be getting the Jelly Bean update. Galaxy S III is surely one of those and Galaxy Note too probably. What else? Will Galaxy S II get the update? What about carrier variants of Galaxy S II and S III? Samsung’s Galaxy based phones alone outnumber almost the entire lineup of HTC. That’s great, but it makes updating all the more painful.

Samsung’s track record regarding updates has been the worst of all manufacturers, and not just on Android. They botched the NoDo update on their Focus, a Windows Phone device. Galaxy S II took nearly 4 months before it got the update all over the world and even now there are some carrier variants that are in queue. Galaxy S update was a fiasco. So based on history Galaxy S III owners have some long waiting to do. At the earliest you’re looking at Q4 2012 which is still 6 months away.

Those who want to go the custom way, do so. Relying on Samsung for updates requires patience and handling frustration. It’s hard to swallow, but that has been the Samsung way.

  • HTC Q2 profits take 57% plunge

HTC is one of the most recognizable smartphone brands in the world. From making handsets that run Windows Phone to great looking Android phones, the company has enjoyed great success over the past few years. However where there are peaks, there are falls. Q2 2011 was a great quarter for HTC, but Q2 2012 has been pretty rough.

From March to June, HTC generated revenues of NT$91.0 billion (~$3.04 billion), while net income after tax was NT$7.4 billion (~$247 million). Compare this to Q2 2011 where HTC ‘s net income was $586 million. That is 57.8% fall in profits. As far as sales go, compared to this time last year HTC has seen a 33% drop in smartphone sales.

htc one x tegra 3 super phone at mwc 2012 13 720x444 HTC Q2 profits take 57% plunge

It’s not all gloom and doom though. Companies see rough quarters all the time and HTC isn’t the only OEM that went through this. Just look at Nokia and Blackberry. However unlike Blackberry and Nokia, the situation for HTC isn’t self inflicted. Part of the reason for profit falls is stiff competition. Where sales for One X stall, Samsung is having a ball with the new Galaxy S III. This is partly because of Galaxy S III’s global launch. It’s available on all major carriers in the US as opposed to only three for One X. HTC’s lower end Android smartphones also suffer from poor sales with Samsung taking a major chunk of that pie too. HTC has also witnessed poor sales in Europe, which is its biggest market.

Legal issues have also hampered sales. With ITC ruling against HTC in the Apple v HTC case, handset availability was delayed significantly which had a detrimental effect on sales.

This is just one quarter though. HTC can fight back by continuing the tradition of making quality handsets. They just need to sort out their legal issues as well as proper roll out for flagship handsets.

  • LG prepping Quad-Core powered smartphone with 10MP camera

When it comes to smartphones, or more specifically Android, Samsung rules the world with HTC following. There is however another brand LG that is striving very hard to get a share of the pie. LG as a whole is a very successful company when it comes to consumer products. Their LCDs and various other products are very popular through out the world. However the smartphone arm of the company has been struggling lately. LG was the first company in the world to come out with a dual-core powered smartphone, Optimus 2x. Software and hardware issues with the phone meant it never really took off.

lg optimus 4x hd tegra 3 1 572x480 LG prepping Quad Core powered smartphone with 10MP camera

Now with their recently announced Optimus 4x LG hopes to have a change in fortune. One smartphone will not do that though, the company chairman has realised. This yet unannounced phone from LG will pack in the same quad-core CPU that powers the Optimus 4x. This new phone will swap the mediocre 8MP camera with a new 10MP shooter.

This is suppose to be the be all and end all phone for LG for 2012 which is why the phone is in development with direct input from the chairman, who is reported to be quite dissatisfied with LG’s performance in the smartphone race.

Of course specs alone don’t make a phone. LG is notorious for delayed updates and buggy software. If they hope to compete with HTC and Samsung they need to sort out those issues as well. In addition to this LG needs a ‘wow’ factor in their phones. LG is still a niche company when it comes to smartphones, and simply producing phones with the same feature set as popular phones will not be enough.

Will this unannounced phone be what LG needs for a change in fortune? I guess we’ll have to wait and find out.
