  • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tide Joins The Billionaire Club

This weekend, Pirates of the Caribbean 4 became the 2nd Pirates movie and the 3rd movie of actor Johnny Depp to pass the 1 billion mark worldwide. As of right now, only 8 lucky movies have got the opportunity to pass 1 billion worldwide gross which includes 2 “Pirates” movies.

The billionaire movie club includes 8 movies which are:-

    1. Avatar
    2. Titanic
    3. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
    4. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
    5. Toy Story 3
    6. Alice in Wonderland
    7. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tide
    8. The Dark Knight

Out of these, 4 of them are Disney movies. Johnny Depp is the top actor with 3 of his movies in the billionaire club. The only movie with 2 billion worldwide gross is “Avatar”.

What is more surprising that Pirates 4 wasn’t that much successful in America as opposed to its predecessor. It made even less then Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End, both of whom made $423 million and $309 million alone in America. Pirates 4 has made $233 million in America as of yet but it is a massive success worldwide which is shown by its colossus $774 million gross from rest of the world. This accounts for about 76.6% of its worldwide gross and it was the main reason it became a massive success.

If we strip away the American gross and rank only the rest of the world gross then Pirates 4 stands 3rd behind Titanic and Avatar which is quite some achievement seeing that it was a sequel to a finished trilogy. This also shows us the star power of Johnny Depp and his cult favorite character Captain Jack Sparrow.

Jack Sparrow happy on his success

With such massive success, We will surely see Pirates 5 and 6 soon enough from Disney as they have already said that it will depend on the success of Pirates 4.

  • Pixar’s Latest Movie Is “Brave”, First Trailer Is Finally Here

The next flick from the animation house of Pixar is due out in the summers of next year. This movie seems to be quite different from all the Pixar animations so far although its details are still shrouded in mystery but a new trailer was just released by Pixar recently.

A young princess is seen riding a horse where she seems to be hunting something, we then see a huge bear attack the princess right before the trailer ends while the princess is defending herself with a bow.

The animation seems to be quite good looking as expected from Pixar but the characters seem to lack the charm of a typical Pixar movie.

  • iCloud Will Auto-Resolve Conflicts

iCloud is going to manage data well it seems. From a recent update, it has been released that the iCloud will resolve any conflicting data that might slow down or damage the user experience and make it easier for the average user. The technology is made in such a way that if two applications are conflicting, iCloud will know which one to direct users to and which one to close. It also gives the option and warning to not move ahead before resolving the conflicts.

    Macstories:

“In iCloud, I believe you will never be presented with [a sync conflict] dialog, no matter how much has changed in one of the instances while it was “offline”. The server-side iCloud, when there seemingly is a conflict, will make a decision and it will decide which one is the best (in Apple’s terms the “truth”). That is what Steve Jobs means when he says “The Truth is in the Cloud.” iTunes will decide which one is right and that’s it. iCloud will push that right one to any device that has this account that has a different version.

But, here’s the trick what happens if it’s not the right one? On the server side, it will remember all of the other ones, almost like versioning. There will be some sort of interface like “go and look at your contacts.” There will be some sort of way to say “show me previous versions and let me pick the one that is right”. You pick it and push it back up into the cloud and tell it “that’s the truth” and Apple will push it out.”

  • ‘Pirates 4′ Conquers The World, ‘Super 8′ Marketing Fails To Generate Any Buzz

This weekend, Super 8 was finally released after month’s of hype and mystery regarding the movie plot. Produced by the industry’s finest J.J Abrams and Steven Spielberg which were big enough names to guarantee the success of the movie. Despite this all, it failed to generate any notable gross on its release this weekend and got away with $35.5 million. If we compare it with similar movie Cloverfield which was also produced by J.J Abrams, Cloverfield managed to make $40.1 million and made a $80 million final tally.

X-Men First Class managed to seize $24.1 milllion to gross a total of $98 million. With its budget of $160 million, it is destined to be a failure despite this good gross unless it manages to overcome its costs. Despite having a warm positive reaction from critics and fans, its gross is still less if we compare with other X-Men movies.

The Hangover 2 which kept making records has now finally passed $200 million in just 16 days, also it is losing steam at a much faster rate then the previous Hangover, seeing its decline rate – it is doubtful if it can reach the final tally of Hangover. The Hangover was a surprise hit and had long legs, enough to gross a whooping $277 million despite a moderate start of $44 million. Meanwhile, The Hangover 2 is standing with its $215 million tally and is the top grossing movie of 2011 so far.

Pirates 4 finally managed to pass $200 million in America and ended up with a $208.4 million in 24 days. Its worldwide business was a different story though, it is on its way to becoming the top grossing movie worldwide behind Avatar and Titanic with its massive $678 million gross so far. It is currently standing at the 6th spot in all time worldwide gross but it will easily move to 4th and surpass Ice Age – Dawn of Dinosaurs and Alice in Wonderland worldwide gross for a 4th place. Its America + Foreign gross is currently $886.8 million and it is on its way to pass the At World’s End if it keeps its pace.

  • Apple-Nokia Lawsuit Finally Settled

The Nokia-Apple lawsuit that has been dragging along for months has finally been settled. Unlike most cases of these sorts, this lawsuit didn’t end in an injunction, rather a press release from Nokia, citing a license agreement and payments from Apple to Nokia.

Nokia did not cite the specifics if the agreement; however, they did say that Apple will make a one-time payment followed by on-going royalties.

[box] Nokia enters into patent license agreement with Apple

Apple payments to Nokia settle all litigation and have positive financial impact

Espoo, Finland – Nokia announced that it has signed a patent license agreement with Apple. The agreement will result in settlement of all patent litigation between the companies, including the withdrawal by Nokia and Apple of their respective complaints to the US International Trade Commission.

The financial structure of the agreement consists of a one-time payment payable by Apple and on-going royalties to be paid by Apple to Nokia for the term of the agreement. The specific terms of the contract are confidential.

“We are very pleased to have Apple join the growing number of Nokia licensees,” said Stephen Elop, president and chief executive officer of Nokia. “This settlement demonstrates Nokia’s industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market.”

During the last two decades, Nokia has invested approximately EUR 43 billion in research and development and built one of the wireless industry’s strongest and broadest IPR portfolios, with over 10,000 patent families. Nokia is a world leader in the development of handheld device and mobile communications technologies, which is also demonstrated by Nokia’s strong patent position.

This agreement is expected to have a positive financial impact on Nokia’s recently revised outlook for the second quarter 2011 of around break-even non-IFRS operating margin for Devices & Services.[/box]
