  • iTunes 11 release delayed till November

If you’re an iDevice user then iTunes is most definitely part of your life. It is the software that lets your iPhone, iPad or iPod communicate with your computer. In addition to that it offers a plethora of other features. You can’t escape iTunes if you’ve invested in Apple’s ecosystem.

Back at the iPhone 5 event Apple announced the new iTunes 11 that comes with an all new design and loads of new features and functionality. This includes the redesigned interface for the player that looks a lot slicker, a new mini player, redesigned store, tighter iCloud integration and much more. The scheduled release date for iTunes 11 was October. But October has come and gone and iTunes 11 is nowhere to be seen.

According to Apple the new release date for iTunes 11 has been pushed back to November.

The new iTunes is taking longer than expected and we wanted to take a little extra time to get it right. We look forward to releasing this new version of iTunes with its dramatically simpler and cleaner interface, and seamless integration with iCloud before the end of November

While it may be a disappointment to those looking forward to get their hands on the new iTunes 11 as soon as possible, it’s still a positive sign from Apple that they’re not about to release an unfinished product. This is in wake of recent software disappointments like the unbaked Maps and the undercooked Siri. Apple simply cannot afford to let slip another bugged piece of software.

  • Apple stock prices drops 2.4% in wake of Management changes

In a recent bombshell of an announcement, Scott Forstall was asked to leave Apple by the end of the year. In addition to this the John Browett, the guy in charge of the retail outlets was also let go immediately. While John was only recently hired, Scott Forstall on the other hand was a part of Apple for nearly a decade. He was responsible for making iOS the mobile OS it is today. Asking him to suddenly leave must be because of some serious managerial concerns within Apple. And the new Apple stock prices are an indication for just that.

Apple stock price dropped about 2.4% and was trading at $589.60 this morning, which is the lowest price the stock has seen since July. Clearly the investors aren’t too optimistic about Apple’s future at this point. Forbes however reports that there might be other reasons to this. The iPhone 5 hasn’t exactly lived to the expectations analysts had and the whole Maps fiasco didn’t help. There is concern that Apple might loose its edge to companies like Microsoft, Google and Amazon.

Stock prices are quite temperamental. It wouldn’t be too surprising to see them jump back up if Apple reports impressive iPad mini sales.

  • Apple posts apology over Samsung Galaxy Tab UK case

Apple vs. Samsung cases over who copied who and which device looks like the other has lost the edge it had when it bursted on scene nearly a year ago. Whatever happens, there does not seem to be an end to what is now looking like a never ending battle that no one really cares about anymore. That being said, there are a few times when these battles take a turn for the mildly interesting. Recently we saw Apple lose an appeal in the UK over the Galaxy Tab case. The result? Apple posts apology on its website saying Samsung did not copy. And now they have.

    Here’s what it says

On 9th July 2012 the High Court of Justice of England and Wales ruled that Samsung Electronic (UK) Limited’s Galaxy Tablet Computer, namely the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Tab 8.9 and Tab 7.7 do not infringe Apple’s registered design No. 0000181607-0001. A copy of the full judgment of the High court is available on the following link www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWHC/Patents/2012/1882.html.

In the ruling, the judge made several important points comparing the designs of the Apple and Samsung products:

“The extreme simplicity of the Apple design is striking. Overall it has undecorated flat surfaces with a plate of glass on the front all the way out to a very thin rim and a blank back. There is a crisp edge around the rim and a combination of curves, both at the corners and the sides. The design looks like an object the informed user would want to pick up and hold. It is an understated, smooth and simple product. It is a cool design.”

“The informed user’s overall impression of each of the Samsung Galaxy Tablets is the following. From the front they belong to the family which includes the Apple design; but the Samsung products are very thin, almost insubstantial members of that family with unusual details on the back. They do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design. They are not as cool.”

That Judgment has effect throughout the European Union and was upheld by the Court of Appeal on 18 October 2012. A copy of the Court of Appeal’s judgment is available on the following link www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWCA/Civ/2012/1339.html. There is no injunction in respect of the registered design in force anywhere in Europe.

However, in a case tried in Germany regarding the same patent, the court found that Samsung engaged in unfair competition by copying the iPad design. A U.S. jury also found Samsung guilty of infringing on Apple’s design and utility patents, awarding over one billion U.S. dollars in damages to Apple Inc. So while the U.K. court did not find Samsung guilty of infringement, other courts have recognized that in the course of creating its Galaxy tablet, Samsung willfully copied Apple’s far more popular iPad.

If you were looking for Apple to have a heart to heart with Samsung then you’d be sorely disappointed. The above ‘apology’, if it can even be called that, is essentially a very drab looking passage from Apple. The original case was turned against Apple by the judge because the Galaxy Tab wasn’t as cool as the iPad. In this ‘apology’ Apple agrees that is indeed the case.

It’s a positive sign to see Apple complying with the judgement. They had the choice to take the appeal to the Supreme Court, but instead opted for the middle ground.

  • AT&T releases sales figures for iPhone for Q3 2012

AT&T is the biggest cellular network in USA. It was also the first network that got the iPhone under its lineup way back in 2007. After that both have had a special relation with the iPhone consistently being a top seller. Today AT&T has released their sales figures for iPhone for Q3 2012 and as expected, they make for a special reading.

AT&T activated a total of 6.1 million smartphones this quarter. From that 6.1, 4.7 million are iPhones. That’s a staggering 77% of their total activations. As a comparison Verizon had a 46% iPhone share showing again that AT&T and iPhone gel well together. AT&T also said most of these sales went to existing customers and only a handful were new connections.

As for the iPhone5, AT&T hinted at an impressive 1.3 million units sold. This is double to what Verizon managed, which was only 650,000 in this quarter. While many may call the sales figures for iPhone for Q3 2012 under par, it’s important to note that iPhone 5 has been plagued with various issues, ranging from built issues, to Maps and purple lens flare in the camera. What will be interesting to see are the Q4 sales figures for iPhone 5 since it will include the lucrative holiday season as well as the new Nokia Lumia lineup.

  • iFixit tears down the 13 inch Retina MacBook Pro

New technology is always great to see and use. The shiny gadgets companies release every month are barely enough to fulfil the appetite of your average tech geek. While new gadgets are indeed great to see, sometimes it’s all the more exciting to see them stripped apart. To see what they look like from inside. iFixit happens to have an expertise in that regard. And today they’ve stripped down the newly announced 13 inch Retina MacBook Pro.

iFixit tore apart the 15 inch variant of the same machine a few months ago and found out that the laptop was nigh on impossible to fix if needed. In fact they broke the LCD just trying to open the thing. With the 13 inch Retina MacBook Pro things are a little easier. Inside you get the same innovative battery layout and the same asymmetrical blade fans like in the 15 inch version. Fortunately now you can repair the trackpad if needed, which isn’t possible in the bigger version. The display is still impossible to take apart. Over all iFixit gave the 13 inch Retina MacBook Pro 2 out of 10 in repairibility which basically means you’d be buying a new machine if this goes bust.

Head over to their website for a detailed look on the guts of the 13 inch Retina MacBook Pro.

  • Ban on Samsung Galaxy Nexus reversed after court order in the US

Google’s Galaxy Nexus phone that was manufactured by Samsung and was famously banned in the US after a court decided it to be infringing one of Apple’s patent involving voice search has been unbanned. According to Reuters, following the appeal by Samsung in which the Korean company asked the court to revisit its decision on banning the Android device in the US, the court decided to un-ban the phone and allow it to be sold in the country. Previously Apple argued in court that because Galaxy Nexus copies a functionality of its iPhone’s Siri feature, it poses threat to iPhone’s sales and should be banned. The court agreed saying that because Galaxy Nexus has the voice search feature similar to iPhone which will cause irreparable damages and Apple would lost market share.

Now after the appeal the court noted that the voice search feature found on Galaxy Nexus is nowhere near to Apple’s Siri so it poses no threat to iPhone and thus it should be unbanned in the country.

Samsung that was at the receiving end of this ban argued in the court after the ban was imposed that not only Galaxy Nexus does not feature similar functionality as the iPhone but its sale numbers are so low that it couldn’t be a threat for Apple.

Samsung that obviously is pleased by courts new decision has responded with the following statement.

“We welcome this reversal by the Federal Circuit, finding that the District Court abused its discretion in ordering a preliminary injunction against the Galaxy Nexus. Today’s decision confirms that the role of patent law is to protect innovation and not to unreasonably stifle competition and restrict consumer choice. We will continue to take all appropriate measures to ensure the availability of our innovative products.”

The smaller 8-Pin connector is much smaller to the previous rumored 19-Pin connector, for comparison the current iOS standard connector is of a 30-Pin standard. The new connector could also allow the iPhone 5 to be connected to docks and other cables in both landscape and portrait orientation according to iLounge.

Their source also claims that the iPhone 5 will feature enhanced Bluetooth 4.0 features:

The feature would enable, say, a future iPod nano to display iMessages received by an iPhone, record voice memos that could be shared via the iPhone, and even initiate phone calls through its own headphones,

It could also conceivably let you make iPhone calls from your iPad (or possibly even recent Macs), assuming the iPhone was paired with the computer over Bluetooth.

  • ‘Adequate Volumes’ Of iPhone 5 Displays Being Produced By Sharp

According to the latest report by Reuters, Sharp is now producing “adequate volumes” of iPhone 5 displays to help Apple cope with the massive demand for the phone.

Sharp Corp is making “adequate volumes” of displays it is known to supply for Apple Inc’s new iPhone5, a company executive said, indicating that a possible bottleneck in supplies of screens may have eased.

Analysts had blamed a shortfall in supplies of display for leaving Apple with too few iPhones to meet burgeoning demand at its launch this month.

Yasuo Nakane who’s an analyst at Deutsche Securities that the main two iPhone 5 Displays producers LG and Japan Display are capable of producing 8 million units per month while Sharp will produce around 6 million.

Sharp’s increased production comes just in time for today’s launch of the iPhone 5 in 22 additional countries and more carriers in existing markets.
