  • Easily Access Your Settings Homescreen Shortcuts Using This Neat Tweak

Are you tired of always having to navigate to finding the right setting in your settings.app? with the introduction of a neat feature in iOS 5 which lets you add homescreen shortcuts you can have your favorite shortcuts on the homescreen accompanied by a real well decorated icon. You no longer have to turn your wi-fi on / off with the extra press of a button and you can access a few of the settings.app features right now but considering this is a free tweak I would say that it is very generous.

I would like to mention that this tweak works on jailbroken and non jailbroken iOS 5 devices, the tweak will not work on iOS 4.3.3 so I had to borrow another iPod Touch on 5.0.1 for this tweak to work.

    Step 1.

Open Safari and navigate to the following site without the quotation marks

    brdrck.me/settings/

(sometimes you will get a 404 on the site, simply wait a couple of minutes or 5 – 10 minutes at max and it will be resolved.)

You will see the following screen below once the site is open.

    Step 2.

Choose the icon you wish to add to your homescreen and then tap on the bottom center icon of Safari and choose “Add to Homescreen” and it will automatically take you back to the homescreen without any further delay.

Now whatever setting you tap on will be opened straight away without having to navigate through your settings.app page.

Credits and huge props go out to Jeff Broderick who is the creator of the webpage and the magnificent icons used in this tweak, I give him a hearty salute for making my wi-fi on and off one button less (yes I am very lazy).

I would like to add that this tweak was tested on an unjailbreaked iOS 5.0.1 iPod Touch 4G and it worked perfectly. As I said earlier the tweak is so simple a child can do it and unlike other tweaks posted here Jailbreak is not a must and iOS 5 is mandatory for the use of this tweak.

Post in the comments below on how helpful you found this tweak and whether you would like to see more like it in the future.

  • Open App Switcher Directly From Your Lock Screen Using “LockScreen Multitasking”

“LockScreen Multitasking” is a new Cydia tweak which allows the user of a Jailbroken iDevice to launch App Switcher directly from their lockscreen.

The use of this tweak is really simple, once its installed just double tap your home button on your lockscreen and the App switcher will appear like it appears inside the Home screen.

NO configuration is required by this tweak and it is only available for iOS 5 users.

There are three simple steps to install this tweak:

Step 1. Go to Cydia on your Jailbroken iPhone, iPad or iPod.

Step 2. Search for “LockScreen Multitasking” under ModMyi repository.

Step 3. Install the tweak and Restart SpringBoard.

Note: If you don’t have ModMyi repository, then add source (http://apt.modmyi.com)

  • How to Fix iTunes and Appstore’s “Invalid Address” Error

Apple just recently changed the way it validates addresses on iTunes accounts, this means that if you have a US iTunes account with a fake address or one generated from any service like fakenamegenerator you will get an error that says “Invalid Address”.

The solution to this problem is fairly simple. All you have to do is replace your fake address with this address:

    1 Infinite Loop
    Cupertino
    CA 95014
    Number: 408 996 1010

This is the address of Apple headquarters by the way. Just change the address on your iTunes account and you’re good to go.

  • How To: Exit All Apps on iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad

With iOS4 Apple introduced its revolutionary new take at multitasking. The multitasking on the iPhone 4 is a pleasure to use but the problem is that over time a lot of apps become clustered up in the background. The only way to close them was to select each single app and exit it from the multitasking menu. However, as it turns out there is a MUCH easier way to close all of the back ground apps with one single click.

The following is a guide on how to exit all apps on an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch or an iPad.

    Step One

Open up Cydia from the springboard

    Step Two

Navigate to the search tab and search for Remove Background.

    Step Three

Tap on the Remove Background package and install it.

    Step Four

Remove Backgound will now appear on your springboard.

    Step Five

Now, there are two possible ways to use Remove Background to exit all apps on the iPhone.

    Activator

    1. Launch the RemoveBG app and go to the activator menu.

    2.  Select the activation method from the many available to activate RemoveBG and exit all your background apps. For this example I’m going to use the volume keys.

    SBsettings

This method is more convenient and recommended by us.

    1. Add the Repo http://repo.hackyouriphone.org to Cydia.

    2. Install the package Remove Background SBsettings.

    3. Now you can simply swipe on the status bar, and all your toggles will accessible from anywhere on the phone. To exit all apps you simply have to press the RemoveBG button and all the open apps will be exited.

Kindly “+1″ and “like” the article if this helps you out. Thanks!

  • Editorial: A Tale About Apple

This is about a Pakistani with an Apple product. A guy living in a third-world country.  This is a story about me, Ali Khan, the Founder of this fine establishment TechDeville.com, this is a tale about me and my iPod Classic 80GB and how Apple Authorized Resellers helped (or almost destroyed) me. It all starts two years ago when I get this sweet baby as a present from my beloved Uncle, I took care of it more than anything else. It was a magical two years, unlimited music, mood swing control, you name it, my iPod was there to help me out.

The tragedy began when just two months ago my iPod died on me and that too when the warranty had ended. Without any physical damage, it just wouldn’t turn on. So I did what any man in my position would do at an emergency situation and instantly Googled it. Tried all the reset/restore remedies but none worked. Now since I live in Karachi, we don’t have official Apple Stores, we have authorized resellers. So I started writing down the addresses of each one to go visit to see if it could be cured. This is a tale about my experience (or lack thereof) regarding the AUTHORIZED resellers.

    My First Visit: Bawany Technologies

Bawany Technologies are Apple’s first authorized resellers in Pakistan. That alone was enough to arouse my trust in them. Now I was very skeptical about this visit, as I didn’t know if they’d actually give me any good answers. But I still went, as helpless as I was to see my iPod display that fine Apple again. Well upon arrival to the extraordinarily immaculate store, I had a smile on my face and without hesitation asked the sales rep about my issue. His immediate response was:

“Sorry, we do not fix iPods. No one in Karachi can fix iPods, no other reseller can fix iPods.”

Well THAT was a giant blow to my innocent smile. I was left with no questions as the guy already answered any query that might develop in my dubious little head. So, sad and with my head down, I left the store. Checking the name “Bawany” off of my list.

    Website for the curious: http://www.bawanytech.com/

My advice about Bawany: Yeah, they can’t help you unless you’re under warranty or wanna buy something new. Service was below-par too. Nothing I’d go back to.

    My Second Visit: iTech

After getting the extremely negative let-down from Bawany Technologies, I went on to iTech which was second on my list. Now their website clearly states that they take old iPod and exchange them for new ones, well it doesn’t work for dead old iPods. Still I went in. Again, another extremely lavish store with MacBooks on display, enough to make any geek drool. I went on to talk to the sales rep, I won’t name any names. Now upon my sad confession over my iPod, the nice man told me they can fix any Apple Product, he said:

“We have CERTIFIED APPLE ENGINEERS. We have spare parts NO ONE IN KARACHI has. We have fixed EVERY KNOWN issue. You just have to sign this paper enabling us to fix the iPod, and you’re good to go.”

As soon as I heard those magical capitalized words above, my hands went on their own and signed the paper. Happy and content that I’d get my iPod fixed, I left the store in hopes of a brighter tomorrow. A week later, I went back to iTech to take my product, the guy told me it wasn’t fixed, it can’t be fixed by ANYONE and then he went on to say this to my face:

“However, you could sell this here FOR 500 RUPEES( 5 DOLLARS) and we’ll USE IT FOR SCRAP. It has NO VALUE left.”

Now listening to the above quoted line, I was enraged, angry, wanted to make scrap out of him, but being a good human being I quietly took my dead iPod (wrapped in paper) and walked out, while some lady bought a MacBook Pro and the guy was nothing but nice to her(shows how much money talks in this world).

iTech too has a website: www.itechpk.com

What I think about iTech: I don’t think I need to elaborate on it further or this article would be blasphemous!

The Depression Phase: Dead iPod Needs Burial

So since none of the above mentioned “AUTHORIZED RESELLERS” had a sound solution for me. I finally put my dead iPod in its box and decided to get a new one. While looking online for a better iPod Reseller one day, I stumbled upon Media Center. It was a gamble but my heart still wanted my dead iPod to be of use, so I called them up and explained my story. They told me to visit their service center the very next day. And so I went.

    THE Authorized Reseller: Media Center

So my third and last venture in my dead iPod story is Media Center. Another “AUTHORIZED RESELLER” I had huge doubts about. But I still took my dead iPod(Still wrapped in paper) to their outlet. Met with Mr. Zuhair Younus, their General Manager, he made me wait in the waiting area(which was amazingly lavish by the way) for twenty minutes. After which he came to me with my poor iPod and told me the magic words that lit up my heart:

“This iPod can be exchanged for another iPod Classic 80GB for 11,000 Rupees (105 Dollars) and will be with you within 2 weeks.”

BLISS!! SHEER BLISS!! Those words uttered were like music to my ears through a pair of Beats By Dre Studios! I quickly signed the letter and said my final goodbyes to the soldier lost in battle. I’ll receive my new iPod in a few days. Media Center did good and succeeded.

    Media Center’s Website: www.mediacenterpk.com

My thoughts about Media Center: BLISS!! SHEER BLISS!!

    Moral Of The (True) Story

Apple Resellers in Pakistan aren’t all they seem to be. We have merely four to five in the entire country which are actually authorized by Apple themselves. And out of them I found only Media Center to be the helpful and TRULY AUTHORIZED one. This customer is a happy camper. And I will without a heartbeat go back to Media Center for any or all Apple needs.

    Thank you for reading.

  • How To: Jailbreak iPhone 3GS And iPhone 4 on iOS 4.3.3 Using Redsn0w (Windows)

The following are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS or 4 on iOS4.3.3 with Redsn0w on Windows.

The complete guide after the break.

Before updating your phone to 4.3.3, you need to keep in mind that an unlock is not yet available for the baseband on 4.3.3. To unlock a phone on 4.3.3 you will either have to update using a custom firmware which doesn’t update your baseband or you will have to update to the 06.15 iPad baseband if on the 3GS. While 06.15 may render the phone unlockable, updating to it comes with its fair share of problems such as:

    1. There is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple. You’ll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way.
    2. If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won’t be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn’t update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway).
    3. Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won’t ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail). You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re an unlocker you should already be doing that).
    4. There are reports that 06.15 may disable your GPS. The iPhone Dev-Team is currently working on a fix.

    Tools You’ll Need:

iPhone 3GS 4.3.3 Official IPSW. Click Here.

iPhone 4 4.3.3 Official IPSW, Click Here.

    Redsn0w 0.9.6rc16. Click Here.

    Step One

Download the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 official IPSW (Depending on your phone). Download and extract Redsn0w. For convenience, place all of them in a folder on the desktop, like so:

    Step Two

Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes. When the phone shows up in iTunes select it from the list of devices on the left.  Now hold down Shift and press the restore button. You can also choose to update but restore is recommended; it’s always better to get a fresh start.

    Step Three

As soon as you press Shift+Restore, a window will pop up asking you to select the IPSW file to be used. Point it towards the Official 4.3.3 IPSW you placed in the Jailbreak folder on the desktop.

    Step Four

Once iTunes has successfully flashed your phone to the desired firmware, navigate to the Jailbreak folder on the desktop and launch Redsn0w.exe.

**Windows 7 users may need to run RedSn0w in Vista compatibility mode. You can do this by right clicking the executable and selecting Properties from the contextual menu

Once redsn0w opens, click the browse button.

    Step Five

A windows will pop up asking you to select the Official IPSW file for your desired firmware. Point it towards the Official 4.3.3 IPSW you placed in the Jailbreak folder on the desktop.

You will then be asked (if using a 3GS) if your device is a newer “fixed” model. If your’s is, then press the Yes button, click the No button otherwise. If you aren’t sure then simply press the Yes button.

    Step Six

Once the firmware has been successfully identified click Next. Redsn0w will then prepare the jailbreak data.

After the data has been prepared you will be shown a menu where you can select different jailbreak options. You may select specific options depending on your needs, but for now we will only select “Install Cydia”. Select that option and then hit next to continue.

    Step Seven

Connect the iPhone to the PC and then proceed to switch it off. Once the phone is fully turned off click Next. Remember to hold the phone in your hand before you press next  as you will have to press various buttons on the phone to make it  enter DFU mode.

    Step Eight

After pressing next, instructions to enter DFU mode will appear. To enter DFU mode, hold the power button for 3 seconds, then without letting go of the power button press the home button and power button together for 10 seconds after which let go of the power button and continue to hold the home button until your PC detects the phone. It may take several tries to get into DFU mode.

Once the phone has entered DFU mode, the process will begin. The phone will reboot.

When it’s completed it will show you this message. The phone will then reboot and the rest of the process will continue on your device.

When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard. Your device will now be Jailbroken on 4.3.3.

Feel free to leave any suggestions or queries in the comments below.
